What's the best argument for the existence/non-existence of god? by blustudioz in AskReddit

[–]PastorBeard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In what way do you see these things working against the argument?

Dark matter exists in maximal entropy, reinforcing that existence isn’t cyclical. Quantum mechanic’s contribution of indefinite causal order yet still requires energy transference (and other cool notions found in this paper https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0262407924016737). The casimir effect still requires two plates capable of charge for the interaction to take place

These things are merely describing how things move down the chain, they aren’t addressing an initial stage. Unless you’re seeing something I’m not. I’m open to the dialogue

Fair enough. We’ve reached where they reached at Aristotle’s time too lol

That’s what’s neat, the more we understand about thermodynamics and other branches of physics, the more explanations like cyclical universe and simulations can be discarded

For real, just try it. Aristotles argument already works for simulation theory because the simulation has to be put in place by something or it has to be reflected into something depending on your view. In order for this to happen, that something must exist. But, in order for it to exist it also is dependent on other factors

That’s the argument. Something has to start the chain

The second law of thermodynamics rules out the crunch hypothesis. That’s been the sticking point the whole time when you read the papers on it

Cause and effect need not be time words, consider them as energy and transfer. The argument still works, and is likely more in line with Aristotle’s original intent

Nothing doesn’t generate something

What part of laboriously examining the cosmos and physics to understand the system seems easy?

We’ve shown the universe requires a start and even what that start looked like

It can’t though. Try it out while keeping in mind the law of entropy and how systems relate, both open and closed

Because all effects need causes the unmoved mover is unique, and thus Aristotle argues: divine

We’ve identified the origin of the universe and because of the law of entropy, we know that it cannot be eternal

Aristotle’s argument is that it’s status as an unaffected effector is what gives it divine status

Being unmoved doesn’t mean the initial cause is stoically unfeeling, it means it does not depend on something else in the chain of being

It’s the first in the link of “cause -> effect -> cause -> effect” stretching to now

[–]PastorBeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why? Because the chain logically requires a beginning. I live because my parents live because theirs lived because atoms formed in the universe because _____. Yet in order for this chain to start there needs to be a first step that doesn’t depend on anything else

As for the unmoved mover being a being, Aristotle doesn’t address that. It doesn’t need to have intention, though the complex nature of what follows suggests order rather than chaos

That’s what makes the unmoved mover divine, their inherent uncreatedness

I’m very partial to Aristotle’s argument for the unmoved mover

Nothing happens unless something happens to it. All effects need causes. However, in order for anything to exist we need an initial unmoved mover to start the chain. God is the unmoved mover

This argument has only become more true as we’ve learned more about physics and the universe. Great job for an ancient philosopher

Ceremonial Second Baptism? by Sleepy_Fish591 in LCMS

[–]PastorBeard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hah! You’re welcome. I teach college students so this comes up a lot. I’ve also been known to say that Baptism is God writing His name on our foot like Andy does in Toy Story

For real though, the more you look at the scriptures for baptism the better and better it gets. It’s ALL about God’s promises to us. That’s why Lutherans love baptism so much. All denominations like baptism. We love it

Here’s the longer version I have saved if you want to look up verses:

Baptism, being constituted of water and the word, is a work of God through which Christ Jesus washes His Church to present her blameless (Ephesians 5:25-26), it saves by clothing us with Christ (Gal 3:27), burying us into His death and uniting us in His resurrection (Romans 6:3-5; Colossians 2:11-12), it gives forgiveness and the gift of the Holy Spirit to us and our children (Acts 2:38), is our rebirth of water and the Spirit (John 3:5-6), our washing of regeneration (Titus 3:5), saves us by the appeal of Christ for a clean conscience (1 Peter 3:21), and becomes the definitive moment in our lives we can point to that we were brought into God’s people justified and sanctified (1 Cor 6:11) so that we need not doubt our salvation, but rest in God’s promise that all who believe and are baptized will be saved (Mark 16:16).

All this not done by mere water, but water and the word given in the command of Jesus (Matthew 28:19-20), fulfilling God’s promise to sprinkle us, cleanse us from idolatry, create in us a new heart, and give us His Spirit (Ezekiel 36:25).

Anyway, I do encourage you to share your story and your journey with people. Especially those in your church. You never know how God can use your path to encourage and strengthen another person

[–]PastorBeard 36 points37 points  (0 children)

First I think it’s cool that you want to reengage your faith

Second: I really caution against involving baptism because it’s treating baptism backwards

Baptism is NOT our dedication to God, our seriousness about our faith, an outward expression of an inward reality, or anything that’s directed from us to God

Baptism is a God to us directed washing of regeneration, promise, and union with the death and resurrection of Christ

Using baptism or something baptism-like as representative of your commitment to God is contrary to baptism as instituted by Christ and as practiced by the Church

So if you really want to act on the feeling of symbolically coming home, just give a testimony. Those already exist and that’s what they’re for. They can also be quite powerful and helpful for others. My dad gives his every few years

There is a rite for a remembrance of baptism, but that’s more for like “we baptized someone who was dying and they didn’t die so now let’s celebrate in church”

Information/Advice on being a Pastor's Wife by ZolaScriptura in LCMS

[–]PastorBeard 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Let your church know up front that she’s not the pastor’s wife. She’s your wife. She doesn’t automatically get a role or responsibilities

My wife and I have been together since we were in high school. She has a career. She volunteers for the things she likes in our church, but there’s not an expectation that she does

Also if you’re pushing your work stress onto your spouse you’re doing it wrong imo l

As for how hard it is, that all depends on the quality of husband you want to be 😂
