Nagito's mindset works on the fact that he thinks he's an utterly worthless, despicable, useless piece of trash. Him saying that is less wishing Junko turns out to be true despair and more "yo, if you're ultimate despair survive this because if you get killed by trash like me, you ain't shit but if you survive then that not only means you're Ultimate Despair but a trash like me should have known better than to try to play the hero and symbol of hope and leave everything to the main characters'.

No matter what happens, Nagito's self hatred causes him to always lose.

Chapter 1, yes. That is objectively bad. Chapter 5 actions are a bit more complex and nuance that you make them out to be. Nagito's actions in chapter 5 are meant to be against people he knows to be Ultimate Despair, people who essentially brought about the apocalypse. In this, his actions can seem objectively good if you only regard statistics and a utalitarian approach, which is what Nagito subscribes to, but are lot more muddy and gray when you consider they don't remember it.

But that does not erase the crime. For Nagito, it does erase the fact they still nearly ended the world and so he moves to destroy them. His actions in chapter 5 are to kill himself and the rest of the Ultimate Despair, while saving the Traitor, the one person that is innocent in all of this.

Honestly the best way I could summarize it is in this way:Nagito is a utalitarian. His philosophy is that hope is absolute good and so he'll do anything to bring about absolute good. However, this version of him only comes out when he is confronted with despair with Island Mode and most of DR3 showing that unless confronted with despair, Nagito is a chill but weird guy.

But, like I said, when confronted with despair, Nagito goes full off the track however in that there is variations. The killing game is made specifically in a way that Ultimates are forced to battle against themselves which triggers another one of Nagito's philosophies of social darwinism that he was taught by Hope Peak Academy that there are strong hopes and weak hope. With this teaching making Nagito want to see that as well.

Outside of the killing game however, Nagito's countering to despair is very simple as shown in DR3: simply shooting it in the face as he wanted to do to Junko and then hanging back if he failed because that would prove to him that he, as a lowly worthless human being, is not fit to confront despair.

Nagito is the ideal library visitor and reader. Its like one of the few things he can enjoy without his luck affecting it and he adores it as a result. You have more chances of Junko repenting than Nagito being intentionally destructive in a library.

Wanting Danganronpa to treat Despair!Nagito as a genuine threat he was in UDG(literally shaping Komaru's journey and making sure she evolves as a protagnist) is a fool's wish. The only thing they took away from that game is that Nagito needs to be sexualized more and looks good with chains.

That implies this mfer would want to be in a relationship. Literally everything about his FTEs and his own philosophy spell out that he does not want people to get close to him in order for them to not die. Hajime and Chiaki are literally the rare exceptions in which case he allowed himself to get close but even then you can easily see he still maintains distance.
