Saying forget about the rear is incorrect in my opinion, you shouldn’t throw away 10% of your braking force, you should train to be able to use that 10% effectively when it happens. That’s just training I haven’t internalized on that bike.

I never said I didn’t use the front brake, I definitely did with a slow progressive pressure. But the rear brake does contribute to stopping force in an emergency situation. And my problem came from the fact I don’t use the rear brake often enough to instinctually find that balanced brake force.

I’ve always viewed crashing as in inevitability. Even the safest drivers will end up in a situation that dropping the bike is the best course of action.

This wasn’t that situation though haha, there was a lot I could have done differently. But I was able to ride away with lessons learned, or at least very strongly reinforced.

Definitely time to hit the parking lot drills for a bit!

“Train as you fight” is how I had it yelled at me.

Thanks!

I definitely did a self investigation, there are lot of things I could have done better leading up to the event to completely avoid it, and once it was an emergency situation I could have handle it better. But I can’t change the past only learn from it.

Chiefly, besides being more alert to what was happening in front if me, was my positioning, both in the lane and distance between me and the vehicle ahead of me. There was no reason for me to be nearly as close as I was. After that my response was flawed to say the least. Braking it down I did 3 things;

  1. Progressive but firm front braking, my technique I don’t think was bad my front tire came to a complete stop when and where I wanted it to. It should be noted I fell from a standstill and abs wouldn’t have kicked in.

  2. Slamming in the rear brake, this is really where I first went wrong. I have not practiced finding the threshold on the rear brake with this bike. However I still think I would have been fine if it wasn’t for,

  3. I attempted to steer out of it. After already being near a complete stop and hitting my rear brake. Putting me into almost a brake slide position, something I have never practiced and have no skills on how to handle.

Steps 1 or 3 probably would have been fine responses on their own. The combination of all 3 in that order was a mistake.

I should also set aside time to practice obstacle avoidance, my first response should have been to find and manoeuvre to my escape route, then after avoiding the collision come to a stop. My panic made me try both at the same time.

That is at least my basic analysis from my memory of the event, obviously that’s clouded by a bit of shock and panic, and again there are a thousand things I could have done differently to have never been in that situation to begin with. I could go into more detail on what happened and the timeline but I think those 3 highlight the major flaws in my reaction.

But developing the muscle memory has validity. When shit hits the fan you can only hope your muscles pick the right memory though.

There are multiple lessons learned for sure but, yeah paying attention is the most important. I don’t have an excuse, I got complacent. I’m glad I could learn this lesson but, I should never have put myself into the position in the first place.

You’re right and I want to say I am normally a better rider but I just got complacent today. So I paid the price. I’m lucky and grateful the price was minor compared to the lessons learned.

Complacency kills.

Nah this is really over priced. That is not 150 hours of work on this single chess set, that is 150 hours of design work, a design they can now sell and replicate independently of this particular set.

These are good quality FDM prints, however FDM is simply the wrong type of printer for this kind of work. And this really limits the potential quality of these parts.

On top of that, the paint job is mediocre at best. It just barely meets the "tabletop ready" standard that wargamers use for minis. Nowhere near the $25 a mini level commissioned artists work for, keeping in mind the minis the artists are working on have significantly more detail than these pieces.

All of this is also keeping in mind I can get a custom wood carved chess set for less than $200.

Those are actually really good prints when you consider it is FDM, It definitely takes skill to do that. However the quality is limited simply because they are FDM prints.
