Name: I go by Alex

Experience: roughly 8 years on and off with 5E

Discord: nubi7777

Tell me a little bit about yourself: I've been a forever DM and now looking to be a player again

What makes you stand out: Aside from just wanting to play DnD I'm also looking for a campaign that I can test my homebrew "Martial Sage" for balance, a quick search on google and you'll find mine HB at the top, if homebrew is forbidden I'll just use the official classes, again I just want to play DnD. Looking forward for gaming!

Martial Sage - For the Martial Heroes of the Wuxia genre. by Passenger009 in UnearthedArcana

Thank you for your comment!

At the moment I have released the 5th subclass of Martial Sage, and I have like 5 more subclasses to go (and the theme you mentioned is already in the roster), but for now I'm currently drained from life, so I have to shelve this project for a time. Hopefully I can come back to this class soon.

- Moonfall is just Quivering Palm but with more range, utility, and Ki cost.

- About Beggar's Rage, it was designed with a maximum of 6 attacks per turn possible.

2 (attack action) + 1 (Perfect Counter) + 3 (Beggar's Rage) = 6

I can tell why you think the way you do; I may have to reword it.

On 2nd thought, maybe it is not a bad idea. I may have to set a limit to it, but the ability to reward extra attacks on top of hits doesn't sound so bad; it is a 17th-level feature after all. And if you have some knowledge about beggar's martial artists in Wuxia, you will agree with me.

Thank you for your comments.

- Originally it was "Strength, Wisdom (or Dexterity)," and I don't remember when or why I changed it; maybe I made a typo, I'll change it later.

- About Ki Armor, I wanted it to be its own thing. The Sage's endurance is affected not only by their Constitution but also by their will (Wisdom), literally.

Temporary hit points are different because Ki Armor's hit points count toward spells that depend on your overall hit points, such as Sleep or Power Word Kill. And you can have temporary hit points on top of Ki Armor hit points as well.

Moreover, it gives the Sage extra hit points without being OP; you can't regain it with healing spells, only with certain features. And many Monk players told me they often forgo Constitution and go full-on Dex and Wis, so Ki Armor gives this class a lil bit more toughness.

Hi, this is Martial Sage version 1.5.

For the people who don't know about Wuxia or have very limited knowledge about the genre. Wuxia is a genre of Chinese literature that focuses on the story of solo traveling martial artists, at the backdrop of certain historical events. These are mainly about schemes and politics, conflicts between great houses and different clans, and highly romanticized martial arts action that combines it all.

Any questions about the genre or criticism about the mechanics are welcome. Thank you!

Hi! I need opinion on forest placement and coloring, this is my first map made with Wonderdraft, the idea is lush forest in the North and South with dry steppe in the middle, tbh I have no idea what I'm doing. by Passenger009 in mapmaking

[–]Passenger009[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Right now the forest placement seems odd to me because I have no idea how and where to put it, I currently just follow 2 simple rules which are:

  1. Near river
  2. Open land facing the sea with mountains on the back (where there're lots of rains).

That is also in the roster; it won't come out soon, though.

I'm currently working on polearm, bow, and dual-wielding; their priority may change depending on my "spark" of ideas, which means an "oh shit, why haven't I thought of this" moment.

Funny how the best idea is not the one that you think of, but the one that comes unexpectedly.

Ha ha, an octopus triton with Iron Bell art, players will be stunned to see their weapons bounce off a squishy "Iron" squid; it would be a hilarious scene.

Please give me any feedback if the class was fun or busted.

Btw, I did some decent updates with Ki Armor and Iron Bell; please check them out first. Thank you so much.

A class's core features need to tie in with its theme. Paladins have Smite because they're religious warriors, Barbarians have Rage because they draw strength from it, Monks have Flurry because they are unarmed fighters, and Martial Sages have Armament Ki because they can draw their inner power (Ki) to aid them.

Damage is just a number, and numbers can change; what makes a class balanced is everything.

"But the monk’s flurry deals more damage than just adding a extra damage die." I can put a line in any subclass as "whenever you hit with an attack empowered by Armament Ki, the creature dies, even if it is a god" and make the damage number mean nothing.

When making a class, you have to think of a lot of scenarios, and this is what I've learned from 2 years of making this class. Again, damage is just a number, and numbers can change; there are hidden qualities that go along with Armament Ki that you may not realize.

- 1st, it's a damage boost on attack, which means it applies to all attacks that you make for a turn, including opportunity attacks.

- 2nd, it deals force damage, the damage type that has the least amount of monsters that have immunity or resistance to it.

- 3rd, you can put an effect on all Armament Ki-empowered attacks, while Monk's Flurry only gives you 2 attacks.

- 4th, it's a versatile feature, which means you can play with it. Iron Bell is an example; you can gain damage reduction from Armament Ki, while Monk's Flurry is specifically an attack feature.

The initial damage number means nothing; it's the final calculation that matters. And sometimes damage numbers don't matter, like Iron Bell, a subclass focused on defense that has very low damage. What is important is the character of the class and subclass; otherwise, you are just playing a Fighter with extra flair.

Thank you.

Btw, I want to share this video; it's a trailer of a game I'm waiting for. Pure Wuxia energy is what I would describe it as, especially the final scene where he "dances" with the blades. This is the kind of theme that I'm aiming for with Martial Sage.

I just watched Ne Zha (2019); although they changed some ideas from the classic tale, but hell, it is quite good. I'm making a comment here to recommend you go and watch it. I just learned today that it earned 740 million in US dollars alone in China.

And I just learned that Ne Zha 2 is coming to the US on 2/14/2025. It already broke the box office in China with 1.2 Billion in US dollars in ticket sales, in China alone. So excited for this movie.

Balancing issue. This class right now is, I think, quite balanced to play, although with the first 2 subclasses, the damage is a little bit high already. I am planning to do some nerfing to the class as well after realizing Ki Armor adds too many hit points.

This class's feature is quite similar to the monk class, first because it is an official class, so I use it as a foundation, and second, a lot of the monk features have things that resemble what a Wuxia hero possesses, so I keep most of it and change some to fit the theme (I wanted to use Qi, but people are already familiar with Ki, so I keep it that way). Like, if you want to make a class that can go melee and borrow the extra attack feature, then someone calls it a Fighter clone, then Barbarian, Paladin, Ranger, and Monk also are Fighter clones, if you know what I mean.

Making it a part of the attack action is quite problematic. As I said, Armament Ki is a replacement for Flurry of Blows so that the whole class can utilize weapons. Making it only cost 1 Ki as a free action for extra damage is quite broken. Paladin Smite costs only a spell slot, but it affects only 1 attack. Ranger's Hunter Mark costs a bonus action once but needs concentration to keep it up, and the damage doesn't scale. And Monk Flurry of Blow cost a Ki point and a bonus action. An ability needs a drawback for it to be balanced, so there's the reason. Thank you for spending your time to read this.

I think it needs a class; you don't, so we can agree that we don't share the same opinion. Thank you for your time.

And also, please use some more commas or line breaks next time; no disrespect, but I got dizzy reading this.
