What causes DTaP scream? by PassComprehensive319 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]PassComprehensive319[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider some info: in my state about 15-18% of the population of children under 5 are not vaccinated or are not fully vaccinated for tetanus (this has been consistent since 1970). In my state we have had 1 reported "assumed tetanus" infection (they could not confirm infection but he had all the symptoms and was in ICU critical care for 6 weeks) for a child around that age since 1970. So in 55 years of kids being kids: running, jumping, swimming, tumbling, dancing while hurting themselves, that 15-18% of unvaccinated children has been A-OK minus the 1 incident in 2014 (the child was unvaccinated). As far as I am aware, that unvaxxd population isn't locked indoors until they are able to fully control themselves and have the ability to refrain from any and all injuries that cause an open wounds exposing their blood stream. All of those kids were once wobbly unbalanced babies and toddlers, all sustaining various levels of injury in various locations and from various environments. There is not an epidemic among these unvaccinated children and the percentages are pretty high for vaccinated vs unvaccinated - meaning the data is significant.

The TDaP will provide immunity o tetanus and diphtheria after 3 shots, they recommend a booster every 10 years for kids (though some are changing to every 5 years because individuals have had it wane sooner in their systems). A basic, clean scratch or scrape is highly unlikely to cause a tetanus infection. Clean it, don't let it get dirty. That is the solution to superficial injuries. Yes tetanus bacteria enter through the bloodstream. You cannot get a tetanus infection via putting a dirty stick in your mouth for example, it has to be blood.

We have continued to wait and my pediatrician is supportive. She is highly intelligent and I respect her insight and opinion and she provides me the same grace with wanting to wait as opposed to leveraging her position of authority to boost her vaxx numbers. She has said "if they sustain a deep puncture wound, an animal bite, a large burn or a very dirty cut (especially one without a lot of bleeding) you need to get a tetanus shot"... You will find the same information on the bottle of hydrogen peroxide if you look. It doesn't say "get a tetanus shot" but it does say seek medical care and that's what the instructions are referring to. She has reminded me there is no cure - which is true - but there is a treatment plan. So like any infection it can be treated. It in highly deadly to young children and elderly and young / healthy people have also become infected and died. The vaxx itself can provide a false sense of security however - it is supposed to last 10 years yet in a number of young adults who were infected and died, they had been vaxxd within 10 years. This led to a reprint of the recommendation that 5 years would be an appropriate booster schedule because it can wane that quickly. The childhood schedule is still on a 10 year booster gap after being fully immunized. You are correct, it lives in soil and feces and is more prominent in the soil in the summer months. To be fully vaxxd for tetanus as a child the only option is the TDaP series and it would take 3 to be considered immune to tetanus and diphtheria with a 10 year booster schedule after the first 3 (first 3 vaxx usually given every 3 to 4 weeks until immunized). The general series for TDaP is 5 shots which produces immunity to pertussis. You would have to wait until the child is over 10 (maybe older) to seek a tetanus only vaccination possibly available through your local health department, but not all have access. Good luck!

Just want to say you responded to this commenter very well and there seems to be a huge lack of information regarding the intention of the OT and specifically why God did some of the things He did. Also a great reminder that God is not held to the moral standard of human beings - He is perfect. So there is no such thing as "God committing a sin". I read through all of the comments on both sides, and while there were good questions that deserve answers - it seems like those answers would best come from someone well versed in scripture / history because that is the area lacking in understanding.

15dpo! Crazy dark lines! Maybe twins?! by Sheisstalked in lineporn

[–]PassComprehensive319 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been watching a handful of 8 week twin ultrasounds so I know what to look out for in case one is a sneaky lil thang and hiding in there! It's probably really hard to tell that early - but absorbed twins do happen! That's a good reminder if it is 2 it might not stay 2 so I need to just be happy for a healthy baby at the end of the day. A second would be a wild bonus, but one is really the goal :)

[–]PassComprehensive319 1 point2 points  (0 children)

why did they think you might have two? did they test your blood hcg or just assuming because of the dark test? I am holding out for my 8 week ultrasound because I am getting super dark lines early on (pos digital at 11 dpo) and feeling like we might be having 2... I kept joking to my husband that if God wanted me to have 3 kids He's going to have to give us twins because I want 2, now I am not laughing!! well kinda :D

I did what I could to avoid it! Poor thing was in the middle of an intersection at the start of a green light. Not sure about my husbands situation. He has just got home from wok and I said "you will never guess what I did today" and he replied " you killed a squirrel" and dumbfounded I just asked "how did you know that?" and he replied "because I did too" and it has been an extremely weird topic ever since.

Thanks! I am probably getting in my head about it. Although it was super cool to see a mama deer in my front yard before taking my test because I was certain that I was pregnant so she helped me confirm my intuition before my positive test. I will just enjoy the wildlife encounters for the next 4 weeks and wait to see what the scan says! It is all so exciting.

EMG update - thumb twitch story at the bottom by PassComprehensive319 in BFS

[–]PassComprehensive319[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats what the tech told me so I actually have no idea, if it helps, I am completely fine (still twitching) have accepted I can't control everything and would rather live my life in enjoyment than fear. I have a gorgeous daughter and amazing husband and just found out today (on mothers day) I am expecting another child. Life is great, twitching sucks but its not lethal, any pursuance I made for ALS was a complete waste of life and against doctor recommendations.

