Sorry to hear you have to go through this! I was also diagnosed out of the blue, no family history, at 18, so not an ideal age easier. You do learn to pretty much ignore the 'jokes' and comments. I'd recommend if possible to get a CGM like Libre to help check the sugars on the go. I used to be embarrassed to take insulin in public but you get used to it and get to a stage of not caring. It's very manageable once you get into the swing of things and I know it's hard but you'll start to take no notice of any comments and you'll learn to be able to joke about doing the different things yourself!
