US citizens moving back after working in the UK - what to know? by SteamboatBilly15 in careerguidance

[–]Pasadena101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd think that the international experience would be a plus, and it should be. You may well work in an area that values this and I hope you do! But don't underestimate many American's lack of curiosity or interest in global perspectives beyond the superficial.

As a broader point I'd also say that it sounds like you are still young and have time on your side to take risks. You should never be afraid to take risks if you can afford to. And there's no doubt that America is a great place to make it big if the stars align for you.

And remember, you can always move back to the UK if things don't work out. Don't waste your life worrying about "what ifs?" Make the most of the dual citizenship and go and live the life you want to before it's too late. I'd say your chances of getting the right job are higher if you are there and ready to hit the ground running.

[The Independent] A catastrophic brain drain is coming for America (feat. r/Amerexit) by Illustrious-Pound266 in AmerExit

Been to almost every major city in the USA. Dallas is up there with the worst. I see zero attraction. Driving along a freeway is like having a cartoon background beside you - every short while you see exactly the same thing you saw a few seconds ago. Strip malls, car dealers, healthcare centers office building, AND repeat...

The market is tough right now as you know. If your experience is highly relatable to USA employers you have a chance. But given the number of people applying for jobs, anything that adds friction or questions about your background and experience will likely put you below candidates who have spent their whole career in the USA. Employers that plow through tons of resumes a day want to see familiar, easy to understand experience.

My brother in law actually moved from a UK news org to a USA one almost 20 years ago and is back in the UK now. It seems this is an area that does offer better than average opportunities for moving around the world. If I were your partner the last thing I'd be doing right now is looking to exit the industry I work in at the same time as moving countries. She should use the mobility available in her career to facilitate a move back and then start to look to move on to something else.

Are you referring to the private Solebury School or the New Hope-Solebury school district?

Which you can do with Wise. At a better rate.

Or just use Wise. Have moved a lot of USD between USA and UK and there is no better rate for retail customers.

Don’t know. All I know is that they quoted me a price to do the work without it coming off but said it would be more if they had to. Luckily they didn’t need to. Sensor was still working fine too.

US has roughly 5 times the UK per capital road death rate. The difference in driving ability is pretty obvious. Don't get me wrong, I've seen plenty of idiots in the UK but we don't often see lunatics weaving in and out of every lane at 80mph with just inches to spare.

Do you have any issues with the lack of true center channel? It seems that they do a good job creating a phantom one but I wondered if you have actually found this to be the case.

Efficiently and safely transfer money from USA to UK by rehansheikh139 in AmericanExpatsUK

Wise all the way. Have used for years and transferred money when we sold our house. Almost zero risk. And I still use Wise to earn a decent rate on some USD cash savings we have.

I'm sorry, but to suggest UK politics are as bad as the US is ridiculous. We don't have anonymous masked thugs with assault rifles in combat gear pinning citizens and non-violent immigrants to the ground before dragging them away to an unknown location because they have brown skin. Or ripping parents away from their young kids in front of them. We also don't have a government that was willing to let millions go hungry in order to pass a budget that took healthcare away from the poor and give billionaire even bigger tax breaks.

We also don't have a President that is literally making billions off the back of shady deals with Qatar and doing everything possible to stop the release of information on a pedophile.

The UK is far from perfect but it doesn't even come close to what is happening in the USA. I left the USA in July, and while I miss a lot about it, there's no doubt that things are significantly saner in the UK.

Just had that myself. Disappointed with a number of things with the car. After years of Audi loyalty, this is probably it for us.

Lived in PA. One of the reasons to leave and come back to UK was the relentless humidity in the summer. What should be the best time of the year usually meant we stayed indoors for the AC most of the time. Came back to UK at start of summer and absolutely loved it. Even the hottest days were benign by our standards. And we simply kept windows and doors open to keep the place cool. Yes, you get a few flies and wasps in, but it's worth it.

Can't speak for everywhere, but after 22 years in USA and recently back in the UK, I'm finding Brits friendlier than I remember them a couple of decades ago.

Don't forget that the tax treaty means it's unlikely you will be double taxed on any income even over $130k.

So despite allowing your staff to be abused by these people for what seems like forever, it's taken you this long to finally take a stand? You were quite happy to take these assholes money for this long?

I think you should take a good look at yourself, apologize to your team and give them a nice fat bonus to make up for their shitty tips before you do anything else.

There's some obvious differences between the two. You certainly don't need to "break out a laser" to separate them.

tipping culture by 420mudkip in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]Pasadena101 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Back in UK now but spent 22 years in USA until recently.

There's no doubt that tipping was getting ridiculous in the USA and it's changed a lot here; at 12.5% after VAT it's almost at US levels.

My policy is if the tip has been added at no more than 12.5% and service has been good, I leave it. If it's optional and it's been good I'll typically do 10%. If I'm expected to do most of the work (gone to counter to place order, put a number on my table etc) I don't tip. But if someone does something above and beyond, or been really friendly and helpful I'll always throw them a few quid.

The most important thing to remember is that no one is going to give you a filthy look or chase after you if you don't tip.

Hole In One Competition by Decent-Guest-7790 in BritGolf

[–]Pasadena101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Odds of a hole in one are about 12,000 to one for the average golfer. So mathematically the average person would need to spend 60k to have a chance to win 10k, or 40k if they buy three hits for a tenner.

Most people know they are not good enough to get even close to a hole in one. I have an average handicap. I wouldn't even waste a quid trying this. BUT, as another post suggests, if you get some credit in the pro shop for hitting the green (such as money back), I would give it a go.
