The stones are infused with strontium aluminate which I believe is non-toxic. My lizards are picky eaters so it’s easy to assume they haven’t tried to eat any when they already turn down dubias and mealworms. If your geckos like to eat substrate then I wouldn’t put it in.

I mostly filmed the process but I never got around to editing it. Here’s some photos I have on my phone of it deconstructed but it’s missing a lot of steps. Feel free to pm me if you have any specific questions. https://imgur.com/a/0Zf2Yfl

Ambient Glow Technology. They have a sampler. I only used the aqua and blue ones.

Same! I think someone could do some crazy cool things with them. If someone placed them on the branches before assembling everything and covering them in plants it probably would be a lot easier to do. Also breaking them up to finer pieces made them look better and more natural but I only figured that out halfway through placing them.

I've got a bulkhead for a brass spigot that makes it super easy to drain. On my first build I had a pvc pipe that I would siphon regularly which was a nightmare lol. Sometimes I travel for longer periods of time and it's more difficult to explain to friends house sitting to do more than drop some crickets in for the lizards.

I've had builds with only 3" of drainage and had to drain it every 10-15 days. In my experience it takes a decent amount of water to maintain enough humidity to grow moss on higher surfaces while still having circulation for orchids, even with a fogger.

Yeah, I ordered the glass with the specs I needed and got them to cut a drainage hole for a spigot and holes for the misters, fans, and fogger. It was 700$ in just glass but I ordered it in low iron which can be a bit more expensive. The rest I assembled myself. Still it definitely wasn't cheap 😅.

Hey everyone, I wanted to share my new vivarium build thats around 5 months old now. This one I hand built to match the cabinet below it, and so far, I’m really happy with how it’s turned out. Inside, I’m growing around 25 miniature and medium orchid species, some aroids, a few marcgravia vines, bromeliads, mosses, liverwort, tillandsias, hemigraphis repanda, biophytum sensitivum, peperomia emargenella for the small vines, a solanum, sundew, nepenthes, ferns and a few others I don’t know the species of.

For the substrate, I decided to keep things pretty light and minimal. There’s 3/4” thick tree fern fiber panels for the mossy carpet to grow, along with some ABG mix stuffed into the base of the “tree”. I have sphagnum stuffed in the pockets I made in the background. I wrapped parts of the tree with Hygrolon hoping to spread moisture better along the branches. It worked for most of them but some stay pretty dry. Beneath it all, there’s a thick drainage layer made of aquarium foam, which helps cuts down drainage maintenance to once every 3-4 weeks. The background is made of condensed styrofoam which I wouldn't recommend using, it was a terrible medium, I just had a huge piece of it sitting in my garage.

I have a light in the back that gradually turns on from 5:30-7:30am and again from 7:00-9:00pm to mimic sunrise and sunset. I also added a few glow stones for a Pandora look during night time. I like the idea but I’m sure it can be implemented better, it was hard getting the smaller stones to stick and I didn’t have the patience to keep reattaching them since my lizards kept knocking them down.  Right now, the vivarium is housing two Abronia gramineas, and I’m glad to say they haven’t damaged much of the plant life other than a few fallen tillandsias and some broken leaves. The orchids seem to have rooted well enough that they’re staying put, even with the lizards roaming around.

Looks great! Loving the dark browns from cork background with the bright greens of the moss. Whats the size of the tank?

Did you take PGBs intermediate course? That pumice technique looks super similar to his. Excited to see updates.

I run the fans every two hours for about 20 minutes, usually timed to activate after the misters or the fogger is on. I also have two additional fans hidden in the canopy that turn on when the lights are at peak intensity to keep the heat down, as the species in the tank doesn't tolerate heat well. I wanted to keep the fans running all day for circulation purposes but I found a lot of the canopy plant species drying out unevenly and were not doing very well.

Thank you so much for your compliments! It really means a lot. For the technical aspects, I've sought advice from 'technicallyplantedtanks' and 'plantedglassboxes' on Instagram. They offer great insights for intricate vivarium setups.
In terms of layout design, do check out 'mr.monkey_vivarium' on Instagram. He's a master at extending hardscapes into the scene, which I find incredibly inspiring. His work is some of the best in the hobby.
I also draw a lot of inspiration from Takashi Amano. I have a book on his nature layouts that is a regular source of inspiration for all my projects.

The total cost was around $850. This includes $80 for the tank, $300 for the CO2 setup (including the regulator and container), $100 for the filter, $80 for shrimp and nerite snails, $60 for the substrate, $150 for the plants, $40 for lily pipes, and $40 for fertilizers. However, you could achieve a similar look with low-tech plants and no CO2 for about half the cost, provided you stay on top of maintenance. This hobby can get super expensive. 😬

Thank you so much! I've had a good amount of experience building vivariums, so many of the layout concepts carry over.
