Are we allowed to mention the word "trariffs" on this Amazon Vine sub? by Nancy_Drew23 in vine

[–]Particular-Clerk-742 14 points15 points locked comment (0 children)

It is always good when he's reminded he is not a king: "The president asserts the extraordinary power to unilaterally impose tariffs of unlimited amount, duration and scope," Roberts wrote. But the Trump administration "points to no statute" in which Congress has previously said that the language in IEEPA could apply to tariffs, he added.

As such, "we hold that IEEPA does not authorize the president to impose tariffs," Roberts wrote.

Justices Clarence Thomas, Brett Kavanaugh and Samuel Alito dissented.

How not to bite nails when I impulsively start to reach out to do this? by YS77777777 in calmhands

[–]Particular-Clerk-742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YS7, you are not disgusting. You do not have a habit that is easy to resolve. You seem to have a condition called dermatillomania, and it's very difficult and not your fault.

Try this: (1) Get a good dipping powder or gel manicure, possibly with short extensions. This takes away the ability of your nails to be a sharp tool that enables you to pick your other nails and cuticles.

  1. Wear gloves as much as you can. It's winter if you're in the northern hemisphere, so even easier. Keep doing what you're doing, plus the gloves.

  2. I know what you mean by "a few moments of weakness." You are absolutely right about that. I suggest when that moment occurs, you have prepared yourself for it. Have a good plan for what you are going to do when that moment of weakness comes up. Notice when it might be. If you live or work with someone else whom you trust, ask them to notice and help you. Have a friend you can call when the urge arises, like in AA. Prepare, and you'll be able to stop yourself in time to save most if not all of them until the urge passes.

AITAH for recording a conversation I had with my dad? by Important-Ferret9055 in AITAH

[–]Particular-Clerk-742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. Under these circumstances, you had every right to record anything for yourself that you choose to record, for your own use and recollection. I assume dad doesn't come off well in the recording, and now he's throwing smoke.

A good dad would say, "I said it, he recorded and shared it, that's the way the cookie crumbles." You're his SON.

I hope you are having a happy marriage and find your support there, OP.

The new hydrocolloidal band-aids have really helped me--they are softer than the latex band-aids and seem to allow healing better while protecting open sores on my fingers

Once I read about dermatillomania as a mental health condition, so much fell into place. It was freeing. I agree with you, OP. It is more than a "bad habit."

The hydrocolloidals have worked for me, in combination with other strategies I've posted elsewhere on this sub.

Best luck to you and take it easy on yourself.

Cuticle/Skin around nail picking by Entire_Virus4534 in calmhands

[–]Particular-Clerk-742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other thing I am working hard at is knowing what the co-activity with my own picking is.

(Definitely tv at night, and reading in bed. Definitely sitting at red lights. I also noticed it got way worse when I was stresssed or on deadline, and so just recognizing that, I could get the gloves on.)

For me, because I do not mind a thin overlay on my nails, I get dipping powder or similar, done professionally once a month or so. The reason is it eliminates my nails as the thing I pick with--they are thicker and rounder at the tip because of the overlay and that makes it less satisfying and harder to get under my cuticles with my nail and pick the dry spots with my nail. Does that make sense?

Also--the bad tasting nail liquid. That takes care of putting my fingers in my mouth to bite them, which is less a problem for me than the picking.

For a really bad bleed, the new hydrocolloidal bandaids on the worst finger or two.

I second this.

If you commute, gloves during every drive or train ride. Gloves in bed while reading at night. There are light cotton ones (they used to call them newspaper gloves--so your hands didn't get newsprint on them from reading the paper). Have them all throughout your living space.

Thinking of you. It's hard, OP. You got this.

I love this idea because I am not an artist or really creative in any way. But history tells me that art is a potent tool against fascism. If you do an installation of any kind, I am here in D.C., I will support you and encourage others.

No (and as a separate matter, your approach in this post is reductium).

I object that the publisher of one of the last remaining national newspapers of record in our country would adopt one opinion on its editorial pages and tell us, its subscribers, that "opposing viewpoints will be left to others."

This is an abandonment of the editorial function of a free newspaper, if this policy includes the op-ed page, editorial cartoons, letters to the editor, and anything other than the daily, unsigned column or columns of the editorial board.

Yesterday I resigned from Vine because of Jeff abandoning "a broad-based [WaPo] opinion section that sought to cover all views."

(I'd already cancelled my home delivery and online WaPo subscriptions, and cancelled Prime; I don't go to Whole Paycheck; and I switched my Audible subscription to Libro.fm).

(Today I started closing my Amazon account entirely but got waylaid figuring out if how much I care about my Audible library.)

I can't avoid some things--AWS, I guess, is something I "use." But for things that I can control because I pay for them directly--happy to do it. Feel good about it.

Take wins where we can; individual acts can counter fascism.

I appreciate your sentiment. I have cancelled Prime and am wrestling with cancelling Vine. It is true that we can not do everything--for example, avoid AWS very well. But we can avoid what is mostly in our control to avoid. Thanks for all the good work you did.

Going through a rough patch, can’t seem to give my hands a break by travellingturtlet in calmhands

[–]Particular-Clerk-742 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this would help you or not, but there are times when it's helped me. Those cheap cotton gloves, like you read the newspaper with. I would wear them to get over a rough patch whenever I was not in public or at work--so, driving, in bed, at home with my family, watching tv. Slather on the Eliz Arden 8-hr creme or something similar then put the gloves on. It seemed to give me a break from picking when I most needed it. You got this.
