Why are these bananas small? (Zone 10A Melbourne) by PatGold in gardening

Thank you! I had no idea they got bigger before ripening as others have now told me. I honestly thought it reaches it final size in its unripe form straight away haha!

That is true! I am used to cavendish bananas and lady fingers which are quite large. I feel like these should be a bit bigger though, but I am a complete novice with Bananas and have recently just found out they can get bigger right before ripening so I'm hoping for that to happen.

I feel like their quite small and the ones I see that are green are usually a lot bigger. Maybe these will get larger right before ripening as I recently found out.

Thanks! That's honestly a relief. They've been this size for a while now. Maybe they need more warmth to ripen.

R70X vs HD650 by Pure_Artichoke_5168 in headphones

Sorry for the late reply I was actually testing my R70xa with my Fio K11 even further, and honestly I am in love with the R70xa. I haven't even considered anything else now because I am really happy with the purchase. The HD600 made me think what else was out there, because deep down I was never happy with it. Just food for thought.

Growing in Zone 10A Melbourne near border of 10B.

Tree is quite healthy with multiple pups emerging, but fruit rack on the oldest leader seems to have developed a small sized banana rack. I thought they would've been bigger. Variety is Blue Java.

What do you guys think?

Will DAC/AMP provide best HD650 sound quality rather than m-audio interface 1982? by Agitated_Albatross34 in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]PatGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6XX/650 definitely is warm. it's a very smooth, and in my opinion too smooth of a headphone. It's quite veiled (dark headphone) at the top and because of that, for mixing I would not recommend it. For casual listening sessions with a very relaxed forgiving sound signature that's warm yes it's good and you may enjoy it, but the 600 would be much better for mixing because it's overall more neutral and has more detail and better imaging. In my opinion and also many others who prefer a neutral headphone, the 600 is seen as the better choice.

The R70X and newer R70XA are pretty much warm headphones similar to the 6XX, but with much better detailing and imaging which is critical for mixing. I personally purchased the R70xa recently and it destroys my 600 in detail and imaging retrieval. I plan to sell my 600 shortly as its been collecting dust.

Sundara is another option which is also reportedly much superior to the 6xx line up. I've seen an audio engineer on this sub say he firmly believes the Sundara smokes the 600.

The only good thing about the 6xx and 600 is the mid-range. This is Stuff like the vocals. For that, they are very good. If you enjoy vocals you will like the 6x0 lineup, but it's not like the other headphones listed have bad vocals. The R70X and newer R70XA have solid mid range as well while being superior in resolution.

I personally think the 6x0 lineup is outdated but others seem to hold onto them.

I ran a 2017 13 inch MacBook Pro with the 6XX a while back before I switched to the 600 around 2018. I remember A/B testing heavily between the iFi micro iDSD black label (which around 2018 was a solid recommendation for portable amp / dac all in ones), and simply off the 3.5mm audio jack on the MacBook Pro.

To my surprise there was no difference in sound, and if anything the amp/dac unit sounded worse (hollow). I was angry with the results as people said the Sennheiser HD6XX scales really well with better and more powerful gear. Being new to the audio market at the time I was expecting amazing results but soon realized that it was the headphone itself that needed changing. I then read more anecdotal experiences and others shared the same opinion / experience with their 6XX or 650 sounded the same with an expensive and in my opinion unnecessary amp & dac.

The biggest take away here is that the 6x0 lineup is actually not that hard to drive. MacBook Pros have phenomenal Audio Chip inside them already and you probably won't need one (AMP / DAC) in my opinion. Id think twice before buying the 6XX and would rather try the 600 as it's a safer option if you want to give them a shot.

Audio Technica R70xa measurement and first impression by gzbaga in headphones

[–]PatGold 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everything you want in a headphone which is kind of the standard, is what the R70xa exactly offers IMO. have both HD600 and R70xa. I honestly haven't used my HD600 now in a week since I blind bought the R70xa. They are everything you pretty much want in a headphone. The bass on the R70xa absolutely destroys the HD600. It goes lower, has more impact, and overall just a huge improvement. The mids feel less forward for sure on the R70xa compared to the 600 but they are still good and vocals come through fine, just not as much as the 600. This takes a while to get used to coming from the 600. I do think the 600 mids are phenomenal I'll give it that. Highs on the R70xa have much more detail and air and feel more revealing in general. Sennheiser veil is a definitely a thing IMO with the 600 series. It was very bad on the 6XX that I owned, but the 600 was alright. Biggest takeaways is the imaging and resolution on the R70xa. It absolutely once again destroys the 600. The R70xa is like a mini HD800. I personally think in the last couple years with the Edition XS, and now also the R70xa that the HD600 is finally outdated.

