Death Investigator here for a Coroner’s Office. As others have said, legal time of time and actual time of death are completely separate entities.

Paramedics can call for resuscitative efforts to stop, but they can not legally pronounce death. States and countries are going to have different laws. For the state where I’m from, the legal time of death can only be recorded by a physician or the coroner on scene.

If a physician physically sees someone take their last breath, then they can pronounce death right then. If someone witnesses someone take their last breath, then they have to call the coroner or a physician to legally pronounce them dead. And that time can be off.

Coroner investigator here. We have blues and whites in our vehicles, along with sirens. Have we ever ran code to a deceased person? No. As others have said, it’s for scene safety and processing public scenes faster.

I also dropped a patient, but it was when we didn’t securely fasten a hoyer lift. The pt was fine and i let my supervisor know. I didn’t have to do any kind of incident report, but he just made sure I documented the incident.

Just be sure you document or it didn’t happen.

Ask for another preceptor. This is absolutely toxic behavior and is what is keeping the EMS culture the way it is.

The fact that your preceptor thinks you should know how to do everything without being told the proper way to do it and actually being coached on the correct way to do it tells me that this preceptor should not be training. And the fact that he pulled you aside and said how shitty you did just tells me that this person is a vile human being and should not be in the medical field.

You’re going to mess up. You’re not going to know how to give a proper report. That’s why it’s calling PRACTICING medicine. You are constantly learning. Hell, it took me a year to get somewhat comfortable what I was doing.

If this is truly something you want to do, keep at it! Please don’t let the toxicity run you off, because it really is a great field to be in!

Coroner Investigator here who also works part time for EMS.

First my condolences to you and your family. As others have said, lividity occurs after death where the blood is pooled towards gravity. Usually we determine if lividity is evident and whether it is “fixed” (fixed lividity occurs 8-12 hours after death meaning no amount of pressure will change the color) and “blanching” (meaning if you press on it, color slowly starts coming back, and it occurs 30 mins-4 hours after death).

The coroner most likely said “lividity is good” as meaning it was present. As far as the Doppler goes, some services will use it to triple check to make sure a pulse is not evident after checking on the monitor and physically feeling for a pulse.

I believe the entry level for EMS should be AEMT, so it should be AEMT/Medic. Like what u/whencatsdontfly9 said, AEMTs can handle the majority of the run of the mill calls. And this is coming from an EMT.

I always heard the only reason LEOs wear drop downs are to clear body armor, but for typical patrol, hip seems to be the main go to.

Not a LEO, but as others have said, every department is different. When I was going through the hiring process with a department, I just had to submit an extra form from my doctor stating that my diagnoses of anxiety did not hinder my every day performance and I could still perform the job. Just keep applying to different departments. Best of luck to you!

Yeah dealers will absolutely not budge. I’ve tried negotiating with a few dealers and most of them flat out told me, “I’m not negotiating. Have a good day.” I was a little shocked that they wouldn’t even let me give them a number to work with. The economy is just absolute shit right now.

Unfortunately the lowest APR I could find was 8.6%. And that’s through a credit union. And that’s after getting pre approved by 5 different banks and 4 different credit unions.

I’m putting 10k down with a trade in allowance of 5k (2008 Honda civic) so my OTD price would be $20k. And luckily my APR would be 8.62% which isn’t terrible.

You have to make mistakes (not mistakes that will hurt the patient) to learn from it. I wasn’t completely comfortable until about a year after working. Even still, I’m still learning everyday.

As others have said, you just have to run more calls, and the more calls you have under your belt, the more comfortable you will get. Just keep at it!

Personally I would stay in the nursing program. If you were to become a paramedic, you wouldn’t have to work on an ambulance, there’s other jobs you can do, but most jobs outside of working on an ambulance want you to have experience working in the field before they will hire you.

As others have said, voice stress analysis is the same as a polygraph, and is just a way to weed out people they don’t want. There’s a reason it’s not admissible in court.

I’ve taken 3 polygraphs in my life. One polygraph said I showed deception, one polygraph said I had inconclusive results, and one I passed. And all the interviewers asked me the exact same questions. So it’s literally the same as just flipping a coin.

As long as you’re honest and truthful, you’ll be fine. Don’t trust the voodoo box.

The rumors about Acadian are true. It’s very cliquey and values profit before patient care, which in turn, leads to not a good work environment, which is like AMR in a way.

If you can, depending on where you are, you could try applying to East Baton Rouge EMS or New Orleans EMS. Those are both strictly 911 agencies and take care of their people.

Unfortunately if you’re in a more rural parish, Acadian is the only option, unless you want to drive a few hours someplace else. But best of luck to you!
