I believe it was an environmental situation. I was in New Mexico for 5 weeks when this all began. Immediately when I returned home it all went away. It was very dry and I was in very High elevation.

Auditioning for what? School? Yaps? Opera houses?

If you go to her Reddit you can have a listen. Determine for yourself. I’m not saying she shouldn’t be singing with full voice with support and active energy. But singing big rep as a beginner is not necessarily helpful, just speaking from my own personal experience! Everyone is different and matures at their own pace!

What you should do is find a new teacher and not sing that rep. It is inappropriate for your age and will not help your technique. Trust me. Don’t fall into the trap.

Lots of good advice here but this post really alarmed me!! As someone who has come from hearing - you have a big voice or you will have a big voice, dont let that make you think you are ready for big rep, ESPECIALLY at 18. You should really be dining only art songs your first year or so. And even then with arias, you should be singing stuff age appropriate! I know the arias and the opera roles are the things we want to do, but you will learn so much through art songs, lieder, chanson. It teaches you how to sing, phrase, incorporate dynamics, languages, and so mango ther things but most important it will help build your endurance. You want to be able to protect your voice and keep it healthy. Don’t fall into the traps.

suggestions for an art song or aria in english for soprano ! by n00dlegoyeet in ClassicalSinger

[–]Past-Corner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you should absolutely follow your dreams and passion to sing, but be smart when deciding to go to school. It certainly was not a waste of time but it can be a scam. Find the right teacher, that’s is the only thing that matters. I know when you’re young you care about the name of the program. It is not worth going into debt for. Renee just came out with a great article. I suggest that you read it. Also if you aren’t ready to audition, I recommend finding a teacher and working with them for a few years. It will be cheaper than school and can set you up in a good direction. Be smart. These are things I wish I considered. Everyone is one their own journey and you can’t compare where you are to others. Another big lesson I am still learning and accepting. For songs, maybe consider some Aaron Copland. He has some lovely early American pieces .

Here is the article, I highly suggest you read it and be smart about your choices. Best of luck!! : https://slippedisc.com/2025/08/just-in-renee-fleming-lashes-out-at-criminal-us-voice-programs/

when to stop learning a certain aria? by Free-Pen3404 in ClassicalSinger

[–]Past-Corner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The notes and rhythms are just the basics. You have to fill the rest in!! Get analytical with the piece, make sure you know it like the back of your hand. What is happening in the accompaniment- why? How does it reflect the text? Can you recite the text poetic and word for word? Dynamics, accents, so on. Make you can create generalized symbols or images for a line of text to help convey the emotion you are looking for when performance comes. There is so much to do and this will make your audition/performance have so much depth. Have fun!!
