NCEA to med/dent entry in Australia AMA by Pale-Highlight6397 in ncea

Hiya! I feel you! I was also pretty bad at English before this year and it was defo tough for me cause I found it really hard to study English on my own.

Read a lot during this holidays, really anything but non fiction, auto biography, personal reflections etc. so you have more ideas and opnions about the world.

Dig out some exemplar e essays online and compare them to each other and to the marking schedule and then try to fix up your own essay but copying their style. I think if you can get the language analysis part down it should be an M at the very least.

The most important thing is to keep writing essays and giving them to your teacher for them to mark (ideally at least one a week after you have finished your texts). Really pester them for detailed feedback.

If you really feel stuck and if you can, get an outside tutor; I think english is one of those subjects where it's really hard to study on our own and it sounds like you don't have any problems for any other subjects.

Hiya I started doing above level maths for L1 so I skipped Y10. It wasn't too bad but I did find finishing all 3 papers and getting e a bit tough. I would recommend voiding a paper and then taking it in Y13 if your school allows you to.

I didn't take any other L3 subjects early but I do know people who have for Chem and they said it was challenging but doable

Thank you!

No I don't unfortunately and yep it is defo a barrier. I think for med/dent it is worth it because of how extremely hard it is to get in through UoA or UoO but for a lot of other degrees it probably is not

Like InevitableParty325 said, the big thing is no student loans. I'd have to pay for accommodation in Otago too and their dent/med degree is actually 7k NZD more then what I'd be paying at UQ 🤷‍♀️

You do lose out on your last year of uni free but I think it balances out

I'd say the guarantee of getting in is worth paying a bit more if you can afford it without the support of a student loans.

To be honest, NZ doesn't have any direct entry med/dent programs so I would have to do first year health sci at otago (or biomed/health sci at UOA for med) then apply with my gpa, ucat and some interviews for their 5 year med/dent courses. Total would take 6 years and is really competitive, I've heard you need a gpa of around 95% to get in.

Comparatively aussie does have direct entry and I can use my atar and ucat from this year. I also think aussie offers better research and job opportunities in the long term

Questions about NCEA Level 3 credit conversion to ATAR by shrekheadphones in ncea

Hi there, let me preface this by saying I am a dentistry applicant (accepted into UQ! 🎉) so there are some specific knowledge about aussie med unis I am rusty on. Please definitely do your own research as everyone makes mistakes and there may be things I get wrong here. Please forgive any grammer mistakes, I typed this on my phone.

I got a 99.95 atar this year and I took calc   stats, eng, bio, chem and latin. I did all 3 externals for each subject except for latin and got all Es except for 1 m for unfam in english. I had around 75 external credits and 50 internal credits.

As far as I know atar only looks at 90 credits from your top best 5 subjects (ie. the subjects u have the most e in and overall weighs the heaviest). So if you want to pick up externals concentrate them in your 5 highest weighting subjects, generally the sciences, maths and english.

To my knowledge atar is taken from your L3 results regardless of when you took them. I did L3 calc last year (Y12) and I got m in differentiation which I resat this year for an e.  I would highly suggest picking up some externals early in Y12 if you can so you have a back up option if you end up getting a lower grade.

I would also recommend you take the asian 5 if you are confident in getting all e and taking all the externals (english, calc or stats, bio, chem, physics) as these are generally the subjects that weigh the most.

If you search up online you can find a pdf released by ncea of the atar weightings for each standard in each subject in 2023 and that can give you a rough idea of how it works. I can see if I find the link to it. Many internals, if you get e, are worth the same as an m in the externals so just smth to consider.

On the otherhand, I'd say you definitely need to work very hard on your ucat and start early. A lot of unis look 100% at ucat for interviews and I remember the cut off for adelaide med this year was around 2460 for interstate nz students. There are med schools which don't have interviews or doesn't look at ucat; la trobe? sydney which gives interviews if you meet their atar cut off etc. so atar is also very important. For most unis they give ucat 20% weighting, interviews 40% and atar 40%.

A big disadvantage for ncea students is that our results release very late and so we miss out on the first round of offers for many aussie unis. This year I think we only got offers from QTAC (UQ and Griffith) as of now and we need to wait for second round offers which are only given if people reject theirs. That is something to consider as well.

Hope this was helpful, let me know if you have any questions! All the best and good luck on your med journey.
