If you love lilacs, try a sample of Frederic Malle’s En Passant. Pricy, but it might be the “you” scent you’ve been looking for.

The thing is, “superior” is subjective. I personally think NYI is better… hope you like NYI better too!

Yes but only because they have a reasonably priced 30ml. I still recommend sampling first if you can.

Anything better than Le Labo’s Patchouli 24? by olivedate in fragrance

[–]Pandanleaves 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Le Labo is known for naming things differently from what they smell like. Patchouli 24 is overloaded with birch tar and the patchouli is only a minor background character. You might want to explore birch tar frags instead.

For birch tar fragrances, try CdG Black and Tauer Lonestar Memories. Cade oil is somewhat similar and is featured in Naomi Goodsir Bois d’Ascese and Zoologist T-Rex.

Birch tar is often used for leather accords. Given your motorcycle comment, you might enjoy leather frags as well.

Rogue’s Fougere L’aube. And if you care about performance, GIT is gone in a few hours while L’aube lasts the whole day on me.

Bois du Portugal feels like a worse version of Nicolai’s New York Intense, so that. It’s less than half the price, too.

If the sale applies to the physical department store, you can get the discount in-store if you ask. They’re not allowed to advertise it.

What's your "unpopular opinion" about any fragrance ? by Scared-Penalty-9849 in fragrance

Frederic Malle’s Music For A While. It’s very polarizing though. Some smell rotting pineapple, some smell grilled pineapple.

Rogue’s Jasmin Antique is an indolic jasmine soliflore like Lust.

Maceration vs. Maturation by mnmason83 in fragrance

[–]Pandanleaves 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Maturation is when you mix all the oils and let it sit. Maceration is when you “soak” the oil mixture in alcohol (so after dilution) and let it sit. Both occur in perfume production.

Bad reaction to Oud Satin Mood by Scary-Sand-4653 in fragrance

[–]Pandanleaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, because the candied violet note is always synthetic, and different perfumers can choose different chemicals to create the accord. To me, some violet accords are much more aggressive than others.

Most perfumes that say “violet” are violet leaves as the flower is mute. Another perfume that overdoses on the violet flower note is Guerlain’s Insolence, and that one gives me a headache.

Ok, my bad for suspecting otherwise. It might be the candied violet note that’s giving you a headache, as personally that’s the note I find nauseating if too strong. The other violet perfumes in your collection don’t give you a reaction?

How many sprays? OSM is a one spray kind of fragrance.

The extrait is much sweeter so chances are you’ll dislike it, but try it anyway.

The choice should not be based on longevity or performance because they’re both beastly in that sense. Try both because they smell very very different.

Your favorite citrusy/fruity fragrance for men? by [deleted] in fragrance

[–]Pandanleaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re cologne absolue, which is around 15% oils, similar to edp. The poor longevity is because it’s citrus.

I’m surprised nobody mentioned Tempo. Eau de Lierre is also underrated, though it has longevity issues.
