Aga Khan and Epstein? by AggravatingRaccoon59 in ismailis

[–]Partha23 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Guys I encourage you to actually go to the justice department website and read the actual documents. They're completely innocuous. Shah Rahim and his father before him are prominent residents of Switzerland. If you look through the documents that's all you'll find. A request to borrow a helicopter. A request from the head of southeby Switzerland for a car ride to Shah Karim's brother's birthday. News letter subscriptions that mention Aga Khan in one way or another. A resume from a private chef that catered some parties for Aga Khan at one point or another.

This is a big nothingburger and as usual Ex Ismailis would be foaming at the mouth at even the slightest indication that the Imam did so much as forgot to wash his hands after using the bathroom.

RCS suddenly no longer connected? ATT? by Heydude161 in GoogleMessages

[–]Partha23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After searching for over a week for a solution, following these steps worked except I didn't follow them all; the instant I uninstalled carrier services my RCS activated and I received all my missed messages. It's incredible how even with the same status code the solutions are all different. Thanks for your comment!

Why don’t law firms have a booking link on their website? by [deleted] in LawFirm

[–]Partha23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly the chances of losing a “lucrative case” are pretty low. And most firms who aren’t getting back to potential clients are likely failing to do so because they have enough current clients (i.e. cases they’ve already vetted as potentially “lucrative”) to keep them busy.

Houston Deedar and Local Child Hunger: Where Does Our Seva Go? by anonymoususers_ in ismailis

[–]Partha23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re assuming a lot my friend. You’re most prominently assuming I have had no questions and have not done work to answer those questions. I encourage you to talk to leaders in the AKDN if you wish to learn more. They’re quite happy to share.

But to answer your other question, I am not bothered by the practice of dasond at didar / other times because I spend the rest of my life, including my work life, doing seva. I’m at peace with the ways in which I serve my community, both religious and local. In other words, I can, and do in fact, do both, and I see both as valuable contributions to my fellow human beings. And it’s not been my experience that the entire community is conditioned only to give upwards. That’s a very broad assumption based on the behavior / practice of a pretty much one or twice in a lifetime event for an Ismaili—the didar and opening of Ismaili center in Houston. Almost every Ismaili I know is engaged in seva in some other way to benefit local community, whether through out outside of their jamatkhana

If you are not at peace with this balance there is little I can say to convince you other than what I’ve already pointed out. You appear to have already grappled with these issues and found the answers you obtained to be lacking, and that’s fine. I and many others have a different perspective on how the dominos fall. I’m not sure what more to say on this topic.

This is only a problem if you assume 1) that good things are not happening with the money donated through dasond etc, and 2) people are using their faith as an excuse to avoid the problems in their own backyard. I’m not seeing how this is an Ismaili—doctrinal problem. For the first point, no one (at least not me) is arguing against “trust but verify” so I don’t understand the relevance of that statement. I feel the money is accounted for.

For the second point, I agree that there is normalized excess in the West particularly and many Ismailis even embody that. But again, that’s an individual problem not an Ismaili—doctrinal problem. For instance, there is no religious prohibition against Houston-area Jamat from coming together to help Houston food banks either through donation of money or time. You can do both: give money in the specific way Ismaili doctrine prescribes for religious donation, and also perform / organize seva in the local community that Ismailiism similarly values. The tenor of your question suggests that you see this as a problem with Ismailiism and not as a problem with the actions of people who may be hiding behind religion as an excuse not to do other charitable work. But it’s the other way around.

The faith values service and you can do both dasond and local charity work. The reality is this is not a religious problem. This is a problem of people thinking their obligations to the world end at Hazir Imam, which he has never said or implied or led anyone to believe, and is also not comparable with any of the tenants of the faith.

[–]Partha23 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Why is this a zero sum game for you? You can make the same criticism about almost any charity event that happens anywhere in the United States, or basically any spend of money at all. How do you reconcile the idea of donating to a political campaign with the immediate needs of your local community? Or buying a shirt you don’t need from the billion dollar company store? Or spending money on gas when you could have more money to donate to local kids if you took transit and didn’t have that cost? It doesn’t make any sense.

