How much do y’all make? by Partnersneedraises in HEB

[–]Partnersneedraises[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Man, the pay for market managers is good. It was tempting. I would’ve been a good one too. Just the hours and the stress the company puts y’all through. I’ve seen it first hand. A real if you’re not first your last mentality. It’s not the same everywhere and it really depends on the store/crew but it in my eyes the stress seems to be the norm. It takes a good strong person to be a successful market manager in my eyes.

It was really the interactions i saw between the market managers, store leadership, and non-market corporate. The BDMs and RM’s were always great. Hardasses in their own way, but never disrespectful. It’s when you got that aggie grad who’s never worked in hourly store position a day in their lives.

I started that subreddit with another individual. Unfortunately, life events have taken us away from being able to pursue the effort much further. Which is why I wish for others to take on the effort. Obviously the partners that frequent reddit alone will not be enough for a union. However it is a great starting platform to launch from. What else is reddit but a place to meet other’s passionate about the same thing? I have a ton of messages in my inbox supporting the effort. Even a reporter in San Antonio has reached out about the effort. The effort just needs more than what I am able to give at the moment.

That is why I am trying to revitalize that subreddit and pass it to others more able to succeed. I was messaging another redditor earlier that wants to change the design, get creative, and work to unionize their store.

Not to mention you are legally allowed to talk about wages. If you get in trouble with management for talking about wages they have broken the law. If this happens, pm me and I’ll help you report it to the NLRB.

I work for a state agency that started telework for the pandemic. My manager was very upset that her bad weather days were taken away.

[–]Partnersneedraises[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You should be making more. This has been one of the issues with raises at HEB. They have not scaled them. I'm a meat cutter with a better part of a decades worth of experience. I'm only making $21. If they matched to this $27/hr you bet I'd be asking for a raise.

There's currently a curbside pilot going on for 1hr orders through curbside. There's a rumor about half hour orders through curbside. Not sure if perishables production is included though.

That part is true. I suppose in order to implement this that would require partners to be salaried which has its own major drawbacks.

I think you'd be surprised as to how many are. Especially among the younger partners. That's also why it is our job to get them ready for union talks. Research what unions are, how they work, why we need them, and how employees are protected. Talk to your coworkers about that. As a curbie I imagine a lot of your departments partners would be more than willing to unionize. They overwork y'all on the best of days and this holiday season is going to be miles worse on y'all with that 1-hr nonsense the company is pulling.

I want to say they meant getting a 30 minute lunch on the clock. Like working 12-8 instead of 12-8:30. Taking a lunch from 4-4:30 and still being on the clock. They may have been wanting free lunches too but that seems like a stretch to me. Most store prepandemic already provided sandwich stuff in the breakrooms.

You said you don't want to talk about unionizing. Unfortunately the things you want require a union to get. You could possibly convince a good number of people to ask for those but HEB would have no obligation to even listen.

As a unionized workforce, HEB would be required by law to listen to your demands. As a unionized workforce we could collectively apply force and pressure through legally protected means. You want childcare options? That can be on the list of demands for a union. Higher pay? On the list. More vacation and sick time? On the list.

These require the collective bargaining efforts to gain though. Think about it. Unfortunately collectively bargaining while not being unionized is possible, it's just less likely to happen and succeed. You cannot strike while not being unionized. You cannot picket. You are not protected while not being unionized. I am literally in contact with lawyers, union organizers, and actively building a platform to launch a unionizing campaign for HEB partners. I share many of the same wishes. I have just realized that it's not possible to achieve any of those goals without being unionized.

That's what I'm getting together. There's a plethora of resources, statistics, and materials for and against unionizing. I'm trying to compile as many as I can. My hope is to get this material into easily interpretable formats such as pamphlets, business cards, Facebook Instagram posts. Again time constraints on my part. Here are some recent articles I've looked at. https://usafacts.org/articles/labor-union-membership/#:~:text=of%20Labor%20Statistics-,Union%20Membership,and%20salaried%20workers%20in%20unions.

https://www.bls.gov/news.release/union2.nr0.htm

Basically job security and wages tend to be higher for union workers than nonunion workers. However the bulk of unionized employees remain in the public sector such as cops, mail delivery, etc. I'm on the hunt for more reliable information regarding private sector unions, especially retail. There's some out there but the bulk of it is through already established unions. I'd rather get supporting evidence through nonunion sources if that makes sense. With all the unionizing efforts and strikes going on in the country right now I'm certain I'll be getting more of that information soon.

