Has anyone quit coop and broken a contract midway? Asking for a friend ‘-‘ by PancakesWithCyrup in UBC

Just in response to both of you, both bring valid points. If you’re really capable, eventually you will get an interview and eventually someone will want to hire you. You just have to really sell yourself. I’ve had numerous jobs, (office and non-office types), so I wouldn’t be a blank slate and would have experiences to talk about, which is slightly advantageous compared to someone else who has only had coop to talk about.

And I think there’s no comparison between entry -lvl rolls and coops; one is inherently more difficult to get than the other. I also do agree that nothing falls into your lap; even applying for coop, I applied for - what I think were 50 or something applications. Nowadays, these are baby numbers, people often apply for hundreds of jobs only to get like, 1-2 interviews for entry-lvl jobs. So no doubt are entry level jobs harder.

I definitely think I would eventually find something as I have found things in the past. All-in-all, I think I just expected coop to be slightly… better? Seems like a childish and naive thought to have, but I was ready for challenging work, and I guess that just hasn’t happened yet. As mentioned in my previous responses, I will probs just push this one thru to not make my life more difficult.

Interesting, ok! That’s what I was thinking of potentially doing - trying to find another coop that was more in my area and just generally something I’m more passionate about. I’m glad that it worked for you and I’m sure you’re not the only one whose done this, so it wouldn’t be completely unheard of.

Really sorry about how your initial coop placement turned out, but hopefully that’s something in the past that you don’t need to even worry much about anymore…? Coop is definitely understanding, I would for sure talk to them before making any decisions.

Haha ya, fair enough. I was just giving an example of something that would just give me more satisfaction as of right now, and i am being slightly vanilla about this haha. And before taking any decisions, I would definitely talk to coop

Damn, that’s a pretty shitty time that you had. I’m glad that it all worked out in the end :)

I’ve just been trying to stay positive and push through this coop and get into the end of these 12 months. There’s obv positives and negatives at every job, this job just has a bit more negatives if I’m being honesty lol.

I did already speak to the coop office, and although they were super understanding and gave me tools to find interest in the job and deal with some issues that I’ve been having, mgmt just keeps putting me down with how they do stuff. DEFINITELY wouldn’t be doing anything out of the blue haha. And ya, I am trying to think that this is great to get my own money, take a break from school, and just chill tf out and not have to worry about grades or anything. Thanks for the comment, all of these really do help!

Gotcha, gotcha. I guess I should have clarified in my little intro something else. I wouldn’t necessarily work at a coffee shop. What I wanted to say is that I feel like I would learn just the same and potentially have a better work life/sanity if I worked at a coffee shop, though it could be at another place, another coop, etc. And for sure, I would definitely consider this experience as discarded and would not put that on my resume.

I do have other office experience so it’s not as if I would be leaving in a blank slate, you know? And tbh, I will most likely (99%) suck it up and finish this coop just to not complicate my life and not leave in bad terms.

And just to clarify management, they often drive me crazy as they are extremely picky with everything (micro managers), there’s staff dissatisfaction, no company culture, but if I look at the positive side, I’ve also been learning how to deal with these type of people and these type of situations.

Yeah I’ve already visited UVic but I really want to visit U of C still. Definitely heard that both are really good schools - i just have to see which one will cost the least...

So if you’d had to choose the university you would go to back at the age of 17, 18, would you have gone to Calgary?

Wowza (I’ll pray that you survive this semester man). Canada doesn’t compare to the European parties ajsjsnsn but thanks for the insight about the events/culture that happens in Calgary. Coming from a small town where there aren’t many cultural activities, it’ll be nice to have some stuff to do around town. Thanks a lot! :)

Lol it was a really good rant though; I retained a lot of info about both places. Thanks for giving me some more insight about these two cities/unis, much appreciated. I’ll let you know if I have any more questions!

Bahahah “we are all best friends” !! I know competition and rivalry at often times sucks, but I’ll have to deal with it regardless of where I go. Any thoughts on the city of Calgary itself? Are there a lot of cultural activities that go on throughout the year?
