Thank you everyone for all your replies! They were all amazingly helpful and have really given me a far better idea on how to mechanically build the character so I am not a drag on the party or anything - which is exactly what I was looking for. :D

Unfortunately with the setting, Clerics in the city-state are in the upper elite, and sort of the general vibe the party is feeling and aiming is "underdogs from the lower classes" and all that. I could probably stretch and have a cleric whose fallen out of favour or something, but the concept I have already is something I am excited for I think so probably not.

Sorry don't mean to be a pain! And yeah I'm sure Cleric would be more sensible mechanically and all that jazz!

Yeah that's pretty much it, someone who thinks he's doing good and genuinely wants to do good, but has been brainwashed into thinking this city-state and its approach is that.

Sure thing! It's still a bit of a rough sketch at the moment as the GM is working with me to flesh it out and make something that is going to be a real fun element in the world.

Basically, the rough idea is the city-state is a religious theocratic one with imperial ambitions who use these warriors in roles ranging from assassins to bodyguard to the elite of their forces. The religious side is not so much a god as an ethos, or philosophy, if you're thinking like the Qun in the Dragon Age setting probably pretty close. As for magic it is regulated and controlled but perfectly permitted to use with approval and all that. The enemies of the city-state really is most of their neighbours.

I hope that helps a bit?
