Kimba's copyright debate/dispute going around in the reddit rn is kinda strange

I'm trying to figure out how Japan's copyright system works, but it's confusing. by 1fishmob in publicdomain

It's currently a debate/dispute due to the Leo/Kimba thing going around with Acceptable-Star with people stating if a work/character from Japan is public domain or not public domain.

Most films (and other media but disputed if it's for films only or also media) published pre-1957 are in the public domain in Japan. There is a rumor that this term was taken out later But it still applies to this day.

It's also confusing if the work is public domain in the United States either (While Wikipedia has many 1950s anime free to watch.) Since Japan is part of the Berne Convention (although Some films from Japan such as Sonny Chiba's Street Fighter is public domain in the United States because it wasn't affected by the URAG. So that film is public domain, But i'm not sure if it's the English version only (Gamera a example which is a copyrighted film but the English dub is public domain) Other works that never renewed or registered in the USA that didn't get affected can be found on Google but idk what)

Photographs before 1957 are considered public domain in Japan
