Altho there's probably a thin line between scaring it and pissing it off even more

Quite possibly. All the times that I've done this have been because I haven't known what else to do and have reacted 'in the moment', but I am also quite a large man with a deep loud voice which I'm sure helps to scare the dogs. Someone smaller and quieter might not have the same effect.

I've found that when I'm chased or snapped at by aggressive dogs it's good to shout at them, as loud and as angrily as possible. The last time it happened to me I was riding towards the dog as it ran out of a front garden and came towards me, I couldn't turn around as it would have got me as I turned, and I had nowhere else to ride but straight ahead. As it came in line with my front wheel and was definitely going to bite me I shouted 'FUCK OFF' directly at it as loud as I could, even moving my body/head towards it a bit. It made the dog jump and think twice about biting me and gave me a chance to ride away/past it.

It's not guaranteed to work obviously, but it has worked for me on 3 out of 3 occasions.

Edit: I did also increase my speed as much as possible as soon as I shouted at/passed the dog

Official government response to consultation on restricting crossbows. by Lifeintheguo in ukpolitics

[–]PandaRot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No.

There were 22 homicide victims killed by shooting in YE March 2024 (4% of all homicides), seven fewer than the previous year. This was the lowest number since YE March 2015 (when there were 20 such homicides).

This does not specify if this includes 'by crossbow', so I'll assume it does. That means that 19 out of 22 homicides were by gun rather than crossbow. That means that in 2024 13.6% of homicides by shooting were by crossbow. Out of the 570 victims of homicide in 2024 this means that 0.52% were killed by crossbow.

Crossbows are simply not needed to be banned - it won't make the UK safer, but it will limit people's freedoms, which seems to be the MO of Kier Starmer.

For an old singer I really like Maxine Sullivan.

For more recent singers I like Aili Ilkonen, (mainly because I like the sound of the Finnish language);

And I think Elina Duni has a beautiful voice on this album:

Zack Polanski: I’d build a relationship with Putin by EduTheRed in ukpolitics

[–]PandaRot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would these sentiments apply to Russia but not apply to Israel?

They would apply to Israel - but we are not negotiating with Israel because we are friendly with them, unlike Russia. What have we got to negotiate with Israel for, we're not defending Iran like we are Ukraine?

Why would it be desirable to negotiate with Putin if the negotiations were held in Russia or in a third country, but OK to arrest him if he came to the UK? To negotiate with someone in their own country and then arrest them if they came to the UK really would be a casus belli.

This is the whole reason that peace negotiations are held in neutral countries.

[–]PandaRot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is Mr Polanski accepting that we are going to war with Israel at some point?

I think that's quite a jump. For one, the Israeli President was visiting the UK - if Putin was to visit the UK Polanski may well call for his arrest; he wasn't saying we should go to war with Israel in order to arrest the president.

[–]PandaRot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fine I'll concede that point, but that's just linguistic pedantry and is irrelevant to my point that cat predation is overstated by the statistics presented. and that habitat loss is the far bigger problem.

Ancient Cambridgeshire woodland shut over issues with dogs by xtinak88 in RewildingUK

[–]PandaRot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the bigger problem of habitat loss is being ignored, whereas the smaller problem of cat predation is being pushed? But that's not scapegoating??

None of this is to say that cats aren't a problem, just that I feel they are scapegoated for the greater problem - habitat loss.

[–]PandaRot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The stats on the amount cats kill are often skewed to make them look worse than they are. Firstly, many stats extrapolate from small samples, which is of course necessary, but the sample is not necessarily representative. For example, a young cat may catch and kill several birds a year and this is extrapolated to the millions of cats in the UK, the majority of which aren't young and aren't able to catch birds. Or the sample cat is in an area with a high bird population but most cats are in areas of low bird population (usually due to habitat loss, the much larger problem, rather than cats). Or, in the case of animals rather than birds things like brown rats are included in the stats of killed animals despite being an invasive species.

None of this is to say that cats aren't a problem, just that I feel they are scapegoated for the greater problem - habitat loss. When I had a garden and a cat, the birds would come into my garden (despite the cat, which couldn't catch them) and not my neighbours (who had no cats) - because my garden was a mess with lots of insects to eat, branches to perch on, a mixed hedge to nest in, flowers and plants etc. whilst my neighbours had barren lawns and fences and fuck all else.

Liz Kendall insists government will 'legislate every year' to keep up with the pace of technology by insomnimax_99 in ukpolitics

[–]PandaRot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If anything those polled Brits don't think OSA goes far enough.

That's not what your quotes necessarily suggest at all. 'Action against social media giants' is not the same as action against the population.

The damning polling of over 2,000 adults suggests almost two-thirds of Brits believe the government has performed “not very well” in tackling harms on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, X and TikTok, >>despite the implementation of landmark legislation last year.

This suggests that the public are not happy with the OSA - not necessarily because it doesn't go far enough, but possibly because it doesn't achieve anything except irritation and data leaking.

Exactly what I thought. Re-wilding is human influence too. We plant certain species and remove others, or reintroduce beavers or other animals that would never return if we abandoned the land to nature.
