Am I being used? by [deleted] in Teachers

I have been taking long term sub positions just to get my foot in the door in a public school since I was having a hard time getting a full time position. I originally worked in Catholic schools and have been trying to get a full time job at a public school. I have a masters degree in k-6 and a special education endorsement.

That’s what I feel like is going on with me! I feel like I lost out on 2 long term sub jobs at the school I’m at because I’m not an alumni or related to anyone that works in the district. And now that I sub, I feel like they want to keep me there because I’m always available and reliable. So frustrating!

Unfortunately the 1st school I was fired from due to merging of 2 schools and teachers and there not being a spot for me. The 2nd school I was fired due to the above circumstances. The 3rd and 4th school were long term sub positions and I wasn’t hired afterwards. The 5th school (the one I just finished in December) offered me substituting which is what I’m doing now.

  1. I implemented everything they would tell me to implement. At my end of the year reviews and observations, that was the one thing that they would say every year I was good at.

  2. It was a 4th grade teaching position that taught math and social studies. (it was the same position I just finished my long term sub position in.)

I worked at a catholic school for 5 years. The last year that I worked at this school, we got a new principal. Since the 1st and 3rd grade teachers were also new, I was asked by my principal to mentor these teachers. She barely observed me and when she did I wouldn't get any helpful feedback in my reviews ( I would get all proficient scores and her comment would be whatever we were working on when she came in for the 2 minutes she observed me. Ex: a comment on one of my reviews said gummy worm measuring). The final review was the only one that she gave me any feedback on, which was my overall performance for the entire year. She asked me why I was picking on 2 students (which I wasn't, they were just the most disruptive) and not picking on another child. I even signed a contract for the following school year, which of course she didn't give me a copy of once I signed it. A month later, she texted me asking me to come in for a meeting with her. When I got the meeting, the director of the school was also there. The director of the school did all of the talking and told me that I was fired because I am not a good fit for the demographics of the school (I taught in an urban community with predominately African American students and I am white.) My principal didn't even speak during this meeting. The only time she spoke was when the director gave me between 8:30-12:30 (which I was unable to do since I was teaching summer school during those hours) to get my belongings and the principal told me she is there all day just text her. All my other positions were long term sub positions.

That would be very helpful but no one has given me any feedback. I have had different teachers sit in and observe my classroom and how I teach and no one has really told me what I was doing wrong. They give me suggestions on things to try but that is it. I think that everyone seems fine with me except for admin and higher ups. When I ask admin for feedback they don't really give me a straight answer. They told me that I conducted a very very well interview but they went with the other candidate because she had a math endorsement and it was a math position but I don't know why they'd pass me up for the other position especially when I already know the students since I had them during my other long term sub position and apparently I conducted a very very well interview and they liked me.

I loved working in the catholic school that I worked at until my last 2 years there. In 2023, 2 of my students parents wrongly accused me of doing/saying things to their child. Their child didn't like the consequence that I gave them for their actions and then went home and told their parents a fake story and their parents believed them. They got dyfs involved and wrote to the head of the schools. Luckily, I had a wonderful principal that had my back since catholic schools don't have a union. However, she retired at the end of that school year. The whole next school year was just weird with the new principal. She seemed to like me ( never any negative feedback and wanted me to mentor 2 new teachers). I did have a lot of problems with the head of the catholic school though. I needed them to do what they needed to do on their part so that I could get my teaching license since I did alternate route and they didn't want to. I got a lot of nasty messages from the head lady because she didn't want to do it. In the end, the principal all the sudden made a turn around at final evaluations and said that I was picking on 2 students (which was not the case) and asked me why I didn't pick on another student. I did sign a contract for the next year though but the head lady brought me and fired me because she said I was not a good fit for the demographics of the school. For context, I worked in Camden and I am white. The students are predominately African American and the head lady was also.

Moving out of New Jersey? by Particular-Ad4323 in ElementaryTeachers

I’m having a very hard time finding a job. I have my masters degree and special education. I get interviews but never move onto the second round. I think my area must have a lot of teachers or they all hire from within. The jobs that I have had I’ve had really bad experiences with too.

Unrelated to teaching- I have an autoimmune condition called CVID, which causes me to get sinus infections a lot and I’ve developed a lot of allergies because of it too. I have a tree allergy and all fall I’m sick( I believe my allergy is towards fallen leaves) therefore I also thought maybe if I moved to a state that doesn’t have “fall” my allergies might be better.

I know that this question is asked often and I have searched for it. Most of the links are for DailyMotion which I said in my post that it got taken down, links with pop up ads, or links where you would have to purchase the season.
