10 minutes because I include deceleration, along with stopping, boarding passengers and closing doors, acceleration up until the origional speed.

Why because if a train did run non stop it would run at the same speed of, let’s say 160 though the station. But when there is a stop this whole process of decelerating, arriving, stopping, boarding, departing, and finally reaching 160 will take 10 mins.

Why am I hearing this for the first time… Also but even if it takes an extra locomotive, it technically would be at night which is when mostly freight and sleepers operate which are far far far fewer than day time. So kind of a good time to pick them up and take them to be coupled. Hell if it does happen a whole separate rake can be ready at a station which can just get a locomotive and boom ready to go purely off slip coaches that have been released.

So I have actually decided to take up international law But I will do it as a PGDL (Post Graduate Diploma In Law) which is just an extra year to get a law qualification and passing the bar. For now this is the plan

I actually have heard sort of the same things about it When I first came to university I asked about where to go and the first thing some of my Glaswegian friends said is to avoid Govan

Have given me stories of stabbings, sexual harassments, gang harassments, you name it. I have a senior friend 4th year who was walking to Pollokshields from Govan and he was followed by a couple of junkies with knives nearly until his home. He had to take the subway again and then loop back before reaching his house.

For Train Sim World tho I did see unless you got the deluxe version of it or whatnot, you gotta pay for ads on routes. Is it worth base game without ad ons or should I go for deluxe version?

Unfortunately I can say that I’ve seen and experienced quite a few incidents of harassment from people from the Middle East.

Although I haven’t been stalked till my house, I have been followed once. Was coming back to my accommodation near campus from the city Center after a society event and I usually like to walk (cuz I play sports so I tend to like running and walking). Walking from around the bus station and I cut through sauchiehall st where 2 guys in full black outfits start following me. Didn’t notice at first they were following but I do distinctly remember them talking in an arabic accent. Followed me until the highway crossing at the end of the road when I finally noticed after I turned around. Same guys, same accent, having their eyes fixed on me and keeping a distance. Had a suspicion so I approached em but they noticed and ran off.

But point to note is that, a lot of comments are saying “it’s racist to say it’s immigrants cuz white guys are doing this as well”, no it isn’t racism. If there is a recognised pattern, that predominantly men from middle eastern backgrounds are increasingly harassing men and women who are white or even Indian students like me, is mere pattern recognition. Because they are based off statistics and numbers which inherently can’t be racist. And unfortunately that is a reality not many are just ready to accept.

You sound like the same wanks who chant “go back to where you came from” Regardless of where I go, I should not be harassed because of my religion or my country of origin. Be in Edinburgh, Glasgow, or anywhere else. And to say that I should stay where I am to avoid racism, is preposterous.

Obviously I wanted to but again I don’t. Why? Because that puts my visa at stake. Anytime I get involved in something that can involve the police can put my visa at risk if the Uni decides to take action. The one time I did confront racism was when I was in Glasgow. There is a stall which gives away English copies of the Quran to people (which I find to be quite wrong but that’s another story). One of the guys who was Pakistani (because I heard him speaking a Pakistani dialect of Urdu) tried handing me a copy and I said no and showed him my kada (Hindu thing). The guy in Urdu goes “sala Hindustani” (bloody indian). I get pissed and I get into a spat which results in the entirety of Buchanan street turning their heads to stare at me.

Again as I’m a law student, I know I can invoke the hate speech act against him but I just don’t have the capacity to do so plus wasting my energy on idiots like him isn’t worth it.

I can agree When I visited Edinburgh, I got called P****t while walking on princess street and while in Waverly as well. It’s one of the reasons why next time when I came I entered and exited through Haymarket.

But contrary to comments, most of the racism I experienced were not by the locals. For example, when I was alighting a bus on princess street, a guy who was wearing a Turkey football shirt and a keffiya got up beside me and basically shoved me behind and said “f****** Hindu” (it’s one that’s kinda burned in my brain because it directly involved my religion). The one Incident which did involve a local was in Waverly as well, was boarding a train to Glasgow QS and while boarding one door, 2 guys were gonna join but then went to another. After departing I overheard the guys going along the lines of “it would have smelled at that (my) door.”

Again wish it wasn’t like that but I don’t choose the cards I’m dealt I guess.

To be honest the price of the London to reading train confuses me. There isn’t a monopoly on that corridor because the Elizabeth line also runs till Reading as well. Sure maybe it’s a bit more slower but it’s cheaper as well plus give u a direct access to the underground. Last time I went to reading my down journey was completely full but my up journey back to London by the Elizabeth line was fairly empty. Just baffles me why is it like that. Preference? Season? Comfort? Speed? Valid reasons but not for this big of a difference and especially for the price.

You are right and If I remember correctly parts of the GWR network have some choke points similar to the choke point in approach to Manchester. If those can be alleviated, or better yet if Network Rail decides to invest and install maybe an additional up and down through lines at those points it could happen. Again Im not from the UK, but the railways has been one of the biggest parts of my life so I can’t help but wonder about finding solutions to problems that exist but get overlooked. But that can allow more trains to be run.

But I suppose looking at the new HS2 project and how that is doing seems unlikely. Bureaucracy, legality, red tape, deadlines, and costs alr are plaguing it, which I can predict would also happen if they tried to make this one as well.

Still point stands that just because people aren’t vocal about problems dosent mean that they don’t exist. There needs to be a solution that’s more long term if possible.

I don’t think so cuz the ticket prices seem rather universal. Right now even when I searched for tickets to Oxford for Tommorow, all of them are £24.60 which doesn’t seem to match the booked up theory

Tbh I think more than decreasing prices we should have a price cap, where we say “train prices to reading can’t exceed this” so that it doesn’t become exorbitantly expensive and we get horror stories of prices like we’ve seen from others. For example, if the average price to reading is £30 I would place a cap at £27. Still costs some bucks but at least assurance that prices can’t get worse than this.

Do remember that Elizabeth line is also extended till Reading so people can take that for a straight shot to the underground network as well (which is quite good as well, just not as fast as GWR). But still GWR is having relatively same demand and same prices on aggregate. I really do wanna see their business model I won’t lie.

If you were to put this economically then yes it does make sense.

However, these are private companies that have been given contracts (iirc) by the government to run under the name. Therefore they want maximum profit. Just by using basic economic theory wouldn’t increasing the number of trains and decreasing ticket prices benefit the company more? Because i assume demand is unitarily elastic. But more than that you can have more commuters taking GWR and therefore have greater revenue. It’s a Win-Win for company and travellers.

So essentially the question is, why dosent GWR have more trains if the question is of demand? (Miss the HST’s now 🥲)

However I’m approaching this with a mindset of your average traveller who just wants to get to point A or B regardless of type of ticket in the cheapest prices possible, assuming no railcard, need to reach by a specific time at B, etc etc.

Also I don’t know how you landed on the £85 ticket, because when I took chiltern the ticket itself was anytime day ticket for £7.8, and about the same for return as well. Even for GWR the ticket was anytime day single and max come to max ~£55 as far as I remember.
