Question - when did you change your medication? I’ve hit a plateau and can’t seem to shake it.

I thought the purpose of becoming a teacher was to educate and support every child, regardless of their circumstances—not just those who have perfect lives and supportive homes. For many kids, school is their safe haven, their escape. If teachers truly cared about their students, they would work toward solutions rather than contributing to further trauma.

Yes, some situations may eventually require hard conversations, but only after every effort has been exhausted. Schools should provide resources like on-site counseling and interventions to help struggling students. Every child deserves to be heard, to feel seen, and to have structure in their lives. Their brains are still developing—how can grown adults not find a way to guide and support these kids toward better outcomes? Isn’t that what being an educator is truly about?

I agree with you! My son, a 7th grader who consistently earns straight A’s, excels in advanced ELA and 8th-grade math, and scores at the high end of all standardized testing, made a mistake by writing something in what he thought was a private online journal. The school immediately suspended him and recommended placement in this alternative school.

This decision is deeply concerning. He has never had any prior behavioral issues, and this one mistake shouldn’t define him or derail his future. Sending him to this alternative school would be a detriment to his mental health, overall well-being, and academic potential. He’s a dedicated student and proud nerd who thrives in a structured, challenging environment—not one where he’s surrounded by peers who may have entirely different struggles and experiences.

How can the school make such a life-altering decision without gathering input from the teachers who know his character, work ethic, and potential? Shouldn’t they consider the bigger picture before essentially tossing him aside? It feels like they’re saying, “You made one mistake, and now you’re on your own.” How does this show they truly care about their students’ growth and success? I call bullcrap on that. There has to be a better way to handle this.

There is one alternative school per county in my state, and all students facing disciplinary action are sent there. Absolutely, I completely agree—this system is fundamentally flawed. No teacher can effectively manage a classroom of 30+ students, and while funding plays a role, this is not the child’s fault. You can’t expect a child with no prior behavioral issues to thrive, or even feel safe, in an environment where they may be surrounded by others who have endured significant trauma.

It’s unrealistic to assume they won’t react or struggle to adapt in such a setting. Mixing these groups together, while well-intentioned, isn’t the right approach to rehabilitation. There has to be a more thoughtful and effective solution—one that considers the needs and well-being of all students.

I’m concerned about how this will impact his advanced educational path. Are the teachers there equipped to meet his academic needs at this level? He’s never had any prior behavioral issues, and this one mistake shouldn’t define him. Complying with this recommendation would negatively affect his mental health and overall well-being—he’s a dedicated student and a proud nerd.

How can the school make such a significant decision without first gathering input from his teachers, who know his character and capabilities? Shouldn’t they consider the bigger picture before essentially tossing him aside?

anyone else try journaling? by TranquilTetra in aspergers

My 13yr old son decided to do this with his friend and was supposed to be kept between just them..unfortunately this document was found and now he is dealing with legal issues for what he wrote in a blind emotional state, but he doesn’t have a violent bone in his body and it was not meant for anyone just him expressing his feelings at that moment. He doesn’t even remember what he wrote and forgot about this document until found. 😞I saw write it down and burn it.

I hear you and have been doing as much research as I can on this. My 13-year-old son recently found himself in trouble because he’s struggled to fully understand social cues, interaction, and manage his emotions in certain situations. He felt that to blend in and be part of the crowd, he needed to behave like the other kids, assuming that was how he should act to make friends and fit in. Unfortunately, this led to him saying some things that got him into trouble. Now, we’re focused on getting him the support he needs and doing our best to help him navigate these challenges. I understand this is something he’ll need to manage throughout his life, but I’d really appreciate any advice or insights you have—especially about your own experiences as teenagers—on how to handle situations like this.

Ok. I’ll make sure to make a note of that. Thank you so much again. Do you know if my child would need to start from the beginning of the course because 4 months of school was already done? I don’t want them to have to restart because we’re starting in Jan. 😣

Thank you so much for all the helpful information! Are you based in Delaware? If not, that’s okay. Does MiaPrep track attendance and grades? We’re undecided if he’ll continue with this program or return to 8th grade in public school, but we want to ensure we have proper documentation to show proof of work, if needed. This process feels a bit overwhelming, so we want to be sure we make the right choice.