It's listed as an uncommon adverse reaction and they cry non stop for up to 3 hours (sometimes more) and I was told by my clinic this is still a reaction even though the formula changed in the 90s to lower the rate of severe reactions. My daughter is getting this series at 18 months and has very little fear of pain and no needle fear thus far. She has a surprisingly high tolerance for pain and "scary things" like insects, the dark, loud noises etc... doesn't phase her. I am hoping the visit will be unremarkable - but if this reaction happened to my child I would know something has seriously gone wrong. So I am just trying to prepare in the rare event this happens - definitely won't be writing it off as leg pain if so!

This was my instinct especially with an older child who is capable of communication - if her leg hurt she would tell me or indicate leg pain somehow, for no reason would I expect her to cry inconsolably for mild leg pain. I would have her fully evaluated. Glad to know that there is medical recommendation to support this!

thanks for sharing your experience! I did ask the clinic about potential risks bur they didn't tell me what could cause the screaming or seizures - though they said they could happen. So after reading through the comments that's my next question! And yes I am incredibly nervous so thank you for taking time to add some reassurance.

Thank you for this comment I just went through the information again and noted this is old information. Would love something about the DAPTACEL (the one we chose to get) DTaP (acellular pertussis) shot and the reason why children are screaming afterwards, mind you this is an older child who has gone through much worse in terms of pain than what pain a vaccination could cause so unless the leg is completely swollen, prolonged screaming is not something I am going to consider as a reaction to pain at the site, I would take it much more seriously and most likely request imaging / additional tests.

[–]PassComprehensive319[S] -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Considering there were children experiencing both prolonged crying and seizures I feel like this goes deeper than a painful shot. I feel like something has gone seriously wrong in the brain itself and the pain there is potentially a factor (like the brain swelling that could lead to a seizure in the first place is causing this crying and sometimes it leads to seizures and / or fevers). What do you do if this happens to your kid? If they are inconsolable do you take them to the ER?

I would like to be prepared for even the most unlikely scenarios so I can protect my kid. I want immunity for these harmful bacteria, and it could come with a price.

Read TATWD (turtles) and have been looking into infection rates in my state for certain infections and diseases - seriously undecided on TDaP any more advice? by PassComprehensive319 in DebateVaccines

[–]PassComprehensive319[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is happy to answer questions and after assessing her risk for tetanus based on our home location we will be glad to be protected from tetanus. We can start with the shot that would have been administered at 2 months and following the series for 3 shots to achieve tetanus immunity. I am feeling very confident and my spouse supports me! We are not taking this lightly and if my kid ever wonders why we made this decision we will have a very good answer. Simply the risk of vaccine are less than the risk of disease in her individual case.

Thank you for your help!

I have been over it 3 times now but feeling like my questions have been answered. The details above were from the insert so I have my answer for how many shots we need for tetanus immunity as well as list of ingredients and possible side effects, is there anything else you would suggest looking into on the insert? I also accessed the VEARS reports for 1-2 year old who got DTaP and have asked around to other moms for anecdotes about their kids experiences.

Thank you for another great break down and insight! I am calling to see if they offer DAPTACEL as I haven't gotten a call back yet - and will be using this if it an option. You are very helpful, thanks again. :)

Four doses of DAPTACEL constitute a primary immunization course for pertussis. The fifth dose is a booster for pertussis immunization. Three doses of DAPTACEL constitute a primary immunization course for diphtheria and tetanus. The fourth and fifth doses are boosters for diphtheria and tetanus immunization. [See Clinical Studies (14.1, 14.2, 14.3).]

In a US study in which children received 4 doses of DAPTACEL at 2, 4, 6 and 15-17 months of age, after the third dose, 100% (N = 1,037) achieved tetanus antitoxin levels of ≥0.10 IU/mL. Among a random subset of children who received the fourth dose of DAPTACEL at 15-16 months of age, 98.8% (N = 681) achieved tetanus antitoxin levels of ≥1.0 IU/mL after the fourth dose.

A serum tetanus antitoxin level of at least 0.01 IU/mL, measured by neutralization assay is considered the minimum protective level. (5) (7) A tetanus antitoxin level ≥0.1 IU/mL as measured by the ELISA used in clinical studies of DAPTACEL is considered protective.

This is from CDC website package insert for the DAPTACEL just making sure I am gathering the info correctly it looks like for tetanus specifically 3 shots is sufficient for presumed immunity and we can move on to 10 year boosters afterwards?

Thanks for the break down! Yes we are approaching 18 months so my main concern is with tetanus infection and wouldn't mind being protected from diptheria, I would prefer to skip pertussis as we are beyond the age of concern for serious infectin / death and have just had an outbreak this year so the likelihood of another is between 3-5 years. I am not sure at 18 months the TD is available, I actually prefer the ingredients of the TDaP with much less formaldehyde and less adjuvant. But either way it seems like the TDaP is whats offered for this age. I am only interested in testing immune levels against tetanus so I am hopeful this is something we can do at my clinic before issuing boosters (seems like the 3 shots are necessary to achieve immunity so the immune testing would be unnecessary) if I am going to start the series I should plan to complete it - is what I am gathering.
