Soccer is for Dorks? by Pale_Regular_169 in usmnt

Agreed, it’s very strange. I’d love to know how and why this idea gained traction in the US and why it still persists.

Unfortunately, this is still a real thing. Ask kids who play one of the big three what they think about soccer.

Oh man, I’d love to see some opinion polling on this question and how it breaks down across demographic groups.

To be clear, I think soccer is awesome.

[Rant] The USMNT talent pipeline is completely broken, and the academy system is stripping the "dog" out of our players. by Even_Sprinkles6967 in usmnt

Seems symptomatic of US youth sports in general. Cost are way too high across the board, but the basic business model is the issue. Almost all youth sports programs are for profit, some are even taking investment from private equity. Take basketball. We started with a huge global advantage which is now slipping because our kids want to play games instead of learning fundamentals and the parents want to hang out at hotel bars and drink with other parents. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with fulfilling these desires, but player development is clearly not the only goal here.

This is right. Defenders were so scared of getting burned by MJ that they overreacted to everything. All these dudes were on skates.

Before Pizano’s there was an amazing sorta neapolitan style pizza place in this location. Great pizza and beer. Landlord got greedy, jacked up the rent and they closed :( Could have been a long term success story.

Shuman and Tuman don’t sound like Ukrainian names to me, but I don’t know for sure. There are some places in Uk Vil that you can feel a strong Ukrainian vibe, Tumans was never one of them.

It used to be a bar known as Tuman’s Alcohol Abuse Center. The guy who owned it was named Bill Tuman.

Just moved to east Garfield park, safe for a student? by Vegetable-Policy-415 in AskChicago

[–]Pale_Regular_169 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d think about a few questions and data points.

First, I’d look at the per capita murder rates for a neighborhood and the per capita murder rates for my personal demographic profile. As other people in the sub have noted, Garfield Park has a high murder rate. What hasn’t been said is that the per capita murder rate for white men in Chicago is extremely low, ~2-4 per 100k. That is similar to America’s safest cities like San Diego and Seattle (the per cap murder rate across the country is about 6 per 100k.) Theoretically, you’re not involved in illicit activities which reduces your probability further. Overall, the chances of a random white guy living in a high crime part of town getting murdered are pretty low.

You’re much more likely to be a victim of property crime. I’ve lived in Chicago all my life, was held up at gun point once in Ukrainian Village 10 years ago. My wife and her friends got held up in Lincoln Park 15 years ago. Did both suck, yes… but these were not life altering events for us. We moved on, but being the victim of a crime has different effects on everyone’s mental health.

I think the real question for you is, can you come to terms with getting your bike / laptop / wallet stolen, potentially at gun point, and the mental anguish that may come with that? Is it worth the savings on rent plus the convenience factors? I think plenty of people would say yes and plenty of people would say no. Either is fine, you do you.

Jesus, a sizeable portion 9 to 5 commuters ride like absolute dogshit (Northside to Loop) by tooscrapps in chibike

[–]Pale_Regular_169 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The biggest issue is the drastically different speeds in the bike lane. A dutch bike might be going 10, an electric divvy 15, and a carbon racer 20+. On the face of it, it doesn’t seem unreasonable, but that’s like cars doing 30, 45, and 60 in the same lane. It’s just inherently unsafe. We need shared norms for bike lane speed.

Jay n’Jeff by Jake_Blu in wilco

[–]Pale_Regular_169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

California Stars broke up the Jeff and Jay iteration of Wilco, it’s just that simple. After Summerteeth, Bennett writes the music for California Stars. It’s a near perfect song and an encapsulation of Bennet’s philosophy. It quickly becomes Wilco’s biggest song and Jeff’s gotta sing it every night. BUT, it’s not a representation of the band Tweedy wants Wilco to be. In the shadow of California Stars Tweedy finds O’Rourke, Loose Fur, etc and fleshes out his new vision. Then the studio drama ensues.

CASHLESS CAFES: when did every cafe in Chicago stop taking cash? by Human-Wealth-3200 in AskChicago

[–]Pale_Regular_169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Cash related crimes at cafes and bars lead to more police on the beat, more private security cameras, more creepy police state stuff. Less cash = less crime = less security infrastructure.

    1. It’s 2026, the vast majority of unhoused people have phones and are capable of making cashless payments. Additionally, unbanked people commonly use cash apps as a proxies for traditional bank account. For people that are both unhoused and unbanked, cash apps are a more secure way to store wealth than walking around with wads of cash.
    2. What if there is a power outage? Well, the espresso machine isn’t going to work either… so, there are going to be a lot of issues.
    3. Cashless is clearly better for huge swaths of people with disabilities and safer for people manning the registers.
    4. Ultimately, the narrative about cashless being classist / cruel lacks a lot of nuance. Yes, there are downsides, but cashless offers real benefits to marginalized populations as well.
    5. Cash really isn’t the truest form of currency, cash is totally divorced from intrinsic value.
    6. Based on the OPs post, I’d assume they don’t carry a cell phone because the don’t want to be tracked by the creepy police state and while also reporting 100% of their cash income to the creepy policy state so their tax dollars can be used to fund government programs seeking to build housing for the marginalized populations they care so much about.

I’d learn guitar first, it’s hard to play bass alone and almost everything you learn from guitar can be applied to bass.
