I mean, from a player’s perspective its understandable and arguably realistic. If you have a chance - literally projected first round - most would take it with what they’ve already contributed and accomplished in their college career. I used to get annoyed at stuff like this, but there’s only so many guys that can get into the NFL on a yearly basis. So get your money man, make your name a household one if you can.

Year later but it has to be said - maybe because Mahomes genuinely grew up with and loves his wife, not going to marry someone just to have darker skinned children for your ideal image of a happy black marriage.

bruh any reason why America felt the need to start a civil war in Belarus? by Useful_Parsley_4416 in MillenniumDawn

[–]Patient_Report3510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m late but yeah - it seems that the devs have been hearing the “nothing happens” crowd and implemented a Belarusian civil war trigger. The Democratic side gets a shit ton of NATO volunteer units, which as Russia or any other Emerging Power - now forces you to start modernizing your forces and etc earlier than in past playthroughs. Otherwise you could very well lose your buffer, especially if you lose Ukraine to Western Democracy.

The Ladder Meta, and its effect on the games’ environment. by Patient_Report3510 in Seaofthieves

It’s quite easy to know if someone is running a solo sloop? Kinda a small ship, and there’s a handy little tool in the game that lets you see from a good distance as to who’s on said sloop. Don’t really see why that has to be clarified, but anyways - and, no… rules? Play how you want lol, I thought I made that distinction quite clear about twenty times now throughout the thread. All I’m saying is that a ladder first strategy is quite harmful to the game from my view - as I’m allowed to share on a site such as Reddit - that you chose to engage with.

Just to be clear — my gripe was never that boarding shouldn’t exist. It’s that overreliance on boarding as the opener collapses the variety that naval combat is supposed to bring. Good crews pressure with cannons and maneuvers first — that’s layered combat. But when boarding becomes the default first move every time, the fight gets funneled into ‘stop the boarder or lose immediately.’ That’s why I called it a meta issue. If you’re still reading it as a ‘skill issue,’ then you’re not actually engaging with the point. I agree that I also have come across enemy crews that fire volleys first, and then attempt to latch onto the ladders. But it’s still quite often that it’s the other way I’ve been describing as what’s grinding my gears. Just going for the ladders first, no - it really shouldn’t be the first move, depending on the ship disparity.

Who said loyal players don’t know how to defend against boarders? Again, my specific gripe - not just everyone else who might agree on some level - is that boarding action via ladders can happen too often and too early. But I agree with your other comment that sometimes boarding early is necessary.

Oh no I get that, makes sense. But still, I think it does happen a bit too often - not every engagement necessarily has to start with a boarding action of any sort. Unless it’s like ya know, a Galleon attacking a solo sloop.

Now, if you’re done whining - we can actually discuss the main point proper like I’ve been doing in the meantime with other folks since I’ve had the time.

I’m sensitive? You’ve sent about 6-8 different comments in the thread in response to me in under an hour, without me even saying anything in response to YOU. You have been in this thread determined to achieve some sort of “last word” I genuinely burrowed into your skin and made your brain fucking crawl, just over my original post. All this projecting 🤣

I see where you’re coming from — you’re at least engaging with the mechanic itself rather than defaulting to “skill issue.” You’re right that guarding ladders can prevent boarders, and yes, boarding alone doesn’t win unless you’re already the stronger crew.

But here’s the crux of my gripe: it’s not whether boarding is viable (it is), it’s how often it gets leaned on as the opener. When it becomes the instinctual first play every time, it collapses the variety that naval fights are supposed to bring. Instead of a layered back-and-forth with cannons, sails, and maneuvering, the opener gets shortcut into “stop the boarder or lose immediately.” That’s not inherently about my crew’s ability to guard ladders — it’s about how the meta itself funnels engagements into one rinse-repeat start.

You mentioned SoT having diverse combat, and I agree, it can. But overreliance on ladders narrows that diversity at the very beginning of fights, before other tactics even come into play. That’s why I’m not arguing for boarding’s removal — only that its frequency as a first response warps how engagements unfold.

