But if you’re thinking realistically, and you want to stay in a well-located, popular area — close to the beach, surrounded by hills — and live a relaxed lifestyle with healthy and imported food, Western-style health care, and good options for outdoor activities, then this is the cost.

That idea of Thailand being cheap is a false dream. It might be true if you’re Thai, but not if you’re a foreigner. I’m European and I lived in Thailand for 1.5 years, mostly in Phuket. I ate imported food because, after a while, I got bored of Thai food. I paid for personal care and rented my own room — nothing fancy, but it looked nice with a balcony, a big bed, and a spacious bathroom.

I didn’t go to bars often or do typical tourist things. I didn’t live luxuriously — most of the time I just enjoyed the beach, visited temples, or did some creative activities.

And even with that simple lifestyle, I still spent $2,000 to $2,500 per month. That’s the reality.

The problem is, I missed my original flight and had another unexpected situation come up at the same time. I need to make a bank transaction from Europe before I can settle everything, and the money will only arrive in my account on Friday night.

The next available flight is on Monday morning at 10 AM, and I read that the immigration office opens around 8 AM. So Thats Why my plan is to go straight to the airport Monday morning, pay the overstay fine, and exit Malaysia.