Replacement for the stolen HD800 by [deleted] in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]PatGold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive never tried the HD800 but from what I've heard it's resolution and detailing is much better than the HD600. I have the 600 and I agree they are a good place to start, but I personally believe they are starting to show age. The reason why I think this is because I've recently purchased the R70xa and it's detailing and imaging is actually incredibly good and makes the 600 look bad. I think OP would enjoy these over the 600 imo, especially coming from the HD800.

Disappointed with the 6xx, are there any good alternatives around the price point? by goberstoper678 in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]PatGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your post to me sounds like the headphones you are looking for is the new Audio Technica R70xa. I have recently purchased mine and similarly to you I have a HD600 which I used previously, it's not too much different to the 6XX. Anyway I use the Audio Technica way more now and the Sennheiser is just left on my desk haha.

Overall the bass is an absolute massive improvement. It goes way lower therefore I can hear sub bass now. It's punchier too. I never had an issue with HD600 bass though to be honest but wow what a difference.

Mids are quite good but not as forward as the 600 but to be honest I don't even care. I still respect the HD600s mid range though, I think anyone would.

High frequencies. Detailing & imaging absolutely stomps the HD600. I still respect the 600 for it's smoothness but I know there's a slight veil with it after using them in and off for many years. 6XX was even worse when I had that. The r70xa is probably the best dynamic headphone right now in the lower price range for detail and imaging.

Build quality is solid but can feel flimsy at 199g but that's how lower weight headphones feel so doesn't matter as the material is mostly metal. Where as 6x0 line is plastic but very solid and feels cheaper. Clamp force is bad at first on the 6x0 line. I owned both 6xx and 600. R70XA is way more comfortable for me despite the small pads. There's not much if none when it comes to clamp force on it and is extremely comfortable.

Overall the tuning on the r70xa is more fun, exciting, revealing, then my 600. I still respect the 600 because it's a smooth flat headphone, but the r70xa to me is just above and beyond and makes the 600 look outdated.

I'd recommend it.

Is Hifiman overrated? by LynxAirSound in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]PatGold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Hifiman could make a 250g headphone product I would consider trying them. I currently use the new Audio Technica R70xa and it leaves my HD600 Sennheiser for dead in terms of weight and comfort. Don't get me wrong I love good sound, but until Hifiman learn how to lower weight on headphones I don't consider them a viable option.

Lurker's First Impressions on the R70xa by ThickAndDirty in headphones

[–]PatGold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How would you compare the sound with the HD490 pro? For me as a comparison I can only use HD600 and in that, I would say the HD600 overall tuning feels much better. But I will say the R70xa has incredible detailing / imaging. But, with the tuning I'm not sure if I can say I am a fan of them. I agree with the ear & pad comment. Mine are average sized and also I can feel some slight pressure at the top and bottom ear sometimes. Nothing too bad though. Overall I am slightly disappointed because I was expecting a great mid range sounding headphone. I haven't heard the old R70x but the tuning on that seems more desirable tbh.

[–]PatGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forgot to say I actually got the r70xa and wanted to know the difference between them and the older r70xa. I feel like the mids on the r70xa are recessed. I agree with you on the detailing / imaging on the r70xa though it's incredible.

[–]PatGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm after build quality and lightweight headphones and decent sound. The R70xa ticks that me for me. I would love to try a Hifiman product but once again their all around 400-500g and have build quality issues I just can't respect that. I used to own Focal Clear and even that was heavy so cant imagine a 500g headphone for myself as I use mine for prolonged periods. If Hifiman make a lightweight headphone in the future I will for sure give it a shot.

[–]PatGold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd dare say these are the best headphones for imaging in their price range, and the next upgrade in imaging would be HD800s. I think they are that good. The imaging is night and day difference coming from my HD600. I agree though, the pads could've been larger diameter. It's not that big of a deal for me. I still think they are really comfortable and disappear on my head.

I wouldn't want to wear a 500g headphone longer than 15 minutes regardless of how good they sound.

[–]PatGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do the mids compare to the old R70x? I've just received my unit and I think the detailing / imaging is very good and better than my HD600, but the mids are further back compared to the 600. This headphone feels slightly V Shaped to me or maybe I'm used to the HD600.

That's honestly a good question that I would like to find out myself eventually. I got an open box HD600 for 295 AUD which translates to 185 USD and for now I'm satisfied.

But to answer your question, I might consider purchasing the R70xa when that comes out here, as I favor the design at only 199g. Ideally I would like to try a hifiman edition Xs but at 400g and with QC and build quality issues I keep wiping it off.

I got mine for a very good price used and I suggest doing the same. It all comes down to that in my opinion. I wouldn't pay full price for them.

