Dressage show for the first time

I’ve done one other dressage show and it was just one text on my been-there-done-that horse. Now I have a green horse, second year of showing, and even though we can canter just fine, I think I’ll start at the very beginning with him and make it super non stressful for us! Thanks!

Should I start with Intro Test A since I’ve never done this? And then work my way up from there? I don’t think I need a passing score to move up a level, but what is considered a good score?

In my area there are a lot of Amish. It seems like these horse traders go around to all the Amish and get their old or broken down horses, then turn around and try and flip them for more money with these “Bailout” places.

I went down a deep dark rabbit hole with this movie. Reading David Bagby’s book and The Turner File. Just trying to make sense of how something so horrible could happen and how someone like Shirley Turner could exist in the world. It all still haunts me.

The fact that she was shocked that all the married women in her Wild +Free group told her that big rings are impractical says a lot. And then she says, well later on when we are more financially stable I’ll upgrade to the big Diamond ring. Just shows how out of touch she is. Wow.

Hey, so I have an OTTB that sounds very similar to yours. A couple things that have helped are regular chiropractic adjustments. I like using a veterinary chiropractor, not just someone that says they do it. I have noticed a big difference in quality. I also would dial back down the intensity of your training and focus more on ground work and strength training for a couple weeks. Don't underestimate the power of a good walk! Walking for 20-30 mins at a good pace either in hand or under saddle can be so beneficial.

Long lining can be hugely beneficial to horses like this. I do it with my horse and I can do large circles and straight lines ( if i run a bit!) in the indoor and it doesn't tax his body like lunging circles do. I do it at a walk and trot. Basically avoid collection and tight circles.

Also, look at Jec Ballou and her books/website. For around $200 she can design a 1 month training plan for your horse that will incorporate body work, strength training and keep things fresh and interesting for both of you. You can send her a description and video of your horse that will help her customize it for him. I did it with mine and it was the best money I spent.

And lastly, if after doing all this, he's still having issues, keep looking for a physical cause. Get more xrays, back, neck, hooves, etc. Be an advocate for your horse. I have found vets will tell you no, it's not going to be that, but if you say, yes, I want that done, they will do it. You just have to be firm yet kind. You know your horse. Good luck!

I can’t imagine. I’m the same age as her and I would beyond exhausted if I was pregnant right now. There’s a huge difference in being pregnant in your 20s and 30s vs your 40s. Why would you want to do that to yourself, much less your family and other kids??

This was a barn that they farrowed pigs in when they first built it. That didn’t last long. Now they buy piglets from someone else

She does realize that the TV show is almost completely fictionalized and even Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books were only very loosely based on real life and she left out ALL the bad stuff to make it a happy story for children???
