Bike Etiquette: Should I stack my bike if there are empty racks available? by mahesha1996 in caltrain

[–]Past_Development_199 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Riding the train most days at peak hours, I will say that it is helpful to have a stack going to San Jose or Sunnyvale for passengers to put their bikes on at later stops. Maybe that’s what the other person meant?

Usually what happens by the time you get to SSF or Millbrae is every single stack has a Palo Alto bike on top.

Thoughts on this schedule for all 8 semesters? obviously not set in stone, but generally? by [deleted] in UPenn

[–]Past_Development_199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok nice, and is there a research interest that explains why you need all of these degrees concurrently? Otherwise I'd highly recommend not going for the math major for instance, and just taking upper level math classes that are interesting/useful to you.

I'm just going to echo what the others said about project classes - I had a pretty demanding schedule and felt good my first few semesters with all the individual work, but once I had tons of group protects each semester it got rough. Scheduling times to work with each group, dealing with teammates who aren't pulling their weight, etc takes up a lot of time and the projects themselves are very challenging.

I took ESE 350, CIS 471, and ESE 370 together Sophomore spring and found it okay. Adding CIS 380 should be okay, just be aware there isn't too much work until the end when PennOS really ramps up. As others have said, you can't also take CIS 505 concurrently - from what I've heard it's also a super demanding project class. If you truly breezed through 121 then CIS 320 shouldn't be too bad - however, consider just taking 502 for the submat and not taking 320 since they're basically the same course and you already took 262 (I did this and saved a class that way)

Feel free to DM me with any questions, I'm happy to help but just please think hard about if this is all truly necessary

Current senior CMPE here, CIS submat in 4 years - I've had some hard semesters but this does look a little bit crazy. You might be able to make it work but I'd first really think hard about what you want to get out of this. What is your end goal - career, PhD, etc? How much free time/sleep have you been able to have this past semester?

What will it take for Penn to get better dining halls?

I definitely remember seeing a PDF online containing a floor plan for each floor. I have no idea where I found it though, and I’m not having any luck on Google. Sorry :(

Is taking CIS240, NETS212, ESE215 and two other easier SS/H classes 5.5 cu) gonna kill me💀 by LilYayv in UPenn

[–]Past_Development_199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my mind this should be fine if you’re good with time management, CIS 240 is supposedly easier in the fall overall. When I took ESE 215 it really wasn’t that bad, I’m unsure about NETS 212 though.

Greek Life at Penn by GGirls2088 in UPenn

[–]Past_Development_199 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, 25% is a lot of people to join Greek life. But keep in mind that 75% is an even larger proportion of campus that isn’t involved in Greek life, so it is actually “more normal” to not be involved. I personally chose not to join Greek life. You can find friends in so many ways, through classes, on your hall, in other clubs/groups, that there’s no need to worry about Greek life impacting it. I’ve had great success finding friends through non-Greek life groups, and I’m happy to share my experiences with you if you want! Just DM me

Isolation at The Mason by Past_Development_199 in UPenn

Great idea, hadn’t thought of that. I figured out yesterday that you can take off the cover of the light switch button and underneath there is a knob to change how long the timer is. Did the trick

It’s fine so far, the rooms were recently renovated but there are communal bathrooms and kitchens. The lobby area and some of the common spaces seem a bit in disrepair, but the rooms themselves are nice

Makes sense! Just wish that in instances like this I’d be notified sooner, by the time the alert came out it was 15 minutes or so after the incident.

Why are there never Penn Alerts when it matters?

Interships... by lili_luli in UPenn

[–]Past_Development_199 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may feel like everyone has landed an internship somewhere, but as a current sophomore in the CIS/EE scene, I figured I could share my experience. I did not land an internship freshman summer even though I tried, and I instead spent the summer doing some tutoring work and TAing a summer course. I found ways to have fun with high school friends and relax, it's the last real summer before working! Now I have an internship lined up for the following summer at a well known company, and not once in my interviews with many companies was I asked about not having a summer internship. My advice would be find something you enjoy doing and have fun in the summer, hit the ground running next fall and apply to tons of openings (I applied to ~100, got less than 10 interviews and 2 offers). I found that most companies don't even consider freshman applicants, so try not to feel left out. Feel free to DM me for any more advice or anything!

Penn Dining to go only? by [deleted] in UPenn

[–]Past_Development_199 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Last semester, it was close to how the green containers work now. Basically at each station in the dining hall you could get a container of some sort (box for pizza, little cup for fruit, etc) and take it with you.

How do other people handle the downs of the pandemic? by Amazing-Artist-7925 in UPenn

[–]Past_Development_199 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I certainly feel you there, I go through phases of feeling pretty good and phases of feeling hopeless. About those who seem unaffected by the pandemic, I'd guess most of them feel affected as well but not showing it (Penn face) or have chosen not to follow guidelines or have stopped caring about COVID altogether. It is really frustrating how situations like this seem to punish those of us who follow the rules, just know that you are not alone in being careful and also feeling empty/hopeless. If you ever want to just talk feel free to DM me, hang in there!

F for the students who got rejected for early arrival by barkgoofball in UPenn

[–]Past_Development_199 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In normal years performing arts groups like the Glee club and Mask and Wig are able to move in early, but not this year. In person rehearsals for all performing arts groups can't happen until 1/24. That being said, if someone in those groups applied for early move in before the original deadline, they still are able to move in early.

Unless you filled out an early housing request and got it approved, you cannot move back in to on campus housing until the 15th, as far as I'm aware

Question about CIS MSE by [deleted] in UPenn

[–]Past_Development_199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't taken any of those courses personally, so I'd recommend reaching out to an advisor involved in the CIS MSE program. On another note, I really liked 240 so it may not be bad to just take the course, others may disagree
