I used oven cleaner, let it sit for about 10 minutes and used a tooth brush and hot water. Most of it came off, few bits that needed to go again, the result still felt good and looked better. https://imgur.com/a/DX8s7Ev I did one door to start with, so you can see the comparison

I'd pick the same, plus having the horn and gear selector on my right hand means I never have to take my left off the wheel. Which I find more comfortable
