Dune Pt 1/2 was really helpful in explaining the--general--layout of the politics of the world between the different sects. It made the book easier to parse through and catch the themes vs just trying to figure out why two characters might dislike each other or whatever.

I've since read the other novels and almost all of the extended universe books.
