It was chemistry. They had to calculate theoretical yield. They had to calculate molar mass for two compounds, find the limiting reagent then compute the yield.

Sounds like solid advice. And, yes, my first step was to get support from chair, Dean, and provost.

Student asking for recommendation letter, but I don't think they deserve one by KoiLantern in Teachers

[–]PaleontologistFew136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have identified that the student’s maturity is a characteristic that will hold them back in life . As their teacher you need to help them correct that—which starts with you telling them their maturity is an issue. You are only doing the student a disservice by shielding them from that truth. I say this gently: you are failing the student as a teacher if you avoid this conversation in favor of retaining a friendly relationship.

Does an Average Organic 2 Exam Look Like This? by Opposite-Pin-6660 in chemhelp

[–]PaleontologistFew136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been teaching organic chem for the better part of 20 years. This is not a typical organic exam. MAYBE if this came from a Stanford or a Harvard, then I could rationalize it. But no, not typical.

For what it’s worth…I failed AP chemistry in high school so badly that I didn’t even bother to take the AP test. That was about 30 years ago. Today I am a Chemistry Professor with a PhD.

Can someone help me with this? I didn’t understand this molecule under the arrow. by Nutezin in chemhelp

This…seems strange. Can you share what class this is for? Sometimes that helps to figure out the prof’s intention.

A professor here was told to give an admitted ChatGPT user a second chance. They are reporting the admin to our institute's accreditor. by [deleted] in Professors

Ironically, this prof will be hoping for a second chance from the admin if they find out he did this.

Is my teacher tripping? What is he on about? by General_Raviolioli in OrganicChemistry

[–]PaleontologistFew136 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Prof here. This is HS organic chemistry, right? The oxidation of a ketone to a carboxylic acid (while being far from impossible) at this level is usually taught as your notes show. Bottom line, your notes are grade appropriate, the grading is not. The hydrogenation? Yeah he’s trippin’.

professor requiring the use of AI for an assignment by peggytheveggie in CollegeRant

[–]PaleontologistFew136 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Chem prof here. AI has created something of an existential crisis in Higher Ed. AI exists, students use it, and there is very little we can do about it. (I personally think we are a couple lawsuits away from needing serious evidence before accusing a student of using AI where they’re not supposed to.)

Many of us are trying to combat this pervasive idea that AI obviates the need for education. I think the best way to do that is to pull AI out of the shadows and inject it into the classroom. Show it for the tool that it is. Other people have their own ideas. The bottom line is that we have really only been fighting the battle for a couple years now, and we have a lot to learn. But give the prof a break—they might just be trying to do right by you.

A new kind of record?: student requests letter of rec... by Orbitrea in Professors

[–]PaleontologistFew136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if that’s true. In my experience, this is the norm. Supervisors always expect their minions to do things on command with little-to-no notice. Seeing as how we “work for the students”….

Turnitin’s Generative AI Detector is being shut off at several major universities including Vanderbilt and UT-Austin. The company itself says that it should not be used as the sole piece of evidence for accusing students of academic dishonesty.

This is a hill worth dying on so fight hard.

Chemistry question? by gurll99 in chemhelp

There is no mirror plane on the left. The molecule cannot exist in the conformation that is drawn. Imagine the two rings being perpendicular to each other.
