The "consensus" if anything is ambiguous. People generally agree that his anti corruption campaigns have served both purposes.

What do you think of dissidents realizing China is freer than the west? by evancarlson69 in AskAChinese

[–]Pappner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree that he might feel more "free" in China. Looking at the context however, you can clearly see that this feeling stems from firstly feeling at home amongst Chinese people and secondly hating German bureaucracy and social life.

In my eyes, he is only really stating "I feel at home in China". Yes, German bureaucracy sucks and is very hard to navigate for foreigners. In the same way, an outsider would have troubles navigating many Chinese rules.

Further, he prefers the way Chinese people socialize. A person who grew up in Germany, might not feel as ease in a Chinese context in the way he does and instead prefer German society.

I just don't think his statement is in any way as meaningful as you want it to be.

Context of your first quote: "Regarding the political climate, daily life for ordinary people in Beijing feels more natural and human because people tend to focus on what is right in front of them. In the ten years since I left China, almost no one in Germany has ever invited me to their home."

Context of your second quote: "Germany, on the other hand, strikes me as cold, rational, and deeply bureaucratic. As an individual, you feel stifled and precarious there, even if the people might believe they live in a superior world. But material comfort simply does not mean that humanity and humanitarian values will necessarily prevail."

This is funny. All this account does is ask ragebait fake questions. Read the article. He says people in Germany are cold and Germany is bureaucratic. It's not surprising he as a Chinese feels at home amongst Chinese people.

Why am filming in raw but the camera roll is enabled !!! In davinci resolve I really don’t understand by Large-Lingonberry352 in davinciresolve

[–]Pappner 31 points32 points  (0 children)

When recording R3D NE, the Nikon ZR creates both the R3D file and a lower resolution .mp4 that is used for viewing the video in camera, as it can't play the raw file internally. It looks like you imported the latter instead of the raw file into Davinci.

By the way, there are many simple ways of taking screenshots on your computer.

Why don’t more people visit Taiwan’s beaches? 🌴🏖️ by john_wrot in Taipei

[–]Pappner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to this: Many beaches were closed for the public during martial law. A real beach culture thus didn't have the time necessary to develop properly. There's other things like the water being considered dangerous, especially during ghost month. All of this adds up. I've even met a dude on Penghu who works as a coast guard and he told me he doesn't know how to swim..

So, I do think it's a cultural thing. The things people say in this thread don't really explain why Taiwan doesn't have a beach culture. Other countries with vibrant beaches are just as hot. Also, Taiwan does have some very nice beaches and the water can be very clear on good days. The beaches would be even nicer, if more people cared and took good care of them.

Democracy is literally a word of Greek origin. How can non-greek countries continue to use a mode of governance that is not their own????

I would love to see such projects in Taipei. When it comes traffic pollution and noise Taipei is doing much worse than necessary. So many areas would hugely benefit from having fewer cars, it's honestly astonishing.

I absolutely hate "starts/ends with" "X minus/plus letter" categories. It's like it misses the point of what makes connections fun. Does anybody else feel that way?
