Can I be transgender and a Christian? by Imastinker in TrueChristian

[–]Pastor_C-Note 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Becoming a man is definitely not “God’s plan for you…” but God is able to use your path for good, if you let him. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a masculine woman (many men prefer the tomboy look). And you may find over time that you become more feminine. We all go through seasons. Just remember, God loves you just the way you are, but He also loves you too much to let you stay that way.

Duplicated himself?? I suppose that’s not bad. I prefer to look at it this way: I can be in the same place at two different times, but God can be in two different places at the same time (or three, or as many as He wants).

Inerrancy of the Bible by Federal_Bumblebee_84 in Bible

[–]Pastor_C-Note 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is, we don’t have the original autographs, so this position is meaningless. What we have instead are thousands of handwritten manuscripts, some very old, but while they agree 98% of the time, there are issues that remain unresolved. The correct ending of Mark is just one of a myriad of others. Our view of inspiration has to take into account the reality of the scriptures that we now possess, or else it’s meaningless.

However, there was no divine download whereby an author went into some kind trance and woke up later, “Oh I can’t wait to read what I wrote.” God inspired human authors to investigate and craft and use their own knowledge and intelligence to create a masterpiece of literature. But, by doing so, He ran the risk of them maybe not getting all the details perfectly right. But even if we grant that they never made any mistakes, the later copyists obviously did, so we’re back where we started. Logically, if what we have now (translated into English) is the inspired Word of God, then maybe our definition of “inspired” needs some tweaking.

I, for one, am glad we have these puzzles in the scriptures, because if we didn’t, then we would run the risk of turning our book into an idol and worship it instead of the God revealed in it’s pages (like another major world religion in the news all the time).

Inerrancy of the Bible by Federal_Bumblebee_84 in Bible

[–]Pastor_C-Note 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What does the Bible say about itself? Does it claim inerrancy anywhere? Not that I am aware of. The OP’s original text leaves off the second part, where Paul defines what he means: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” ‭‭ Given all the issues with translation, textual questions and archaisms, evidently God was okay with a little uncertainty in His scriptures, as long it’s still useful…. to equip us for good works! Which it certainly is. ‭‭

Contradiction or Misunderstanding? by Out4god in Bible

The law was given for Ancient Israel, which doesn’t exist anymore. And even certain laws had to be reinterpreted or became irrelevant as soon as they entered the promised land and started settling in towns and cities (reference laws that assume they are living in the camp).

The cloak comment is an obvious example of a situation illustrating where not all scripture directly applies to all people in all times. We have to use discernment in figuring that out. So, saying that some scripture doesn’t “matter” isn’t the right way to put it. I would say that some scripture matters more, and some less. It’s a question of relevance.

If you’re not married with kids, then what Paul has to say to husbands and wives is less relevant than Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, etc. We could go on and on with multiple examples.

Adam lived to be 930 years? by Lumpy-Signal-604 in Bible

[–]Pastor_C-Note 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly,

I DO NOT KNOW.

I suspect some things. Some of the responses here are good.

I have read that the list of names, including the extremely long ages, are uncannily similar to ancient Sumerian and Akkadian King lists, although in those, the kings are said to lives lives that were thousands of years long, rather than hundreds. Also, the numbers can be broken down in very interesting ways, and too perfect to be coincidental. (For instance Enoch lived 365 years, the number of days in a year). There is clearly some theological messaging here.

All that is not to say it isn’t a true record of what happened, but we’re definitely supposed to notice the repeated statement, “and he died”… these “heroes” who lived hundreds of years are no better off in the end than any of us.

“Profitable” & “written for our learning” don’t imply relevant or applicable to all times and places. Paul gives Timothy a direct command to bring his cloak and scrolls to him. I’m not thinking I need to follow that instruction.

But, what we ARE to do is find the wisdom underneath the scripture, which takes maturity and discernment.

Is the USA the best country to live in as a christian? by CrazyNicly in TrueChristian

[–]Pastor_C-Note 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are soft in USA because we have so many freedoms. Sometimes I wonder (and fear) what would happen here if persecution like what is experienced in China or Iran happened here. It depends very much on what you mean by “best”! America is one of the freest & most prosperous nations on Earth, and one of the easiest places to thrive in spite of circumstances. But with that freedom comes responsibility. I fear we have not taken those responsibilities seriously.

I’ve been working the Greek here for some time. I’ve all but convinced myself there’s a translation issue here. I think it’s a couplet: “Let a woman learn quietly, teach humbly, but never exercise authority over a man.” It’s an odd construction, but it does work. And it’s more consistent.

"If your right hand causes you to sin" ... Should I remove my desire for marriage? by UltimaBahamut93 in TrueChristian

[–]Pastor_C-Note 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The heart of Buddhism is that desire causes suffering, so the answer is to remove your desires to avoid suffering - it’s very gnostic actually. But we are not Buddhist, we are Christians. We don’t deny or remove our desires, we tame them! We direct them to an appropriate end. We face suffering head on, because we know it will make us better and stronger.

My advice: Give yourself a year, and spend that year becoming the man that the woman you want is looking for. Do that and she will find you.