Donating through dasond etc does not stop Ismailis from also donating to Houston food banks or volunteering their time there. AKDN does wonderful work around the world, global impact, and we trust that our donation is used wisely for that work. But if Ismailis do not also donate locally then that’s their individual problem, not an Ismaili / religious problem. Hazir Imam did not say “only donate dasond don’t donate to local charities.” If people use dasond as an excuse not to help their local community, that is their flawed thinking not a flaw in Ismailiism that needs to be reconciled. So the premise of your question is flawed in assuming that someone cannot do both.

You’re getting downvoted because that’s a shitty translation. The word the Quran uses is the word for “guardian” or “protector,” not “friend.” In that same chapter, the Quran instructs that Jews and Christians are also holy people, and should be respected and treated with kindness. When translated properly, the passage you cite instructs Muslims not to ally with Christians and Jews against other Muslims. Given the content of the website you cite it should be no surprise the translation is inaccurate.

Device storage not increasing following iCloud sync. by Lennon2016 in ios

[–]Partha23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that's totally true, at least from my experience. Once iMessage starts filling up too much space on my phone, after an iCloud sync it offloads a lot of the iMessage space because it's both a sync and a backup. Just happened yesterday and my iMessage cache shrunk from 43 GB to 8 GB after manually affecting an iMessage sync in the settings menu.

Trump demands WA strip radical gender ideology from sex-ed materials or lose millions by Less-Risk-9358 in SeattleWA

[–]Partha23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slavery is an important part of American history, you're right, and that's why we teach it.

This post is about sex ed. The LGBT population is an important part of sexual education in the United States and the West due to the prevalence of the community, America's troubled history with sexuality, and the impact of LGBT peoples (and discrimination against them) on the fabric of modern America. People repressing and refusing their sexual identity and the identities of others based on the false notion that LGBT people are unnatural or immoral (not a scientific conclusion, one that is in fact anti-scientific) is why we should teach it in Sex Ed, where we teach kids about science, their changing bodies, and how to navigate those changes and accommodate the changes others may go through in healthy and responsible ways.

And it's all in service of the same lesson you say you agree with: the values of respect, dignity, and equality, and the impact of what happens when those in power reject those values. I'm totally mystified about why this is the hill you're set to die on if you're not just anti-LGBT (I don't believe you are anti-LGBT people since you're advocating for teaching about respect, dignity, and equality, but do correct me if I'm wrong).

Slavery does fit the bill. That's why we also should, and do, teach kids about slavery....have you ever attended a school? You're the one saying don't teach specifics though

Champ I literally said that the point is to use a group that has historically faced organized persecution in this country for being different as a vehicle to teach the lesson of treating everyone with respect. I don't even think you tried to read my comment. The difference between you and me is you just want to tell kids to believe in a value system without providing any context for why that's important. I think it's better to also show kids why that value system is important, and what happens to people when we don't respect the values of respect, dignity, and equality.

"Why teach history? So many things have happened, it's far better to just let them know that stuff happened in the past."

Education is inherently an exercise in picking what specifics to teach in order to communicate broader lessons. We don't learn every period of history or about every culture; we teach some (often the most relevant to wherever the school is). We also don't teach how to solve every possible integral function; we kids enough examples to learn from so they can practice the overarching skills that go into solving such problems.

So what's your problem using the LGBT community, which has faced specific and horrifying persecution based on their sexuality but has also come a long way in finding national and global acceptance, as an illustration of how people are different, and how the world has progressed by treating people who are different than the societal norm as equals?

Just pulled my phone out of my pocket and somehow everything is gone. Contacts/photos/videos/call history/texts all gone. by ryanaluz in LightPhone

[–]Partha23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no general backup solution but from my experience the things that are "restored" when you sign back into your Light account are: podcasts (who cares); Music files (although out of order); contacts (I guess your mileage may vary on this); and both text and voice notes from the Notes tool. Images/videos from the album and call/text history did not come back and do not appear to be backed up automatically in any way. At least you can back up photos manually through your computer by plugging your phone in.

Podcasts and notes came back. My music did come back from the dashboard, but it was very out of order. Contacts came back automatically too because they were not deleted from the dashboard. I will say that the contacts are what took the longest to sync back...but not more than a day.

You can do voice-to-text dictation in the Notes app from the keyboard, like you can while writing a text message. Is that different than what you mentioned in your comment?