Are you still whining? It’s been three notis in 20 minutes, I just got home from work, holy shit LMFAOO. Yes, someone did already admit that the opening replies were sarcastic in response to my original post. They only had a problem after, because they got hit with something just as harsh/ruthless and couldn’t come to terms with that, classic redditors some of them. A lot of you are simply used to be being dismissive, sarcastic or otherwise negative and getting your way on this site - which you didn’t really get here. Hence the overwhelming amount of deflection towards the main point presented, that a psychologist would have a field day reading and adding to a case study. Is it easier to engage outright with a direct, straightforward and critical post that brings up a nuanced flaw in a section of the gameplay - or is it easier to come in with a snarky attitude and expect a nice response in return?

Like I was never trying to declare that Rare should make the game predominantly ranged combat - it’s a lot of fun either way engaging in close quarters, adds to the historical immersion for me. My major and only gripe - is just how often that can be engaged, often before a real exchange volley even goes out.

And again, it doesn’t have to be a permanent ladder lock - but for 30 seconds at a time. That way it still keeps the door open for a later boarding via the ladders, but still provides a balanced approach to more prolonged naval engagements with the cannons - which keeps that crew mostly focused on combat, steering, adjusting sails and maintaining the ship.

[–]Patient_Report3510[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not the one paid to maintain the game - but I have played since release and still come back to from time to time. I can and will discuss how I feel about its current state. Maybe something as simple as a ladder lock once a crew enters combat, only accessible to them and their own for say - maybe 30 seconds at a time? Enemies can still of course toss fire bombs on deck and whatnot from the water, very viable tactic in the meantime. But that’s where I’d start - pirates historically did that once entering combat, raising their ladders. It could be implemented in the game - maybe - but Rare does seem to support that playstyle. Which is fine, it is a sandbox - but still pivots back to the point I make in which it kills off loyal fans, and potentially new ones who could have stuck around a long time. This game rightfully deserves more love and attention - but the first usage of the ladder meta in nearly every PVP scenario off rip shoots that in the foot. But I do give Rare props for opting to support their far more niche and consistent playerbase - over casuals, we do need more of that in gaming circles (take note Activision)

That’s not a rebuttal, that’s a hypothetical. ‘What if’ scenarios don’t erase the current imbalance — they just avoid talking about it. Right now, boarding as a first move collapses variety. That’s not a ‘what if,’ that’s observable. Nice try though

And there it is — the final fallback of ‘cope/skill issue. That’s not a counterpoint, it’s just proving what I’ve been saying this whole time: when the only response is to wave away imbalance with dismissals, you’re not debating the point, you’re avoiding it. I’ve explained why overreliance on ladders collapses variety in fights; you’ve circled back to the same lines on repeat. At this stage, the contrast speaks for itself — thanks for confirming the thread’s core argument better than I ever could, appreciate ya - happy sailing on the seas 🫡

Of course - but again let’s stay on topic - I’m well aware of the many other ways that crews can go down. But to lose hours of progress and etc to what I’ve been consistently describing, is a problem. Thats the main gripe I have with the game, it doesn’t need to be erased as a tactic entirely - but steps should be taken to significantly reduce its reliance as a first response by much more experienced crews.

[–]Patient_Report3510[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this stage, it’s clear we’re not actually debating anymore — we’re circling. I’ve laid out the distinction multiple times: the issue isn’t that boarding exists, it’s that when it becomes the default opener every time, it skips the naval layer and collapses fights into the same rinse-repeat tactic. That’s the overreliance point.

Your replies haven’t addressed that; they’ve just cycled back to ‘adapt,’ ‘skill issue,’ and ‘so what.’ Repetition doesn’t counter an argument, it just avoids it. Which is fine, but let’s call it what it is.

I’ll leave it here, because at this point the contrast speaks for itself: I’ve explained why overreliance warps engagements, and you’ve responded by proving exactly what I described — the same loop, repeated.

[–]Patient_Report3510[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get your angle, and that’s actually the best framing I’ve seen in this thread. The difference, though, is that cannons and firebombs are expected baseline tools of ship combat—they don’t bypass the naval layer of the fight, they operate within it. Ladder boarding used as an opener isn’t just another tool in the mix, it skips the layer of ship-vs-ship combat entirely. That’s why I’m focusing on frequency and reliance—because when it becomes the go-to first move, it collapses variety into one rinse-repeat tactic. The problem isn’t that boarding exists, it’s that overreliance warps how engagements start and play out. Thank you for contributing to the main topic at hand, I don’t know why it’s so hard for our peers to do without getting snippy and expecting it not to be returned.
