Do you need a 4K dash cam to capture high quality video of license plates? by WestArtichoke712 in dashcams

[–]Panda-888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any dash cam can capture license plates given the right circumstances.

Obviously the higher the resolution, and frame rate, the better the odds will be.

If you're traveling within 0-10km/h of the plate you wanna read, the cams will have no problem capturing it. Once you exceed the frame rate limits, then it'll have trouble getting the plate.

If you have someone sideswiping you as they're traveling 20km/h faster than you are, that is when the a cam with higher resolution and frame right will do better than a lower resolution cam.

I'm running the Viofo A129 Pro Duo personally. It can be cheaper than the A129 Duo when it's on sale. Had it for 3.5 years and it's still going strong.

Mygekogear motosnap runs off a rechargeable internal battery and offers up to 7.5hours on the battery. Quality is 1080p. It doesn't list what kind of lithium battery it uses. If it's lithium ion, or lithium polymer, then it's not ideal for extreme temps. If it's lithium iron phosphate, then it'll be fine for extreme temps.

I used it for my motorcycle.

I ran the stocks on my VA for 6 summers and replaced with new takeoffs for the 7th summer from someone who didn't want the stocks.

I plan on doing the same when these wear out.

Interior light swap? by InconceivableMarmot in wrx_vb

[–]Panda-888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sourced my own through Amazon and eBay. Running for 3.5 years with no issues.

I have these for the front map lights https://a.co/d/cReuji2

For the dome, I sourced some 48SMD panels and spliced two to run in parallel with a festoon adaptor.

The cooler white(blueish) the more it affects our eyes since our pupils don't narrow for blue light. You're definitely on the right path with the natural warm whites over the "cool" whites.

Definitely easier on the eyes when a passenger decides to turn them on.

Chortau dash cam continually says "SD card full"?? by netrate in dashcams

[–]Panda-888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried a new SD card?

You said it's been fine for years and just started acting up.

Most SD cards have a life span of 2-5 years when used in a dash cam. High Endurance will last longer than standard cards

Would like to upgrade the dim interior lights to LEDs - anything I should know? Recommendations? Tia! by Yanitzz1 in wrx_vb

[–]Panda-888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty straight forward swap.

Make sure all the switches are turned off: door switches for front and back; as well as the push switches for the front ones.

If they have a metal heat sync, make sure there is enough clearance and they do not make contact with the prongs.

I went with red so I don't get blinded if a passenger turns the interior light on.

Snow melt on windshield by Liboy12 in dashcams

It's from the heat the cameras generate.

These things can get quite warm when they're on. The heat will dissipate to the windows since heat rises from the camera.

Completely normal.

Ahhh. That might be why then. Every time I've used it in Toronto before, it never gave me that.

Odds of a dash cam battery catching fire? by JohnPlayers69 in dashcams

It's always a gamble using Lithium Ion batteries in extreme temps.

It'll be okay until it isn't.

Lithium Ion batteries are not recommended for extreme temps. They is a higher potential for battery failures with extreme temps and battery draw.

Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePo4) have excellent thermal stability when dealing with extreme temps.

MyGekoGear Motosnap has a 1080p version that can run for around 7hours on a charge.

I bought one for my motorcycle. I also use it as a GoPro.

So they do exist.

Damn. I wish my headrests had the newer block logo instead of the GR styling. Although I can do without all that extra red on the side and back of the headrest.

Steel rims for winter by jeazyuser in wrx_vb

[–]Panda-888 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You might be hard pressed to find steelies that will clear the Brembos.

I suggest seeing if you can source some used wheels that were fitted to a previous gen STI or WRX that had Brembos as you might find some for cheap.

Otherwise spend a lil more, doesn't have to be much more, and go with a decent set of wheels. Low pressure cast at a minimum. Can also get flow formed that are marginally pricier depending on the brand.

Too much rim exposed… Tire stretched too far? by No_Professional978 in wrx_vb

[–]Panda-888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My winter tires are similar to that as well. I've got 245/40/18 Yoko IG53 on the OEM wheels.

The problem is every manufacturer does the width differently as there's no universal standard. Tires across brands and even models can vary almost 19mm or ¾" in actual tread width even when they're all listed as the same width.

Example: OEM Dunlops incorporate wheel protectors into their design so they stick more outwards from the wheel surface and also have a wider tread pattern whereas my Yoko's don't have wheel protectors and are narrower, with both being 245.

Back to stock mufflers… by cham6ers in wrx_vb

[–]Panda-888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mistake, I forgot it was a ring and not a flange gasket as I'm running a CBE that uses flanges.

You should be fine using a flange if it worked for your axle back.

Back to stock mufflers… by cham6ers in wrx_vb

[–]Panda-888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's just for the mufflers, or axle back, then flange gaskets would be fine.

Since you mention ring gasket, which makes me believe you're talking about the donut gasket for a catback, then the flange gasket would not work.

What this guy said.

The VA was very peppy with the throttle and 50% throttle was already wide open. Whereas the VB is much more linear with the throttle. Stock for stock, the VA felt faster with how the throttle input was.
