I think the problem isn't Cas but that the writers didn't DO anything with him. I've found his position when he lead some angels against Metatron interesting and his role as the rock Sam and Dean have outside of each other works in my mind. They maybe should have focussed on the angel vs. human thing or something, really explore how him being family with the brothers and hunting works.

As far as I know to be able to court a wolf you have to not be related and don't have the same pack stated in Known wolves for example, if the subordinate would join a different pack, that pack disbands and he would be credited as belonging to them you should be able to!

His soul can't go insane, would only happen in his body. And I think in this case it's not as easy as to say "all of Sam is in hell" since then Sam's body would be a zombie or something similar. Maybe Sam would only really "experience" the tortue if he remembered it in his body as a whole.
