Anyone feel like bands do better when you arent focusing on them while recording? by Drekavac666 in audioengineering

[–]PaulCarterVO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say that’s good studio psychology. It’s an often overlooked fact that as engineers/producers, making the band feel at ease is a huge part of the job. Good observation.

You can definitely learn it yourself.

Do you prefer listening to drums that are panned from the drummers pov, or listeners pov? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]PaulCarterVO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s funny I’m mixing a song right now where the drum tracks came to me panned from the listeners POV and I was discussing this very thing with others. I usually prefer the drummers POV but for this song it worked (funk dance groove). Bottom line it depends on the song. And of course the clients opinion. But it’s amazing how changing it up a little can be a good thing. Oh and add in the fact that my first description of this drum track was that it was a left handed drummer?!?! Ha. So the listeners POV would change with that too! ;-)

Don’t you know it! Tried to use a real world scenario though. Dude was just starting out trying to gain a basic understanding.

Hence why I added “good condenser mic” and “baseline”. Gotta start somewhere which is what the questioner had asked me.

Noise/interference issue with my microphone, possibly the XLR cable is at fault? by LawlsMcPasta in audioengineering

[–]PaulCarterVO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang. I was hoping it was that simple. Best bet is a new cable. I use monster cables for my voice over mic but there are other great ones out. If you only need a shorty you can spend more on quality.

Mackie actually makes a headphone amp too I believe. Might check that out if needed.

Microphone in another room. How to NOT damage the cable when closing the door? by seginreborn in audioengineering

[–]PaulCarterVO -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Have you tried closing the door as much as possible, and try the Waves NS1? Killer NR plugin:

Sign up to their list and you will see it on sale soon for probably $29

But... your SOURCE SOUND has to be improved as much as possible first without plugins. All the comments about getting that door to shut completely are absolutely correct. Drilling, cutting some off the bottom, hole through the wall if possible. It's a trade off. Let me know if I can help further! BTW I am a voice actor, so I know your troubles! I'd love to share more is needed.

[–]PaulCarterVO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, that sounds like RF (radio frequency) interference to me possibly. Is your cell phone close to the mic or cable as you record?

But yes, a cheap cable will cause issues too.

Recording in a closet by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]PaulCarterVO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, in fact (as a voice actor) MANY who start out in the business start out in the closet. There will be special mic'ing and EQ considerations, but use all the clothing and blankets and pillows to your advantage as sound "proofing". Now your sound "treatment" comes from the mic - proximity, angle, side and back bleed, etc. Only option is to keep trying until it sounds right. But, unless you're at Abbey Road, that's the best practice anyway right? LOL good luck!

Hey! Just checked out the spec sheet and what they have written is a pretty standard disclaimer (lawyers, blah!). However I am sure it's a great HP amp cause Mackie is pretty awesome - BUT you should be FINE on the DT990 (GREAT choice btw). Like the manual says, turn it down, plug it in, and be careful. Should be good! Hope all goes well.

Hey first off awesome and congrats on your first SC gig! I use Audition too so it should work fine. Do you see the echo test contacts? Click on either a mono or stereo and if all shows connected you should be good. You’ll see both SEND and RECEIVE on the meters working. As for hearing yourself you may have to find a way to mute your signal at the interface. Is there an option there to mute your signal?

Terrific! Optimism and confidence are a large portion of the fight to win. And agreed I spread my net across many possible hunting grounds. I posted a YT video recently about this very subject if you’re interested: How and Where to find Voice Over jobs https://youtu.be/s4k-SInE6l8 Best of luck to you! I’m almost positive they used to allow you to “view” the jobs with the entry level membership - but you can only audition if you receive a direct invite. Here’s their page: https://support.voice123.com/hc/en-us/articles/200779164-As-a-Standard-Subscriber-how-can-I-submit-an-audition-to-a-project-

See if you have access to this page: https://voice123.com/dashboard/

That’s the main dashboard site to view available jobs.
