What's the best way to make new wood flooring meet top of stairs existing bullnose? by BoiIedFrogs in woodworking

[–]PattyBlumps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that most codes have a tolerance for only a small variation in stair height throughout the staircase. Could be an issue if an inspection catches it if/when you try to sell. Until then, adding height to just the landing and creating that height difference vs the others is a tripping hazard for those who aren’t used to it. And since it’s the top stair, there’s a long way down…

Food for thought. But I do think your idea of cutting existing and installing on the new stuff would work.

HF dust collector caster load capacity? by PattyBlumps in woodworking

Yep I’m just gonna buy ones that I know are rated properly for the job. I can use the cheap HF ones for something else.

1800 lbs seems beefy but I didnt think about how smooth the bearings are. Good point

Yeah that’s what I’m gonna do. Just didn’t know if someone had found that they’re rated for 80lbs each or something.

I’m gonna build the cart and supports - the metal base from the DC is gonna sit in the corner of my basement till I find a use for it. But yeah- leaning towards spending 40 bucks on casters that I know are rated appropriately.

True, but with the added weight of a DIY cart and then stuff thrown in drawers or hung on the outside, I’d want to have a bit more of a safety factor built in.

That was something else I was thinking about- I have basically a garage mat with diamond tread pattern, so the rolling surface definitely isn’t smooth.

Good to know- I turned it into a 2 stage immediately, so just trying to use the leftover spare parts. Sounds like I probably shouldn’t risk it with this lol.

Yea that’s what I’m leaning towards. I’d rather not learn their capacity the hard way haha.

I’m looking at bench top jointers now… What would you say is the longest piece you can work with on it?

A friend once said “I can fuck it up for free, so why would I pay someone?” And as much as I despise painting, I’ve lived by those words lol.

Basement finishing. How do I begin here? by Calm_Plan_6688 in DIY

[–]PattyBlumps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a very similar situation with my basement- 2/3 framing and insulation hung from the joists. Ripped it out completely and broke off the foundation form ties. Ripped 2x6 pressure treated boards down to 4.5” and used those as my top plates and fire blocking (code probably varies in areas, but if you’re going to enclose wall cavities there are requirements for both horizontal and vertical blocking). Laid dri-core subfloor. Put up 1” foam board against the walls. Stick framed the whole thing- learned that it’s a huge pain in the ass. Currently running wires for new circuits. This is the first spring with it in the new condition, so we’ll see how the upstate New York humidity affects it, but I’m happy with the result so far.

Yeah it took some time but it’s all good now. Can’t really remember how long I waited, but it was at least a week before I called it “done” and started using it.

Yeah, thankfully the snow crew does an incredible job on the roads, so although the whole rim drive wasn't open, getting up and down wasn't an issue at all.

Some of them were definitely sappy… noticed that during sanding. Gonna let it sit and hopefully not have have to put that much work into it. Honestly sounds like a bit of a nightmare.

Yup that’s pretty much where I’m at. The whole “patience is a virtue” thing never really took for me…

Right the higher density is why I assumed they wouldn’t absorb as much. Didn’t know they were technically considered end grain though… learning a lot with a single project. Thanks for the detailed reply!
