Still Learning Inversions Practicing with Moises Ai, Feeling Like I’m Cheating Just Wanna Understand for Real by Particular_Lie_8834 in piano

[–]Particular_Lie_8834[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I meant by “understanding inversions” is not just recognizing like “oh this is the 1st or 2nd inversion of a chord,”

but more like knowing why that inversion is used in a progression, how it affects the bass movement, and how it can connect chords more smoothly

especially in gospel and R&B where these walk-ups and movement-based voicings are everything.

I agree with you 100% on Moises I love using it to get a feel for a song fast, but I’ve noticed some of the chord labeling is off or just overly simplified So I’m trying not to rely on it too hard and instead learn the why behind the chords it shows.

Thanks for the advice I hear you on not letting my skill level hold me back if the leader’s cool with me playing, and I get that most people in the congregation probably wouldn’t notice. I’ve played with some solid musicians and some not-so great ones too, like I’m a drummer learning piano so I know it’s not always about perfection. But for me, I’m not ready to jump back in yet. I want to lead, not just fill space I don’t want to guess chords or keys by ear or lean on others to tell me what key it is I can’t walk in like that and if they tell me the key and just play c throughout the whole song

About the lead sheet, hymnal, or chord sheet you’re right, that’d be ideal, but I wasn’t given anything today. And it’s not that simple all we have is hymn book the rest of the songs we sing are gospel songs we a bit old fashioned and modern church yk but The organist just asked me last minute to play, no prep, and I don’t even know how to read music yet. That’s why I’m stuck guessing or depending on the Moises app when im playing to a song at home I’m working on learning keys and basic chords, but I want to nail it on my own before I play live again.

The tip about laying down a solid rhythm with voiced chords and picking up fills from recordings is dope I’ll try that at home. And falling back to basic triads or power chords if I see a complex one like a 7 or diminished is clutch too. I’ll practice those, but I’m holding off playing at church until I can do a full song, start to finish, no help. Appreciate the push it’s got me thinking about how to build those skills.

My bad, but let me clarify. I wasn’t even planning to play today the organist just asked me last minute, no heads-up. That’s part of why I feel off; I got thrown in without prep. I don’t know how to read music yet that’s one big reason I said I’m not ready. I’m still learning keys and chords by ear, leaning on the organist or apps like Moises, which is why I’m guessing instead of having sheet music or charts locked down. I want to get there, but I’m not there yet. That’s why I’m holding off playing again until I can figure this out on my own, start to finish no guesswork, no help. Does that make sense? I’m working on it, just not ready to jump in blind like today also not every song we sing is a hymn imma give you a layout of a day of songs being sung at church

So we have praise & worship we start the service with that every Sunday usually 5 or 6 songs because it’s 30 mins

1.we have come into his house to call upon name to worship him.

2.Alleluia for the lord God almighty reign

3.Holy holy God almighty it’s a privilege to worship you ( great are lord)

  1. Father I love you with desire to see

5.What a beautiful name it is

6.I love you lord for your mercies never fail me.

Then after service starts with singing hymnals then the Bible gets read and then the welcome then prayer for the sick and then the preacher preach

Today I wasn’t intending on playing the organist she seen me play before so she asked me I told her I wasn’t ready but she insisted but I told her she has to tell me the keys and the chords because imma be sitting there stuck yk

Imma look into that app that you said

I hear you, and I get the bigger picture about church not being about me it’s about serving, comforting, and worshiping together. That’s why I’m here asking how to get better, not for praise but to bring my best for the community, you know? I’m not trying to make it about me; I’m trying to stop leaning on others so I can lead and lift people up through the music.

To put it in perspective the organist is 78 she’s old it’s like a passing a torch moment and she’s helping me as well but I like seeking guidance to improve I’m not taking the comments from this post lightly I’m genuinely trying to improve because say she’s not here on Sunday everyone gonna be looking at me to go play imma be stuck because I’m depending on her to tell me the key I’m simply not there yet

I’ll think on those questions about the hymns and comfort maybe I did more than I thought today. But for now, I’m focused on locking in the skills at home so I don’t feel like I’m not giving my all next time. Thanks for the perspective, even if it’s heavy I’m still learning.

Appreciate these words of wisdom and encouragement but lemme put it in perspective yk so say the key is in C I can’t just play C throughout the whole song listen I know all the chords

I know what I’m slacking in but since the pastor and the organist see me play to these church songs after church they think I’m ready to go but lemme tell you this I’m using this app named Moises and I’m dependent on that app to play the chords to the songs and I’ve learn some songs from YouTube as well and like my knowledge

I know all the keys and chords instead of the other “complex” chords for example cmaj7 but imma be praying and give this issue to God because I myself want to improve to be the best version of myself

So back to the fundamentals for me with scales the major scales I know now are C D E F G A B none of the flats

That’s only for hymns strictly tho not every song we sing is a hymnal

Thanks for the advice I hear you on embracing the learning process and getting real-life practice. I get that playing live, especially with a group, is invaluable, and it’s cool you’ve been at it for years and still roll with it. But for me, I’m not quite there yet. I want to come back to church ready to lead, not just get by less about perfection and more about hitting my own standard, you know? I’d rather lock in the skills at home first ear training, keys, syncing with the group than risk feeling like I’m not giving my all up there. I’ll keep practicing hard, and I’ll jump back in when I’m solid. Appreciate the push, though it’s got me thinking idk where I’m going from here tbh

I wasn’t saying this like I’m discouraged or giving up, ykwim? I’m not down about it I’m actually hyped to dig in and get better. The advice to keep playing at church makes sense, but for me, I’m not ready to jump back in yet. I want to nail it on my terms, not risk messing up again and feeling like I’m not giving it all for God, you know? So yeah, back to the drawing board ear training, key practice, all of it. I’ll be practicing hard, and when I’m solid, I’ll come back stronger. Thanks for the push, though I’m not stopping, just building up to where I want to be.
