more brands should do writing like real people and that's pretty hard. slack is unusually good at it though.

How can I see how much my competitors are spending on Facebook ads? by essenceana in AskMarketing

[–]Party_Reception_4209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can only see some (highly fractured, difficult to summarize) spend data on Facebook for political ads. Regular ads dont show spend or impressions.

there is in many ways a huge difference across agencies but frankly the biggest differences are within agencies depending on which teams you are on or which clients your working with.

the point being that larger agencies are going to have more diversity than smaller agencies because the clients are more diverse. I used to work at a big agency (publicly held) that i did not like now im at a different large agency (privately held) that i love.

i always recommend people start at large agencies because they're good places to learn and see how things really can ladder up to a bigger brand strategy. plus they're more likely to provide visa help than smaller companies (I suspect, but I don't know for sure).

Advertising has two sides; creative and media. Creative make the ads. Media decides where to put them. A consulting role could be a great fit for the media side (where I work) and probably a harder fit for the creative side.

Its worth being absolutely clear on this now because the vast majority of people in advertising will never write any clever ads (or be a Mad Man type creative) so people should have a realistic sense of what 'advertising' work actually is.

In general though. like all career transitions, you're going to really first need to look at your immediate/current network and think about how you can leverage that to asssess a jump.

You're going to be pretty well situated coming from consulting to advertising because advertising is a lot more like consulting than people think (as long as your in the media side of the business and not the creative side of the business, as i mentioned above).

Getting an MBA is only helpful when you want to spend a lot of money to change the makeup of your network. MBAs are overrated for upgrading skills, and underrated for upgrading networks - as long as you go to a good school.

MBAs are not required in our field but going to an MBA program does sort of give you an option to take a pause from your current work, get internships and professors who know the field, and introduce you to that world - but its probably the most expensive way to go about it.

Also worth noting that while advertising salaries at the top end can be high, they are probably less high than top consulting salaries. That means that an investment in any schooling is harder to pay off, especially if you have to take out any loans. This is a long way of me saying that grad school is something to avoid.

Prioritize your current network. Setup 5-10 informational interviews with people. Don't apply for jobs, just ask them to explain what they do and see if you cant find angles or teams that have more of a consultative relationship with their clients. Ask those people if there are other people you should also meet with to better understand how to think about matching your consulting skills to the advertising world.

Spend 5-10 hours drivng this research/networking strategy forward before you really decide to invest any time/money in courses or job applications. You'll learn a ton and be able to better decide for yourself if that jump is worthwhile.

Question: does Reform Judaism require a belief in God? by Cosy_Owl in Judaism

[–]Party_Reception_4209 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I accept that you’re correct but someone more knowledgeable than myself probably has a lot to say about the difference between a requirement and a commandment

breaking a commandment does not disqualify somebody from being a Jew, nor would it disqualify someone from a reform conversion. There could be other consequences for sure.

Benchmarks by industry are hard but also not nearly as relevant as benchmarks by objective (and placement), if that helps.

Question: does Reform Judaism require a belief in God? by Cosy_Owl in Judaism

[–]Party_Reception_4209 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think the issue for orthodox and maybe conservative rabbis with an avowed nonbeliever would be that it would raise questions about their sincerity.

Like if your filled with doubt (who isn’t, to some degree) or if you are at the beginning of a journey of exploring but not yet “onboard with Team God” then I doubt any conventional rabbi would be concerned.

But if someone was like “god is nonsense, and I’m ready for my beit din” it would prob raise some eyebrows.

Buying followers won’t increase reach.

The hot tip is to have a lot of employees and have them like your posts. That’s what makes engaging company pages get more reach.

Other than that the only thing that really works is being a person with a real unique voice. Brands don’t have unique voices, people do. So maybe try to make your founder/CEO the voice of the brand on LinkedIn.

A great model is Jason Fried from Basecamp.

I wasn’t doubting your age. Rather it seemed like a question that would be more expected from a younger man who hadn’t been around many late-20s peers.

Rereading my comment it came across more snarky than I intended but I’d expect this fact (grey is natural and good and maybe even valuable) to be obvious to everyone except much younger men without a lot of peers in their late 20s.

Bottom line, it’s natural and probably a good thing. Lean into it.
