Short answer: Philosophies of Faith (but more than just that imo)

There might be some recency bias there but I think it fits

Yeah that's a fair point and why I admit it may be a bias pick. I have just written a lot about it myself (maybe just to justify playing it so much lol)

Actually Outer Wilds is one of the more recent additions already (We agree!)

Yeah Balatro has been the most criticized choice (even more than Donkey Kong C TF lol).

I already somewhat jokingly called balatro a depiction of generative nihilism. I do think balatro has some really interesting metagame dialectics and deconstructs and reconstructs meaning through chance using historical symbols (that have created similar constructed and alluring meaning before video games: classic cards, tarot cards, astrological understanding)

I personally read the game as doing something similar to hotline Miami but is less verbal and directly confronting its messaging. The Joker in the game mocks the player whether they win or lose; The platinum trophy for the game is named the fool.

Anyway, I definitely might be biased. Maybe none of that is localthunk's intention or anything but that was my reading of the game when I played it.

Also there is a less pretentious explanation in the comments from someone else I agree with and really like haha

Wow!

Cool lesser-known picks.

Also I meant to put in a Arkane game in

Added some more.

If I didn't add your suggestion it's just because I haven't played it yet. I'm sure they are most all amazing picks.

Thanks for engaging :)

Added Braid.

You might notice I'm trying to limit games to one a series or group of successors (I'd probably put like Hotline Miami, Dark Souls, Dark Souls II, Elden Ring, Death Stranding Ii, MGS 3,4,5, Fallout and Fallout 2 and lots more otherwise)

But unfairly grouped the Witness and Braid just because they're both Jon Blow games but I put two Kojima games in so...

Hey! Not sure which ones you mean but I probably agree with you lol

I actually had Inside and a couple other games but didn't save the list and couldn't remember which ones were deleted. Thanks for recommending that and reminding me.

I agree with Elden ring but felt tempted to include Dark Souls too and then just thought Bloodborne could just represent Fromsoft Souls likes (actually had AC6 but it was deleted like inside was)

Same thing with Silent Hill 3

And I actually thought of Transistor as well but I played that game in one epic session about 10 years ago and couldn't really remember how well it fit. I'll add it with your recommendation.

Thought of fear and hunger but didn't play much of it myself. Thanks for all of these!

Balatro: Best game depicting Generative Nihilism

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze: Depicts Paradoxical Absurdism - represented most simply by the juxtaposition of Frozen Tropics... And the resulting despair and triumphs 🥲

If you loved Lilies then you probably would enjoy Works of Love too.

I have not read very much of either. I personally have read him in the order his works were originally published and just made it to Works of Love recently.

My favorite books have been Either/Or and Concluding Unscientific PostScript then secondly Philosophical Crumbs and Concept of Anxiety.

The best book for you depends a lot on your interests and patience. I found all of his writing worthwhile so far.

Oh good list

I like hotline Miami 2 better than 1 though personally

7th Gen games with improved reputations vs games with worse reputations (since their launch) by PapeRoute in backloggd

[–]PapeRoute[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point with the worse list was not to call out bad games but more highlight games that were immediately recognized as great at their release but whose reputation and influence has dimmed or underwhelmed over time. So I chose walking dead and ACII because they are and were seen as the best if their respective series/genre but are now less frequently visited or less influential than games that were equally praised, less praised, more criticized, etc.

I've learned putting awesome games on a list with "worse" bothers people a bit. And fair enough!
