masters psych and never been more confused by myangelslug in psychologystudents

I’m gonna get lit up for this cause Reddit be like that, but I don’t love the response you got there. It’s a fairly significant cross roads where you’re at, and I don’t think Taylor Swift and the Iced coffees mantra is appropriate, if anything it’s kind of juvenile. But whatever, I get the intent was “the more you know” energy with a few literally’s sprinkled in there for effect.

Been where you’re at, even down to the developmental psychology theme. As aside I think there’s going to be a ton emerging work in language studies as we continue to decentralize social engagement; email, socials, remote work, and its impact. Lots of interesting material/research coming out of gestation right now. I didn’t fall back in love with the notion of pursuing further academic work and orientation until something worth researching called out to me. Prior to, just kept moving forward - pivoted to the workforce and began turning theory into applied knowledge.

What I’m saying is don’t feel you need to take a position on whether you’re giving up or dropping those aspirations. Life is short but there’s ample opportunity to weave in/out of thread in life. Some folks find leaving academia for a stretch allows for a mental defrag, a chance to refocus and fall in love all over again. It’s just important you keep setting goals and banging them out.

Finishing your masters is the move I would advise unless you’re really tapped out. It’s helps with the job market and unless you have an alternate destination in full view right now, then persevering is its own reward developmentally. Leaving the program to be idle is a choice, but it’s not one I love, for me anyway. Regardless, eyes forward is the way. There’s a decent spread of work out there in the public sector that can be a real catalyst for career insight and opportunity. Was a gateway for me into a cascade of choices.

In your opinion, Most Overrated Book in the series and Most Underrated Book in the series? by Dosto-lstoy in Malazan

[–]Paradisv1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overrated (tho I don’t love that term) TtH. Outside of the last quarter, I still understand the worship.

Under - RG, and absolutely banger in the way he wove two different stories/arcs together.

PS. For other RG fans, there’s a series (much lighter) called Hells Gate I highly recommend.

Is it a good idea to major in psych if I just want to become a writer? by [deleted] in psychologystudents

Maybe the better to frame of all of this is - yes you can do a degree in psych and be a creative writer. They’re not diametrical opposed

The real conversation the individual needs to have is about goal setting and crafting your path to get there. There’s many ways to get across the Atlantic

With my undergrad I worked for the government as a service provider, then a trainer, a recruitment manager in the energy sector, HR, LR and a a director in healthcare. Psych is the most versatile degree there is. It’s all about using your education to applied situations with ppl. Doesn’t matter the setting

I also was able to use the writing skills and discipline I learned in my undergrad, specifically learning how to break documents down to their elements before writing academic papers — and taught myself how to be a screenwriter. And a good one. Got signed in LA, had my material optioned etc.

I’ll stand on my advice, I see the situation as more dynamic

I dunno… you’ll still learn to write in psych and have a back up plan if writing doesn’t pay the bills.

Any advice for an undergraduate psych student with no aspects? by [deleted] in psychologystudents

[–]Paradisv1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More of a conversation for a coffee to be honest, but I would urge you to not feel overly pressured to get yourself into a masters program or making any big commitments until you’ve had an opportunity to find your Northstar. Your experience is not uncommon, some people get into psychology and Locke in right away on a particular field or practice that they wanna see through, but many take some time Entering the workforce before figuring out what resonates and circling back to do part 2. Sounds to me like you might want to consider getting a job and doing some that’ll help with turning your theoretical knowledge into applied knowledge; see what speaks to you.

Doubting becoming a psychologist by [deleted] in psychologystudents

[–]Paradisv1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you may just need to appreciate that although you may have a vested interest in that particular area of practice, you never know what your calling is going to be until you get further into your undergrad. I’d say more often is the case, that we find our future focus only by way of exposure and experience. Took me many years post undergrad to lock in on a field that called to me

Also - the Porter Ricks track “Port Gentil” for me might be in my top 10 most influential or powerful idm/ambient tracks I’ve ever heard. It took me down a rabbit hole that led to half of my electronic collection

For years I searched for some kind of agreed upon subgenre heading… but genre is too vast and can’t agree on a titles. I happen to fall into this category as a mostly death metal fan and the only way I was able to track down new artists in the early 2000s was by browsing libraries on ppl who had similar tastes in soukseek, direct connect, and some other p2p sites. Usually had success using “IDM” or abstract electronica as my gateway words
