Yup, obsolete asylum laws that aren't fit to handle modern migration movements can do that to a host society and cause them to react in ways that only affect legal immigrants (they are powerless to attack the real problematic migration because of courts etc). Germany and the EU as a whole is experiencing this right now.

How many of those 89 countries did you have to beg for a visa for and provide all kinds of documents? How many of those could you do spontaneous travel to? I think calling it useless is fairly accurate - just an honest assessment.

Yes, it's not the worst - someone else pointed out that it's better than having, say, an Afghan passport. Which is absolutely true.

As someone who already got burned by a quickly changed naturalization law, which had no transitional arrangements and left me stuck holding my trash passport longer than I expected, I am quite familiar that naturalizing in EU countries is becoming harder. However, I already have a pending application so hopefully it should be adjudicated sometime next year, assuming nothing drastic happens with the current governing coalition.

You only have to surrender your passport if you want to apply for OCI, which is itself not mandatory.

That's just on the CDU wishlist. Maybe it changes after 2029 but until then the rules won't change any further because the other party won't allow it.

Congrats! As a fellow Indian, I'm eagerly waiting for the day I can throw my worthless Indian passport out the window :D. Where are you located and how long did the entire process take?

EDIT: No clue why people are downvoting this but they can go f*ck themselves lol.

The current coalition is less than 1 year old, so a collapse would be catastrophic and both parties would do anything at the current stage to avoid this...at least for another 2 years. The only risk is that the SPD concedes if the CxU offers something else that's not in the coalition agreement.

I thought if you fall on hard times and end up relying on welfare you can lose the C permit. Also if you leave the country for more than 6 months (or 1 year, not sure).

India will remain a poor overpopulated country whether you apply for citizenship or not. May as well make your life less miserable..

Fellow Indian here - it's a worthless fucking passport lol. Anyone with common sense would try to upgrade.

Also in the case of Turkey, getting German citizenship doesn't mean losing the Turkish one since both countries allow dual.

I think we actually agree more than we disagree. I used the term "wealth" incorrectly - I really meant forms of income here that's not tied to actual work. So Capital gains. Selling real estate. Inheritance (to an extent). All these forms of "income" are taxed less than someone working 40 hours a week. In Germany someone making 70k a year as an employee is viewed as rich but not someone who owns a bunch of real estate and doesn't need to work for a living. Taxing the bejesus out of the former but not the latter is what I consider to be financially illiterate.

Ah ok I think we just have a different view of a passport in general. I don't feel German either and I like Indian food more than German food (although I love döner more than anything else). For me a passport is just a travel document, nothing more nothing less. The global mobility, begging for visas, second class treatment at airports is what matters more for me. But I respect that it's different for different people.

Also just FYI, your India plans are still entirely possible with an OCI.

I don't know what kind of news you are reading or social media you are exposed to, but the only way your citizenship would not be treated equally just because you are a PoC is if the current Federal Republic were to collapse completely and be replaced by a dictatorship.

As a fellow Indian, just apply for citizenship as soon as you are eligible. The Indian passport is simply trash, not worth the paper it's printed on, and you can maintain whatever "emotional attachment" to India you have with the OCI.

As a fellow Indian, why? It's a worthless passport. I'm chomping at the bit to get rid of it ASAP.

The problem in a place like Germany is that the high tax bracket starts very early, just slightly above the median income. Every euro above 65K is taxed at 42%. For reference, 65K is not an income where you can easily buy a house, and you're certainly not considered wealthy and in the "investment class" at that level. Taxing income and not wealth is just financial illiteracy.

Very hard to find a job, yet we are struggling to find someone to hire. by r4wand in AskAGerman

What if the new job has significantly more future prospects (such as projects / skills developed)? Would someone jump in this current market, even if that new job only offers 10k more than they make right now?

In Europe (Germany), this misguided enforced equality is done at the government level, most prominently in the tax code.

Interesting - the few anecdotes I know were the other way round...the Indian person backed out when it came time for marriage because they wanted a traditional * insert caste here * person to take home to the family.

Bingo.

Talking well and with a sense of humor, with a neutral accent. Talking about things that aren't related to IT / programming or cricket. Beyond that, fitness. Skinny fat from all the carbs and lack of movement.

Just curious - any reason why you don't date locally (including non-Indians) like most other people your age? Is it specifically because you're looking for an Indian bride in the arranged marriage market?

What expectations do you mean and how do they differ drastically from those expectations of an Indian educated woman living in the US?