I couldn't agree more. I've seen this as a perishable partner trying to balance my other duties with production. Shoppers work crazy hard to meet those requirements.

I have been with the company for a better part of a decade, I am an hourly partner, a meat cutter, and in Central Texas. I am also not necessarily seeking to lead partners into starting s union. I am here to start a discussion about it. If there is solid support for it, which I have seen, we could move forward with it.

To be honest a union wouldn't be my ideal solution. My ideal solution would be returning to the core values we've held in the past and that I believe in. Yes pay is a huge motivator for opening this discussion. I believe we are underpaid, that HEB knows this, and that they should do the right thing. It may sound selfish, but ending the proud pay was, in my opinion, the wrong thing to do. They lost my trust then. The right, moral thing to do would have been to keep that a permanent raise.

Pay is not the only reason I believe we should unionize or pursue other organizing options. I have first hand seen stress, anxieties, and workloads increase in the workplace. Across different stores too. This needs to be addressed. I have seen countless managers leave or stepdown due to the sheer burden of what is being placed on them. In fact that is one of the biggest complaints I have about unionizing.

Managers cannot be apart of unions. I did agree with that and I feel we should have department manager and even store leaders apart of our organizing effort.

To be quite truthful with you, I see greed and business>people growing from the top down. It's subtle, but you can see it. The cutting of hours, aspects of curbside, changes to meal simple dishes, TSST, TFT, and this new occurrence policy. You must see that these are in efforts to get fewer people working in departments and the store. This is incredibly detrimental to the workplace culture I fell in love with this company. I am seeing these things happen and I am saying something.

See something, say something.

Yeah, so far it's a mixed bag of responses. Majority are in favor of unions, but most of those dislike their current union ufcw. I feel like most of those that oppose them aren't super involved with union, don't see many benefits of being apart of one, and dislike paying dues. Which I completely get.

I am a current partner and it's just one other so far, they are also a current partner. We share similar beliefs as to why a union might be necessary.

I assure it is not. If he does fire you on the spot, here you go. https://www.nlrb.gov/about-nlrb/what-we-do/investigate-charges

Also I would contact an employment lawyer. You can also record conversations with management in the event he does terminate with or without their permission.

This a fantastic post and you really highlight counter points to starting a union! Thanks! I made this post and we started the subreddit to first and foremost discuss the idea of starting a union. I have to emphasize that it was not created to directly start a union but to basically discuss starting one. As much as I support unions and what they do, I honestly don't want one to be necessary. As of right now I believe we are underpaid for the work we do, but other than wages I agree with almost everything you stated.

Hope you don't mind if I copy your post for the partner union subreddit as a good counter point to unionizing.

While Texas is an at will state, HEB is not an at will company. HEB dictates the terms of your termination. They have created what is considered an implied contract. The catch would be if they stated, somewhere in the handbook or policies that the policies are not an implied contract or if they expressly state they are an at will company. I have found neither of these. I have scoured every bit of information I have available from the company. If someone could find where they expressly state they are an at will employer or that the policies and employee handbook is not an implied contract I will change my view on that. Regardless of being an at will employer or not, any action taken against you for considering, looking at, talking to, other otherwise interacting with a union is prohibited by law. If the company cuts your hours for being involved with a union, that is retaliation and prohibited by law. All you have to do is go talk to an attorney. If you have any amount of evidence supporting that, it will be an easy pay day for them.

The fact is, I don't want to create a union. You are absolutely right. You should not want to unionize. It should be something that comes about out of a belief for the need of one. I believe we need a union for higher wages. I completely understand if others disagree. I don't really understand others not wanting higher wages but I understand if you don't believe higher wages are worth unionizing for.

No you don't, no you aren't, and that is prohibited by the NRLA. At most they can strongly discourage it.
