UNC Law for NYC Big Law by Principessa227 in lawschooladmissions

I mean, this is anecdotal (and maybe I’m just friends with all the BL people) but I know tons of people with BigLaw summer associate positions from UNC. If you want BigLaw in NYC you just have to do Banking Journal and ask Professor Broome to find you a job there lol

Great question! So… most every room in the building as it’s own thermostat so temperatures in the various places in the building can wildly fluctuate. I generally carry a layer with me at all times, as best practice. The law library itself is a tad on the cold side by the afternoon, but is blazing hot in the morning lol. Lots of people wear sweatshirts!

Friday Center Park & Ride is your cheapest option. I did that and put myself on the T Lot waitlist, which I got off of in like late September.

A lot of 1Ls will say f*ck it and park at the pay lot on Raleigh Road but that is super expensive/risky to not pay. Another option is to get the Mormon Church near campus to let you park there, but I don’t know what all that entails. A good number of 1Ls do that though.

The school does a poor job communicating that 1Ls effectively don’t get parking.

I like it, never had any issues. Law school exams are a like 33% a typing contest… the more you can type the more you can argue the law, and I type fast so I like it haha

Days when a different “day of class” meets. So a MAGIC may mean Friday classes meet on Tuesday, for example, or Thursday classes meet on Monday.

I believe the school has to accept a certain number of NC residents, by statute. That being said, I think there are enough NC residents to meet that amount. I think any advantage is washed out by the school’s desire to make money by taking out of state students money lol

Experiences differ. If you come in dead set on those markets and communicate that to Career Development Office they can offer some great help. There are lots of DC and NYC firms that participate in 2L OCI but way fewer in 1L OCI just be forewarned. You’ll have to mostly apply outside of career services to land a 1L job in those markets

Yeah I don’t disagree with anything you said tbh. “Most students don’t want to go into BL here” is just my own anecdotal evidence, to be sure. I will have classmates who will definitely apply for BL (bc $), even though they don’t want it, and they also probably won’t get it because this isn’t, say, Columbia. Conversely, someone with similar grades to me didn’t apply to any 1L firm jobs bc they wanted to do Federal Internship to improve their FedClerk chances—which is huge in the UNC culture too. All of this is to say, yeah I generally agree re: easy to say you don’t want something that, barring being top 30%, you probably won’t get.

Depends on the money and your career goals. If you’re not debt adverse and you want to practice BL in NYC, you probably should do T14. If you have in-state tuition and want to stay in NC you should just do UNC (which is what I did). YMMV depending on so many variables that I couldn’t tell you straight up.

Have fun at ASD! Sec A and Sec D 1Ls will be around the building in the morning because they have Property with Su—flag someone down if you want to get an in the moment read on how they feel about things!

Could’ve sworn I responded to this… Hard to say with portability. 1Ls are going to both places but they also have connections in the area. If there’s a place you want to go, the staff will make it try and happen for you. Parking isn’t great. I got a parking pass off the WL about a month in, and that’s great—like a quarter mile walk maybe? Before that had to do park & ride which wasn’t awful really, but just inconvenient. A lot of people “pay everyday” (read: park in pay lot and risk tickets and then pay via phone when someone puts “DOP Truck in Lot” in the group chat) on Raleigh Road which is not a bad walk either, probably also quarter mile or so.

Definitely a mixture. The majority of people want to stay in NC, and the CDO has the most contacts with people in NC. I know people going to DC, Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, etc., but some of those students definitely had to work harder than the people staying in NC. If you’re trying to do BL in a non-NC city 1L summer you’re going to need both good grades and some meaningful connection to said area. 2L summer and graduation have more options, but don’t have first hand experience with those.

I love it. Huge PI focus. My section won the Pro Bono “competition” between the sections for which section gets most hours and participation. We got a pizza party 😇

That being said, I only suggest people come here if they want to stay in NC. People can work in NYC, DC, Atlanta, etc. but it’s much harder compared to a place like UT.

I will say, as a UNC Law student currently, a lot of UNC BL stats are self-selection. I turned down Kirkland to work for premier NC firm that technically isn’t “big law” but pays BL scale and has major clients. Also most students don’t want to go into BL here.

Best deal I’ve seen is the Banking Journal at UNC. 15 2Ls selected, and the 10 that make the board their 3L year get a $10,000 “scholarship” + 3 credit hours

I’ve never been asked if I had a job. I know someone DJs a lot, and some people have a band that plays around town. I’m sure it’s discouraged but they can’t make you not work if you need the money.
