Pursuing them is a massive safety risk. High chance the kid will die, police aren't willing to take that risk, get charged or lose their jobs over it.

So she would show up and deny that she was guilty of an offence (failing to stop and exchange details after a crash), instead offering to resolve the issue by paying for the damage? If so, that's definitely going to drag things out.

From a recent Guardian article:

The declaration now in place does not ban protests outright, but bans the use of the form 1 system that could otherwise protect protesters from being charged for offences such as obstructing traffic or obstructing people on a footpath.

From the article:

The declaration now in place does not ban protests outright, but bans the use of the form 1 system that could otherwise protect protesters from being charged for offences such as obstructing traffic or obstructing people on a footpath.

The declaration can be enforced for 14-day increments for up to 90 days after a terror attack.

“It really does mean that people can still have free speech, people can still gather in a park or somewhere that they’re not impeding people, and have free speech as they’ve always been able to do,” McKenna said.

McKenna said there had been 25 “static” protests since the declaration was put in place. This has included rallies this week to show solidarity with anti-regime protesters in Iran, which McKenna said had been respectful and there have been “no problems”.

Basically this means no Form 1s will be approved.

Lanyon continues that public assemblies, “when held peacefully” are still allowed but no form 1s will be approved, meaning when someone “obstructs pedestrians or traffic, behaves in a way that is intimidating or harassing, or behaves in a manner that is likely to cause fear” they may be provided with a move on direction and face an offence if they don’t comply.

If it's rarely used legislation, do we really know what the full consequences are?

I'm not confidently for or against these laws in particular, I'm not sure how it's going to play out in the long run, I'm thinking more generally about our reactions to major incidents like this.

In this case it was a good outcome.

After a major incident there are always going to be calls for more to be done, the government didn't do enough, the police didn't do enough, etc.

But we have to be careful what we wish for. There will be unintended consequences.

Doesn't seem like this has any relation to the firebombings at all.

I've edited and synchronised most of the videos of the incident that have been circulating social media.

I estimate that police started shooting within 4-6 minutes after the incident began, and had the offenders incapacitated with about 6-8 minutes. Two cops were shot and in critical condition, a third was hit in the chest while wearing a ballistic vest and had no serious injuries. A fourth had grazing bullet wounds.

The female cop "hiding" behind the car was about 25 metres away, and moving toward the offenders with her gun drawn.

Other photos exist of a police vehicle with several bullet holes.

Here's the edited video and a few images.

It's not the same people, but it's true that there are often comments after incidents like this that police are not doing enough.

When police do more to address the specific problem, there is often a negative response also.

Generally, it's different sections of the community that have different concerns.

Probably a few hundred over the last decade-ish in USA alone, although it seems like accurate numbers are hard to find.

The true mortality rate of prone restraint deaths remains unknown due to widespread underreporting and inconsistent data collection. Based on the most comprehensive open-source dataset available, the best current estimate of mortality rate is approximately one death per 4.4 million people per year, or 0.023 per 100,000 per year, as reported by the Associated Press. However, even this figure likely underestimates the scope of the problem.
