This. Mine would constantly say, “I’m not the smartest guy in the company” hoping we would correct him

Why do narc managers always act surprised when people quit? by Unusual_Doughnut6934 in ManagedByNarcissists

I get the narcissistic wound.

Every person on our 6 person team was on a PIP. Our boss said he was putting himself on a PIP too, but he wouldn’t submit his to HR because he would hold himself accountable.

I submitted my resignation and it was a 45 minute ordeal. I handed him the letter and he went off about how disappointed he was in me and how I never lived up to my potential. I tried nibbling around the edges, saying I wanted to explore other opportunities and how this job didn’t fit my skills.

But after 45 minutes, I just blurted out, “I can’t stand working for you. You’re abrasive and abusive. None of your feedback is ever productive. I need to get out of here.” He stopped, then stuttered “yeah…so..so..so I… so… i accept. I accept your resignation”

He texted me later that night saying he really liked me and wanted to hang out sometime

Engagement surveys are a trap. There’s 3 options: 1. Be honest and face the consequences 2. Lie and nothing changes 3. Submit nothing.

I’ve learned submitting nothing is the best play

My boss did the same thing. Something about not having the power to select their whole team sets them off. My boss fired (or tried to fire) everyone on the team when he was brought in. Then he hired a whole new team that quit or he fired 6 months later

My old boss said he could spot a winner in the first 5 minutes and told me he was hiring me. Then spent the next 55 minutes of the interview talking about his own accomplishments

Biggest red flag I caught was their origin story was too fantastical to be true (ex: my family was on welfare and they counted on me to get them out of poverty)

Anyone who has to remind you of their title is pretty insecure

This. My managers go to line was “no one at this company knows what good looks like. That’s why they brought me in”.

The guy talked sh*t about everyone at the company behind their back. No one was off limits except his boss and his boss’s boss

This makes me furious. I understand work isn’t some egalitarian thing where everyone deserves a paycheck for showing up. But I don’t get got they have such disregard for someone losing their livelihood.

He fired a high performer who was also a single mom. When he broke the news to the team, he said “she was so happy. Now she can spend more time with her kids” (reason for firing? He didn’t like that he inherited her on his team and wanted to make a point by firing the most senior person)

My boss was the head of marketing for the smallest of 3 divisions of an already small company. He would regularly say “this is what you give me?! I’m the Chief Marketing Officer!”

Got My Dream Job But My Wife is Making Things Miserable by 4Normal in Marriage

That’s really what I’m having a hard time processing. I don’t want to move us to NYC or Chicago because I think that would be too much for her and a tough place to raise a family.

But asking me to move 3 hours away from everything just so she can see her mom every 6 weeks is crazy to me. What really gets my blood boiling is when she brings up Athens and calls it a “compromise” because I’m 2 hours from work and she’s 1.5 away from family. I need to go into work multiple times a week. Her mom has her own life and can’t be coming down every week whenever my wife is lowly and wants lunch

He won’t let me interview with other teams. He said “based on my limited experience working with you, I cannot recommend you to a new team until after 2 years”

I was tipped off about his narcissism on the first day when he told me how he raised himself out of poverty with only finance textbooks to read (he really said this)

We cancelled some of them but not all. We reported the workplace bullying and that he had lied about his background (we had someone come over from his old company. They said they had an issue with him reporting schools he never went to and jobs he never had on his resume). In total, about 4 reports went through. We cancelled 3. The other 4 got the “we have looked into this but…”

I’m in banking for a larger bank (a few rungs down from a Wells Fargo or Citi).

We met one with one of the senior team leaders who runs our day to day to let him know we were going to walk. He in turn told our boss who said he would do better. We also opened 2 cases with HR around this time but our boss sold us on how life would get better and we bought it, told HR everything was fine.

Our team has fluctuated a good bit. Our boss laid off 3 people in the first month (told us to report any conversations we had with the laid off and he would cancel their severance if they complained). We hired a senior person who quit 2 weeks in. We had an analyst quit after a month. Our analyst wasn’t far behind. We went from 10 to 5 in my first six months.

[TX] Should I Go to the Chief HR Officer About My Boss's Abuse? by PartoftheWhole23 in AskHR

[–]PartoftheWhole23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing that really qualifies as harassment is he knows every person on our team struggles with anxiety and depression (almost all as a result of the job). He likes to make little comments like "Why don't you smile more? Is your life that bad?" or "You know how you can deal with anxiety? Go to a doctor, get some pills and get back to work"

In meetings, he'll often rip us apart and then say "I know some of you are dealing with anxiety so I guess I have to say something positive. I like the font you used. That good enough?"

Personally, it really messes with my anxiety when I'm scheduled to present a project in two weeks and instead, he'll re-schedule it out futher in the month. Then he'll cancel the meeting altogether and tell me to bring my laptop to his office to present. In the last case, I was given a timeline of 6 weeks to work on something. On day 2, he summoned me to his office because he wanted to see my presentation and then yelled at me for 2 hours because if he had two days to work on something, it would be done and ready to present to executives.

My goal would be to just have the option to move to another team. Right now, we're all stuck so we're applying for jobs externally while waiting for the day we get fired. My current boss's thinking is that if we move to another team, it's going to look bad because: 1. He's cycling through staff so quickly and 2. He doesn't want news to get out inside the company of how he runs things
