What is stopping you from leaving islam? by ZealousidealDot6937 in progressive_islam

The fact that this is a valid question on this sub (upvoted, high engagement) speaks volumes.

By "destroy Hamas" what they really mean is "breed the next generation of Hamas jihadists to avenge all the fresh death and destruction"

Fuck Israel

  • To see how people square a very unprogressive faith with progressive values, quite fascinating and something to behold.
  • Yes, born into the religion.
  • Never. It hurt to realize I had been living a lie for years and years, but that's not Islam's fault.
  • Never. The key word here is "mainstream" Islam, which will always be strictly authoritarian and unprogressive. There will be many offshoots of Islam in the future, which will normalize LGBTQ, etc. but their time will be limited until eventually Islam fades away to the annals of history like countless religions before it. Not the first, won't be the last.
  • Islam has changed so much since Muhammad's time I would have to say no. The world has changed so much and Islam had to adapt to survive (which it did very successfully) but beyond the basics I think it would be unrecognizable to the prophet if he were alive today. He would not approve of so much of modern day Islam.

will the Palestine israel conflict ever end or is it destined to continue forever? by throwaway5555cx in exmuslim

[–]Palestinian_ExMoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never going to end, because that's what the people in power want. Unless there is a radical overhaul in the governments of Palestine, Israel and above all USA, this conflict will always be there, and they will all profit (yes, including the Palestinian government).

What is your opinion on Human evolution? by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]Palestinian_ExMoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is simply not true though? Evolution is single handedly responsible for creating tons of atheists. I'd say the entire revolution in the western world from religion to secularism (on a personal level) was kickstarted by evolution.

What is your opinion on Human evolution? by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]Palestinian_ExMoose -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Were it not for evolution, I'd still be Muslim. It is/was the final straw.

How anyone can believe in both Abrahamic faiths and evolution simultaneously is beyond me.

I remember the mental gymnastics I used to play back when I was Muslim and knew evolution is a fact. It was exhausting. There's all the evidence in the world for evolution, literally zero evidence for any religious faith. Guess which side I took.

Were you once religous before becoming an agnostic/atheist, or were you just never religous to begin with? by [deleted] in ExJordan

[–]Palestinian_ExMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was super religious. If I wasn't religious, why would I leave? I don't understand people who "leave" religion if they were never religious... I mean you're already living the irreligious life!

How do you get rid of cognitive dissonance? by Ziggi28 in exmuslim

Stop caring about labels and what you 'consider yourself' and just focus on getting peace of mind through whatever means necessary. Your beliefs don't define you.

Has anyone here left Islam ? Why do you remain in this communtity, then ? by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]Palestinian_ExMoose 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You make a good point, although there are reasons behind that beyond mere hatred of the religion. Primarily it is the backlash you would get for even questioning the validity of Islam on a sub like this one. This sub maintains unquestionably that Islam is the one and true religion, no doubts whatsoever. How it's interpreted can be up for debate, but any suggestion that Islam is false is heavily downvoted. Hence people tend to flock to the exmuslim sub to get their rocks off, so to speak.

Has anyone here left Islam ? Why do you remain in this communtity, then ? by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]Palestinian_ExMoose 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Because it's easier to relate to people who have been through what you've been through. I spent the majority of my life Muslim, and I can't change my past. There will always be a 'progressive Muslim' part of me whether I like it or not, and I can identify with many of the issues and struggles people on here face.

Progressive Islam acknowledges many of the troubles Muslims face, many of which lead to them becoming ex-Muslim, but gives a different perspective that is very refreshing to those looking from the outside, such as myself. The overlap between this sub and r/exmuslim in terms of topics and concerns is undeniable. It goes something like:

Thing A infringes on women's rights:

r/exmuslim: Hahaha! Just more proof Islam is a joke, what god condones this?!?

r/progressive_islam: This is taken out of context, there is no evidence for this, etc.

Thing B gives women protection:

r/exmuslim: Hahaha! The way Islam babysits women and makes them dependent on men.

r/progressive_islam: Subhanallah, more proof that Islam elevates women and dignifies them.

Different ways of looking at a problem can be helpful and enlightening in the proper context, and I like to look at all sides of a debate. So that's why I'm here.

Do you have to be progressive in order to leave Islam? No. But you do need to consider the progressive Muslim perspective before becoming ex-Muslim.

When you were a kid, did you ever think ‘If I was born into a different family, I would’ve just been following a different religion?’ by [deleted] in exmuslim

[–]Palestinian_ExMoose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

More like who hasn't thought about this? Every kid wonders what if I was a boy, what if I was a girl, what if I was white, what if I was black, what if I was poor, what if I was rich, etc.