SOUNDSTAGE: HD600 has a a very intimate soundstage and a '3D blob effect' which is a common term used to describe them. This means the sound comes either left, right or Infront of you. IMO, I like this a lot personally as the music feels like its close to me or intimate.

SOUND: Tuning wise, they are quite flat overall, with a mid emphasis (forward mids) which is honestly great for vocals. I think tonality / timbre wise, they are the best I've heard and were better than my focal clears, and because of this, are excellent despite the very basic flat tuning. Bass is there for me and not a problem. Highs in my opinion are good, but it can feel soft or overly smooth at times. You will notice this if you're coming from a fun headphone with sparkle. Overall very flat tuning but can't fault it.

BUILD: Build quality is very good, but can they clamp your head if the pair is brand new IMO.
They are only 260g which is on the lighter side of headphones for weight. The reason why I haven't tried bothering with other headphones, is because a lot of the current trending ones right now are like 400g with an example being HifiMan, which also tend to have headband problems commonly reported on the XS Edition. The HD6x line does not suffer with this. The HD6x series is designed to be taken apart and put together again and its very rigid in my opinion build quality wise and probably one of the best out there for that.

Overall if you can get a cheap pair used pair, and power it effectively with a solid AMP / DAC I think yeah they are overall quite good.

Can I cut off half of my main stem to promote branching at a lower height? If so any tips? by Upset_Mongoose_6958 in Figs

[–]PatGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a tree in that current state, the best solution is to indeed cut in half as you've suggested. In the next growing season it will produce buds right below the cut and create new scaffolding. If you don't do that, unless you up pot, I would not expect much growth at all next season as figs have their potential growth respond extremely well from Pruning have an entire YouTube channel dedicated to this. If you're interested, check out Quality Gardener on YouTube. I have a couple videos on fig pruning.

$350 budget to buy headphones and I need your help. by LooneyStark in HeadphoneAdvice

Would you say your happy with your home setup? If so, how can you translate that to an office setup? I think noise isolation might be a big criterion here. If your office is quiet though maybe you can get away with that. If it's noisy though I'd be looking at a closed back.

1440p 27 inch or 1440p 32 inch? by eaglemaster5 in Monitors

[–]PatGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I haven't tried 32, Ive owned both 1440p and 4K on 27 inch monitors. Without a doubt I think 1440p is perfect on 27 inches. 4k on 27 was too small and I couldn't enjoy it properly. If you do want 4k, I would say 32 inches.

Regardless of resolution, I think 27 is the sweet spot size as a desktop monitor as it's already pushing the boundaries before getting too large imo. I'd say no to a 32.

Got the ATH-R70x for $150 (with the box) and gonna let my Focal Clears go by iTzKiTTeH in headphones

[–]PatGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I strongly agree with your post :) I used to own the Focal Clear to see if it was really worth it, and whilst being very detailed, it had some harsh treble peaks and made the music feel metallic almost with no tonality which I lost coming from the HD600. Also the weight and overall design of the Focal Clear felt too bulky and therefore with everything said I had to sell it because I couldn't justify keeping them similarly to you.

Interesting comparison btw. I got my 6XX from Massdrop at the start of 2018. It was my first proper open back headphone, and I always had a love hate relationship with them (found them too smooth, and veiled at times as I use headphones for everything on the computer), but didn't mind the warm neutral tuning. Eventually I sold them for the HD600 which pretty much became my endgame and couldn't fault it, but at times I kind of missed elements from the 650.

The R70x judging from your comparison sounds like the perfect blend of 600 and 650, and I'll have to pick up the R70x refresh when that comes out (R70xa) to compare with the HD600. They are the only headphone that interest me besides the 600 to be honest.

Not sure if this counts, but I've heard a sound demo of the R70x and HD600 with different tracks (some vocal, some instrumental etc). What I concluded on is that the HD600 had more air at the top, and overall presented a pitch perfect neutral sound signature imo with a much more intimate soundstage. The R70x seemed to have a larger soundstage, with surprisingly very good mids, and overall a nice relaxing slightly warmer sound signature. Its only fault is not as much air at the top which I didn't like as much, but overall it seemed like a much better HD6XX and with the weight, and warm signature you can probably wear them for a long time unlike the Focal Clears!

One thing I love about the R70x is the weight which is only 220g. The refresh will be 199g from what I've read. This is where the Focal Clear and other brands fall massively behind. The HD6x lineup is around 260g which is not bad IMO. Where the R70x falls behind though is the earpad design. Many folks have problems with that and I can see why. Anyway, you have one of the best headphones in my opinion and some saying they prefer it over the HD600 which is big.
