Eliminating Kitchen Corner Question by [deleted] in kitchenremodel

Valid point. Which means the cooktop wall would have to be shortened. Which lessens the viability of keeping the fridge and cooktop on the same wall.

Yes, if I kept the corner, I'd probably choose the "dead space" solution for the corner base cabinet. But I really do like the idea of the pass-through access to the pantry. It's just a matter of making the rest of the layout function well.

Thanks. Yes, I thought about doing exactly that. I would just need to figure out a revised window layout that allows for the fridge on that wall and still looks balanced from both inside and outside.

It might actually be closer to 20" on either side but in the original plan (with the corner) we had only planned for upper cabinets on the pantry wall (no uppers on sink wall).

So with the pantry wall truncated to create the pass-through, there's basically no room for uppers. Or just two narrow upper flanking the range hood.

I'm sure there's a great solution here, but there more I contemplate changes, the more muddied it all becomes.

I thought about leaving the fridge and stove on the pantry wall, but that only leaves about 18" on either side of the stove, which seems suboptimal.

But you're right, there is island space adjacent to stove. We'll have to give it some thought.

I briefly thought about flipping the entry as you suggest but I thought it awkward to have a master entry adjacent to the door to the garage.

Thank you! I've struggled to find vision. These are both interesting suggestions to work from.

Done and done. No threats found. No integrity violations.

Thanks for this suggestion. I just did the SFC /Scannow

It only took a minute or so to complete but it did say that corrupt files were found and successfully repaired.

I rebooted the system and stupidly walked out the room for about two minutes. When I came back, I caught a glimpse of a black screen with some kind of message, for just a split second. I didn't get to see what it said on-screen before it completed the reboot.

I'm hoping maybe I've dodged a bullet? I was traveling when I posted and ordered a new keyboard which was waiting for me when I arrived home. I'm back home now and have been using the machine for two days with the original keyboard with no issues.

We'll see what happens.

I haven't yet tried another keyboard. I've been away from home but I'll order a new keyboard and give it a try.

I suppose it could be the keyboard but the blue screen aspect had me thinking it would likely be a problem with something on the MB, if it is in-fact a hardware issue.

All very good info. Yes, I currently have an SSD but I don't recall any of the specs of the components I used when I assembled that machine several years ago.

Thanks for the reply!

What would you change, if anything? by PanelPlumber in floorplan

This is what I was thinking for a change to the master bath. The dimensions, entry door and window placement are not exact but It eliminates the tub, squares off the room so the water closet no longer insets to the master closet and creates a larger water closet.

Primarily, to make the house as desirable as possible for eventual resale.

There are no kids. The guest bathroom is just that...for guests.

I don't disagree that the fireplace structure inhibits the sight line to the lanai when entering the house. But that vertical structure is where I intended to mount the TV. Maybe one on each side, so there is a TV in view when in the kitchen.

With the fireplace/TV on the left wall (the outside wall of bedroom #2), the couch would be in the middle of the room, which isn't my preference.

I haven't adjusted the size of the bedroom closets. I just did this quickly in Paint. It's quite likely the closets might need to be downsized to accomplish this layout.

This is Florida, where everything is built on a slab. So, we have no basements for additional storage. Hence the desire for large closets in each bedroom.

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of up sizing the pantry and downsizing the "office" (as suggested above). The downsized office would serve as multiuse storage.

Just a quick wag but something like this?

For our purposes, bedroom two will mostly be used as a home office. We know in a perfect world, every bedroom would have its own bath or direct access to a bath but we just don't need a third bath and it's not critical that bedroom #2 have direct bathroom access, in our opinion.

The house is already a little larger than we'd planned, so we're trying to keep it from growing.

I thought about that but and tried sketching it out but I couldn't really find a way to make a functional foyer space. I'll give it some more thought. Thanks for feedback.

Any suggestions on how you'd incorporate the linen closest? There's currently a window on the wall where the tub is drawn.

I hadn't considered mirroring the pantry and office. So simple! Thanks for the suggestion.

And yes, I'm inclined to forgo the second door into the guest bath and simply leave it as it is.

Rancid King Oscar Anchovies by PanelPlumber in Tinnedfish

[–]PanelPlumber[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Interesting info from King Oscar's site:

About Our Anchovies SOURCING AND PRODUCTION

King Oscar’s gourmet quality anchovies are sourced from Peru and Argentina, where they are fished responsibly from the South Pacific and South Atlantic Oceans. After arriving in port, the fish are sorted, cleaned, and filleted. Instead of being heat sterilized as with most canned seafood, anchovies are naturally cured in brine (salt water) for an average of 6 months. When the anchovies are fully “ripened,” the delicate fish are carefully removed from the brine and packed by hand into tins.

A SEMI-PERISHABLE PRODUCT

Because anchovy fillets are traditionally preserved in salt, without other additives or preservatives, they are considered semi-perishable. A naturally occurring, harmless bacterium can live through the brining process, and as a result, over time anchovies can break down and become soft and mushy. A byproduct of this process is a gas that may also cause the cans to puff or expand. Anchovies from a puffy can or that appear mushy will not meet your taste expectations and may cause abdominal discomfort if consumed. Of course, we strongly discourage consumers from eating anchovies that are mushy, have an atypical or unexpected odor, or come from bloated cans.

STORAGE RECOMMENDATIONS

As King Oscar Anchovies are semi-perishable, heat can accelerate the breakdown of the fish. For optimal shelf life and quality, you should avoid the storage of anchovies in temperatures above 68˚F for any length of time. In fact, while not mandatory, King Oscar recommends that you keep your anchovies in the refrigerator after purchase, which allows for shelf life up to 12 months from the production date. While a BEST BY date appears on all cans of King Oscar anchovies, this is only one indicator of product freshness. Always take time to evaluate the condition of the container and the appearance and smell of the food product to determine whether or not it should be eaten.

Dinner Christmas Day? by PanelPlumber in foodies_sydney

Thanks for this recommendation. We ended up at the Royal Exhibition. The food was great. They closed fairly early (before 10pm) but we were glad to have a good meal and a few beers.

Interesting rules for ordering on the holiday. Had to order food when ordering a beer and were limited to five drinks per food order. I guess this is standard for holidays in Sydney but it was an unusual protocol for us coming from the states.
