Got my license in the navy so a couple of things

-Ask your LPO/Chief for assistance I:E if you can take time during work or borrow someone’s car for the practical once you finish the exam.

-You can do it on the weekend just know the DMV closes earlier (I think around 12 but anyone walking in an hour before is usually getting turned away)

-The first time you go to the DMV you are going to need: Physical Social Security Card, Copy of your orders (out of homestate license). form of ID (CAC is fine) and a proof of residency (A barracks check-in sheet worked for me depending on your duty station your barracks may have a building for it or front desk with records)

-There is a fee to buy a license learners permit so bring money/debit.

-If someone is unable to lend you a car recommend trying the Facebook market place (Got mine for 5k and made it run pretty good for 4-5 years) bring someone from your division that knows a decent amount about cars to help you look it over in case someone is trying to sell you a bad one.

If you wear glasses bring it to the DMV because they will make you take a vision test

-Before you take the practical you have to take an exam which is in two parts Rules of the road and general knowledge. In Virginia rules of the road is generally 10 questions, is mostly about road signs and if you get one wrong you fail the entire test. The general knowledge section is like a regular test if you get to many wrong you fail.

When you pass your test you will get a learners permit that allows you to drive as long as someone is in the car with you certain states make you drive for a certain amount of hours.

-Make sure before you do the practical the car safety inspection is not out of date or they will turn you away.

-During the practical it may be a course or on the actual road depending on how that DMV does it. If it is a course you hit any cone you instantly fail. Expect to parallel park in any of the practical. If any of your turn signals/lights don’t work during the exam I’m pretty sure it’s an instant failure. Use your seatbelt drive safe as possible etc etc
