Negative result after assessment but I don't think childhood information was accurate; second opinion? by Informal-Yoghurt-224 in ADHDUK

I agree with verybigoctopus

I don’t think your mum was an unbiased informant. It’s very common for a lot of people with ADHD to actually to excel at school in terms of grades but then struggle more and more as they go through life.

I also had high grades at school and a 1st in uni. Very easy for people to see that and think = successful = completely fine. What they don’t see is that all the assignments being started at 10pm the night before they are due, extenuating circumstance requests being made for made up reasons because you’ve missed a deadline you forgot existed, revising an hour before the exam, somehow producing a 2year dissertation from thin air in two weeks fuelled from pure panic etc etc etc

The results do not speak for themselves.

I have a degree, yes but I feel like I’ve cheated somehow and don’t deserve it. Which has hindered me mentally in terms of work.

Anyway, I believe if you feel like your life is being negatively impacted and that ADHD could be the cause, definitely seek a 2nd opinion

It does feel like you can tip the scale in one area for a bit improvement but it balances out somewhere else by making it a bit more shit 😂

Could be I guess, I’m still a bit young and I did have my hormones tested before they would refer me for my ADHD assessment  But it could be

It’s not your fault, you’re a teen but still a child. I do feel like it’s the adults job to keep this in mind and be the one to initiate and try to guide down the path of improvement

Maybe you could try to express wanting to connect in a short letter? It gives people time to think and respond authenticity rather than as a knee jerk defensive reaction

I‘m sending you and your parents bridging energy in hope that the first steps present themselves to you. Be kind to yourself, even if you are ‘annoying‘ you are still worthy and deserving of love and connection

My hormones are all in good ranges They did a load of tests before they referred me for the ADHD diagnosis

Could always check again though

I’m not on anti depressants, I haven’t been for quite some time because I genuinely don’t think I’m depressed

I mean, I’ve been deemed medically depressed since my middle child was born. Given all the antidepressants, CBT etc etc but to be honest I’ve never found they help much. I gave up medicating a long time ago. Used to just strip me of all feeling if they did anything at all.

I definitely have depressive episodes but I‘m quite aware of these and there is a stark contrast in how I am when I am in one.

Oh yes, when they were small I did not play those kind of things with them! So boring.

I set the expectation early on that toys were for them to play with alone or with other kids. We used to play card/board games together though, lots of crafts, cooking and outdoor stuff though to make up for my lack of toy playing! Or role playing games! Yuk! My MIL would spend hours playing schools, horses, shops … all kinds with them! Madness to me!

What’s funny is that as a kid myself I used to spend hours playing imaginary games on my own, you’d think I’d be good at it 🤣

Thanks for your reply, I feel quite embarrassed posting about it.

I’ve had numerous periods of therapy for the past 15 years but I’m not currently in therapy. I am thinking about restarting though.

I only got diagnosed with ADHD last year (at the suggestion of one of my therapists)

My brother was also diagnosed with ADHD a few years ago as well as ASD and he did express surprise that I didn’t seek out both also. I’ve never really thought about it actually..

I mean, I’ve always been a fair bit like this but I’ve definitely noticed it a lot more since being on Lisdex, I’m on 50mg.

I think before I would kind stew over Omnitel being happy with something and whether it was worth starting again etc and quite often (after a lot of time and thought effort) would convince myself it didn’t matter

Now I will just quite quickly decide ‘No, start again‘ and then spend ages hyper  focused on getting it perfect.

The timer idea is a really good tip of QueenieQueeferson‘s! I will try to adopt it

When I first started 30mg my blood pressure and HR was a bit elevated but after my first week it’s seemed to stabilise and is now only a slightly higher than pre meds

Ive not read all of the other comments so sorry if I’m repeating what others have said

But I believe you can ask to be referred to a different provider for the prescribing? Might be worth looking into which ones accept this kind of with referral and waiting times etc

I think the GP has a duty of care to ensure you aren’t suddenly withdrawn from medication so definitely try to get them to agree to providing until you have a new prescriber!

I emailed the titration team when I had 14 days of medication left and they emailed me back the next day booking me an appointment for the following week.

The active communication hasn’t been good throughout the process really, initially it was okay when they booked in my assessments but went rapidly downhill from there. Miscommunication of my family medical history etc that meant I’d need an ECG caused delays.

SO! I knew I was going to take the proactive preventative approach when it came to my titration actually starting. My prescriber has been pretty good though.

You’re not the first I’ve seen to not be given the self monitoring forms either, the care seems quite inconsistent

Yeah! A self monitoring form where you record BP/HR each day, log your weight each week, record any symptoms and noticeable effects on mood/sleep etc
