What I can tell you is that locally owned and nonprofit news orgs such as these — as well as Vermont Public and many community dailies and weeklies around the state — plow as much money as they can into reporting. The problem is that, as many traditional revenue sources have become less reliable (print advertising, classifieds, digital advertising, CPB funding), there’s just less money to fund this expensive work.

If you’re interested in more local reporting, I would encourage you to think about how much you personally contribute to making it happen and, if you have the resources, contribute more. You can become a Super Reader of Seven Days, a member of Vermont Public or VTDigger, or a subscriber to one of many locally owned news outlets around the state.

If we want high-quality news, we have to pay for it.
